It was Mekler who suggested the name "Steppenwolf" to the band's members, having just read the Hermann Hesse novel. As the producer on Steppenwolf, the 1968 debut by that group, Mekler helped craft the sonic onslaught that would unleash the term "heavy metal" upon the world, a line from the brother of drummer, Jerry Edmonton, in the song, "Born to Be Wild".

A year after the Steppenwolf recordings, Mekler launched hits from Three Dog Night such as "One", "Try a Little Tenderness", "Eli's Coming", "Easy to Be Hard", and "Celebrate". Other studio credits include keyboard work with Cher, Donovan and David Clayton-Thomas. In an interview he gave to Guitar World magazine in 1993, Page discussed the song's construction:

"It was originally going to be an instrumental -- an overture that led into "The Rain Song". But I guess Robert had different ideas. You know, "This is pretty good, Better get some lyrics--quick!" [laughs]... I had all the beginning material together, and Robert suggested that we break down into half-time in the middle. After we figured out that we were going to break it down, the song came together in a day... I always had a cassette recorder around. That's how both "The Song Remains the Same" and "Stairway" came together -- from bits of taped ideas."

In 1976 the title was used for a concert film of the band shot at Madison Square Garden in New York.

He also appeared as a guest role on My Friend Flicka.

Sheb learned to ride at an early age and became a working cowboy and later an accomplished rodeo rider. At the age of 15, with a talent for music, he formed and played in a country-western band, the "Plainview Melody Boys," that periodically performed on radio at station KASA in Elk City, Oklahoma. Wooley didn’t get back into the music business until the 1950s during which time he had a string of country hits, with "That's My Pa" reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Hot C&W chart in March 1962.
