Tarpley signed a deal on July 30, 1956 to record for Decca Records when she was only 11. Her first record was Hank Williams’ Jambalaya. ‘I’m Sorry’ went to number 1 and became her signature song. Lee recorded the song early in 1960, but her label, Decca Records, held it from release for several months out of concern that a 15-year-old girl was not mature enough to sing about unrequited love.

She had 47 US chart hits during the 1960s, and is ranked fourth in that decade surpassed only by Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Ray Charles.

She’d been living with her jazz musician husband in Vancouver for most of her adult life. She made her first recording for Art Snider’s Chateau Records in 1962. As he did with Gordon Lightfoot, Snider had been taking Pat to Nashville to record her sessions, and it was there that legendary Nashville producer Chet Atkins discovered her. He helped her get a recording contract with RCA Victor. In 1964, Pat also won an award for Top Country Female Artist. She basically quit the music biz in 1968 when she moved to Vancouver but was pursuaded to return to do television programs.

The Beatles were as one of her opening acts on their first tour of Britain of early 1963,. During the course of the tour, the Beatles had their first hit single and John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song "Misery" for Shapiro to record but Shapiro never did. As the 60s wore on, new female pop stars were emerging: Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw and Lulu were stealing Shapiro’s thunder and she appeared old-fashioned and emblematic of the pre-Beatles, 50s era.

Hour Two

1.   The Dagenais Family: Whelan’s Breakdown (trad)
Debut Album: Icicle Records ICL 5017

Jenny Dagenais: fiddle
Robbie Dagenais: fiddle
Blain McEwen: bass
Brian Hebert: acoustic guitar, drums, piano

Teen Years

Robbie is one of the top fiddlers in Canada. He’s won the most coveted awards a fiddler could ever hope for, including the Canadian Open Championship at Shelbourne. Side one of the record (for the listener) features Robbie with his sisters, but side two (For The Stepdancers) features Robbie’s playing. Unfortunately, I can’t find out their ages so I guestimate that this album came our around ’85, that Robbie was probably about 16 and his sisters are probably in their teens as well.

2.   Minipops: Satisfaction (Jagger / Richards)
We're The Mini Pops: K-tel Records ?– NC-640
UK
Produced by Martin Wyatt, 1983

Minipops was a British TV show for kids, featuring kids dressed up as pop stars, but actually singing the songs. Controversy ensued because the kids were acting like older pop stars so it was cancelled after only a year. A performance from five-year-old Joanna Fisher, who covered the Sheena Easton song "9 to 5" in nightclothes singing "night time is the right time, we make love", sealed the show’s fate.

The album does not list who actually sings the songs, but it was picked up in Canada by K-Tel Records (out of Winnipeg) and became a top seller in 1983. This prompted the producers of Minipops to stage a three week Canadian tour that year.

Bailieboro ON
Ryan Weber: Bass
Alec Fraser: Bass Guitar

Vocals, Guitar, Banjo, Harmonica – Jimmy Bowskill
Vocals, Harmonica – Dave Mowat
Produced 2003

Age 12 yrs old

Jimmy Bowskill (born 16 September 1990)

This kid got so into the blues and he forced his parents to drive him from their home, near Peterborough, to downtown Toronto coz he wished to busk on the street in front of Jeff Healey’s bar. Healey came out to hear him and was so impressed, he invited Jimmy into the bar to perform on their matinee. This was the first of his albums and is quite impressive.

4.   Joey Tardif: Pa Pi Doo (Joey Tardif)
Across This Land With Stompin’ Tom Connors: Boot Records BOX 2-7137
(Original Soundtrack Recording)
Quebec
Joey Tardif: guitar, vocal
Bill Lewis: guitar
Gary Empey: bass
Unknown: drums
Produced by John Dunning and Andre Link 1973
Recorded by Russ Heise, George Semkiw and Hayward Parrot at the Horshoe Tavern, Toronto

Age 13 years old.

Joseph Tardif is not an easy name to track down in the Province of Quebec – it’s very common. I could find little to indicate that Joey is still performing, let alone what he’s done musically other than this appearance in Stompin’ Tom’s movie, Across This Land. In it, Joey performs a song that he wrote and it appears on the double album Original Soundtrack release. Stompin’ Tom actually introduces Joey, sits down in the audience and has a beer.

