Son of a Portuguese mother and Arawak father, came to Canada in 1960. Later he studied music in the UK. David Campbell now lives in Vancouver, Canada, and has an active life as a singer, writer, television performer and painter. He has written several books of poetry. He has also written about philosophy. David has been an important ambassador and is a cultural hero for Guyana. For his inspirational work, he was awarded a Wordsworth McAndrew Award by the Guyana Folk Festival Committee in 2003.

Died from the effects of Alzheimer's. When he was 15, he and some local musicians were tapped to fill in at a Moorhead, Minn., concert after rock 'n' roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash. Early in Vee's career, a musician calling himself Elston Gunnn (sic) briefly toured with the band. This was Robert Allen Zimmerman, who later went on to fame as Bob Dylan.

Brand was born to a Jewish family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Played alongside such legends of folk music as Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White, The Weavers, and Pete Seeger.
Wrote the Canadian anthemic song ‘Something to Sing About’ aka This Land Of Ours.

He hosted the radio show Oscar Brand's Folksong Festival on WNYC-AM 820 in New York City for nearly 70 yrs. The show ran more or less continuously since its debut on December 10, 1945 making it the longest-running radio show with the same host, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Over its run it has introduced such talents to the world as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Huddie Ledbetter, Joni Mitchell, Peter, Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Kingston Trio,Pete Seeger, and The Weavers. In order to make sure that his radio program could not be censored he refused to be paid by WNYC for 65 years

In the early 1960s, Brand brought his substantial connections in the worldwide folk music community home to his native Canada with his CTV and then CBC television program Let's Sing Out. The program was staged at and broadcast from university campuses across Canada

Brand died of pneumonia age 96.

Also known as Hank Rivers, The Singing Soldier. Made his first record in 1933. "Maple Sugar Sweetheart" was Hank's top song which was also recorded by Mac Wiseman, Doc Williams, and Ramblin' Lou.  Ward Allen wrote the music and called it “Maple Sugar”, and Hank wrote the words and called it Maple Sugar Sweetheart.

These two songs also appeared again on the first SGB album entitled Tamarack or Music of Canada – one is not sure! SGB released this again in 1980 as a single after they changed their group name to Tamarack. James Gordon is currently a Guelph city councillor while Jeff Bird has performed with the Cowboy Junkies and various other configurations over the years. The Tamarack band held together from it’s SGB inception in 1978 until 2002 releasing 17 albums of Canadian songs.
