RIP Gordie Howe: b. March 31, 1928 Floral, SK – d. June 10, 2016 (aged 88) Toledo, Ohio

Bob Davies Born 1937 in Verdun, Quebec, Canada. d. Stouffville ON Nov 29, 2011
Began playing publically in 1953 with The Down Yonder Boys and The Rhythm Jesters around Montreal. Played Toronto’s Brown Derby for four  years as The Bobsmiths.

A regular on The Hometown Jamboree (CFCF, Montreal, Que.).
Wrote the song in 1959, played it in Montreal nightclubs. Recorded it in 1960 for Trans-World Records but it was never released. He fixed it up with neighbour Moe Chapman & re-recorded it for Globe Records in 1963.

Davies recalls of first meeting Howe at the Red Wings’ Montreal hotel early in 1963. “I went up to his room with Moe, a 78 rpm demo, a fold-up record player and a neighbour to take a picture. Gordie was alone answering fan mail. He listened to it, shook my hand and said, ‘Well, if you like the idea, go ahead.’ ”

Montreal radio wouldn't touch the song at first, reluctant to incite Richard fans -- especially with Howe closing fast on the Rocket's NHL-record 544 goals. So Davies sent it up to CHUM radio in Toronto, where overnight deejay Bob Laine played it at 5 a.m. to huge audience reaction. It was aired again two hours later, flooding the station's switchboard, and became an instant hit. Montreal radio soon was playing the record into dust, and it soared on the charts in all six NHL cities. The record didn’t earn him a nickel when its label declared bankruptcy, management vanishing before a single royalty cheque was signed for what finally would be a sale thought to be 200,000 copies.

Davies played the Montreal Forum in October 1964, an opening act for the tour of the Dave Clark Five. He also wrote & recorded songs about Bobby Hull and Frank Mahovlich.

RIP Bobby Curtola b. April 17, 1943, Port Arthur ON (Thunder Bay) – d. June 4, 2016, Edmonton

In the fall of 1959, sixteen-year-old high school student Bobby Curtola went from pumping gas at his father’s garage in Thunder Bay, Ontario, to the life of a Teen Idol. Who would have known that within a year he would go from playing in his basement band “Bobby and the Bobcats” to recording his first hit single “Hand In Hand With You”. After performing on the Bob Hope Show in 1960, the charismatic Bobby, with his handsome boy next door looks was quickly finding himself within a whirlwind that we now refer to as “Curtolamania.”

The hit “Fortune Teller” was released in 1962 and went Gold in Canada. The now Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame DJ, Red Robinson, was instrumental in Fortune Teller’s success. Seeing its potential internationally, he sent it to Seattle’s KJR and Hawaii’s KPOI radio. A major US record deal was signed and Fortune Teller went on to become a 2.5 million seller internationally! Bobby was invited to tour with Dick Clark and his Cavalcade of Stars. While on tour in England that same year, Bobby met The Beatles and appeared on the famous British TV variety show “Thank Your Lucky Stars.”

In June of 1964, Bobby became the first pop singer to record a jingle that sounded like a “Top 40 Hit Single,” the song was “Things Go Better with Coke.” He signed an exclusive contract with Coca-Cola to be their #1 Spokesman. Bobby, also co-wrote “The Real Thing” which was used for the commercial “Coke’s The Real Thing.”

RIP: Tim Ryan, of popular Canadian band Jackson Hawke, died following complications after heart surgery, in Toronto, on June 2. He was 67. A CBS Canada act, Jackson Hawke was co-founded in 1974 by Ryan and Bob Yeomans. The two had originally begun working together as professional musicians in 1963 and had earlier been managed for a short time by Bernie Finkelstein. Ryan and Yeomans, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, had been in an early Canadian garage band, The Amen, with drummer Bucky Berger.

Jackson Hawke's first single, released in 1976, was a double-sided hit, featuring the original "You Can't Dance" and a version of Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic". "You Can't Dance" later became an international hit for England Dan and John Ford Coley. The band's 1977 single, "Set Me Free", peaked at number 54 in Canada, and went to number 11 on the CHUM Chart in Toronto.

Not too sure exactly which of these musicians played on this particular cut

With a personal distaste for the US Government policies on the Vietnam War he moved to Montreal, Quebec in 1967 as a draft dodger. In a little over a month Winchester found himself playing guitar in the band Les Astronauts before going solo as a regular at coffeehouses around Montreal.

During one such foray in Toronto, he was spotted by Robbie Robertson of The Band and was enticed into recording an album that Robertson would produce. His self-titled debut on Ampex Records featured guest performances by David Rea, Al Cherney, Ken Pearson, Bob Boucher, David Lewis, Gary Black, and fellow The Band member Garth Hudson.

After releasing 1972's 'Third Down, 110 To Go' Winchester began getting noticed for his songwriting with hits such as "Isn't That So". He became a Canadian citizen in 1973

1st song he wrote was The Brand New Tennessee Waltz, covered by Patti Page, Joan Baez, Everly Bros, Ralph Stanley, Lyle Lovett etc. Other songs covered by Jimmy Buffett, Emmylou Harris, Claire Lynch, The Judds, Anne Murray, Jennifer Warnes, Elvis Costello, Doug Kershaw, Flying Burrito Brothers, John Denver, Jerry Jeff Walker, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Brenda Lee, Lucinda Williams, Jonathan Edwards, Don Williams, Waylon Jennings, Tom Rush, etc etc etc.

1960s worked as a session player on several Donovan albums
Had once been described as "The best kept secret in the music business" by the late rock impresario Bill Graham. Today lives in Port Elizabeth, South Africa

“I'm not that interested in the fame, and popularity, but I would like to have the money that comes with it. I suppose the two have to go hand in hand. My "secrecy", is simply because none of the companies I have ever been affiliated with have cared enough to hire a national PR firm on an annual basis as part of the machine that creates the fame and popularity. Also, if you use a word like xenophobia in a song, or any word that the general public has to look up, they tend to shy away from any semblance of intelligence in popular music.”