5.   Bobby Lalonde: Ripplin’ Water Jig (Don Messer)
Bobby Lalonde: London Records EBX 4179
Fournier ON
Bobby Lalonde: fiddle
Gerry Lalonde: drums
Gilles Lalonde: bass
Mac Lalonde: piano
Produced by London Records 1973

Age 13 yrs.

In Ottawa, Bobby Lalonde’s name is synonymous with fiddles, fiddle playing and fiddle music. Not only did he too get to perform in Across This Land and appear on the soundtrack, but he recorded and released his first LP that year, 1973, on London Records. I chose Don Messer’s patented piece, Ripplin’ Water Jig, which is very difficult to play properly, to test how proficient Bobby was at such a young age.

He’s also been a multi-instrumentalist session player in the Ottawa region, a country singer and a strong advocate for music in general in the National Capitol Region.

6.   Colin Linden: Hot Tamales (Robert Johnson)
The Best of Touch The Earth: CBC Records – LM 473
Toronto ON
Colin Linden: guitar, vocal
Chris Whiteley: guitar
Jim MacLean: guitar
Produced by Bill Garrett, 1975
Compilation Album produced by Paul Mills 1981

Age 15 yrs old

Colin Kendall Linden (born April 16, 1960)

This was the first real studio recording Colin made for a CBC radio appearance on Touch The Earth, a folk-oriented program hosted by Sylvia Tyson. He once told me that to practice for this he came down to CIUT’s original studios, at 91 St. George St., to test himself out. I guess he passed the audition!

Of course now he’s a top guitarist, producer, performer with Blackie And The Rodeo Kings.

In 1971, when she was 15, her song "It Takes Time" was recorded by Anne Murray and became a hit in Canada. Eikhard released her debut album the following year.

Her song, "Something to Talk About", was recorded by musician Bonnie Raitt. "Born with the Hunger" was recorded by Cher.

Compilation produced by Paul Burke 1975

Age 15 yrs old

Stephen Lawrence Winwood (born 12 May 1948)

It’s a legendary story: a young kid takes the world by the balls. While still a pupil at Great Barr School, Winwood was a part of the Birmingham rhythm and blues scene, playing the Hammond C-3 organ and guitar, backing blues singers such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Eddie Boyd, Otis Spann, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley on their United Kingdom tours

He formed the Spencer Davis Group with his Brother Muff and Spencer in 1963, when he was just 13. Two years they recorded Dimples, followed by their number one hit, Keep On Runnin’. By 1967 he was tiring of the Spencer Davis Group and did a one-off album (and tour) with Blind Faith, featuring Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker before forming Traffic with Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason, and Chris Wood.

The Junior Jug Band put out a second album in 1985 and is a four piece band featuring Ken and Chris with Chris’s kids, Jenny and Dan Whiteley. (On the first album, they only sing back up). Of course, Jenny

Originally got together in North York in Grade 8 as Danny Taylor and the Phantoms. They had this hit when most of the members of the group were only 14. Their established teen fan club requested "Cornflakes" so often that it shot to #1 in Toronto and soon followed suit in the rest of Canada. It was also number one in Boston, Georgia, and Australia where it had been released on Decca. After two more flop singles, the band, tired of being a teenybopper band, re-launched themselves as Nucleus (for one album) and eventually became A Foot In Cold Water.

A family band from Northwestern Ontario, played everything from waltzes to polkas to rock n’ roll. Mom and Pop and two brothers. It says on the album that drummer Gary Borden was only 12. While most of the album sounds a bit cheezy, this song really rocks! It’s true, unadulterated, 100% pure thrash rock.

Also included on this album, the Theme To Star Wars, a Ukrainian Kolomayka, Una Paloma Blanca, All Shook Up and Aloha Hawaii.

Townsend was putting a band together around drummer / songwriter Speedy Keene with old time musician Andy Newman. They needed a guitar player so why not the kid? Something in the Air was their big hit song but by 1972 the band was through. Paul McCartney then asked him to join Wings.
