1.   Druids of Stonehenge: Pale Dream (C. Hauser )
Creation: Uni Records 3004
NYC
Tom Paine: Bass
Steven Tindall: Drums, Organ, Piano
Billy (B. T.) Tracy: Guitar
Carl Hauser: Lead Guitar, Harpsichord, Vocals
David Budge: Lead Vocals
Produced by Jerry Goldstein, 1968
Engineer – Ami Hadani, Neil Cepos* (tracks: A2, A4)

Formed as The Druids in NYC in 1965. They played the club scene and had a good following. In 1967 they decided to make the pilgrimage to California where they got more into phsychadelic sounds. There, they signed to Uni Records (Universal) and recorded their only album, Creation, and changed their name to The Druids of Stonehenge. They broke up the following year.

2.   Love: Good Times (Arthur Lee)
Love Revisited: Elektra Records EKS-74058

Frank Fayad - bass
Drachen Theaker - drums
Produced by Arthur Lee, 1969
Compilation Produced by Jac Holzman, 1982

By mid-1968, Arthur Lee was the only remaining member of the Forever Changes line-up of Love. A good stoner party song.

Whatever! JA at their most psychedelic time.

4.   Seatrain: Bloodshot Eyes (Lloyd Baskin)

Marblehead, Mass
Bill Elliott: keys, accordion, harp
Andy Kulberg: bass, flute, vocal
Julio Coronado: drums
Peter Walsh: guitar, bass, vocal
Lloyd Baskin: keys, vocal

Recorded by Jay Messina at The Record Plant, NYC
Mixed by Doug Botnick at Sunset Sound, LA

Whatever happened to Blues Project, a New York fusion blues band lead by Al Kooper? By 1968 they were done but owed their label another album. Flutist/bassist Andy Kulberg and drummer Roy Blumenfeld of Blues Project formed the band with Jim Roberts, ex-Mystery Trend guitarist John Gregory, former Jim Kweskin Jug Band violinist/fiddler Richard Greene, and saxophonist Don Kretmar. Seatrain recorded their first album, Planned Obsolescence, in 1968, but had to release it as a Blues Project album for contractual reasons. They released the first Seatrain album in 1969. Seatrain recorded four albums and disbanded after releasing this one in 1973.

5.   The Fugs: Marijuana (Sanders / Kupferberg / Dorough) 1968
It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest Reprise 6305
New York City
Ed Sanders, vocal
Ken Weaver, vocal
Tuli Kupferberg, vocals
Produced by Ed Sanders 1968
Recorded by Richard Alderson at Impact Sound, NYC

This song is actually very beautiful. It’s the second song on side two, after Johnny Pissoff Meats the Red Angel. This album was The Fugs at their artistic best but I wouldn’t say it’s their best album. I bought it after seeing them at Massey Hall on October 26, 1968. (Opening act: McKenna Mendelson Mainline).

6.   The Paupers: It’s Your Mind (Skip Prokop / Adam Mitchell)
Magic People: Verve Forecast - FTS 3026
Toronto ON
Adam Mitchell, guitar, vocals
Skip Prokop, drums, vocals
Dennis Gerrard, bass
Chuck Beal, guitar
Produced by Rick Shorter - 1967     http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=U1ARTU0002743

The Paupers were, I think, the most psychedelic band in Toronto at the time. They got to open for Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Soft Machine at Toronto’s CNE Coliseum. They played Monterray Pop Festival but played poorly due to their bass player getting totally stoned and, thus, were not used in the movie.

7.   The British Modbeats: L.S.D. (Taylor / May) 1967 *

Chris Wilson: guitar, vocal
Mike Wilhelm: guitar
George Alexander: bass
David Wright: drums
Produced by Cyril Jordan and Roger Bechirian, 1979
Recorded by Roger Bechirian at Eden Studios, Advision Studios, London UK

This is definitely a drug song but wasn’t banned from airplay like The Byrds previous single, Eight Miles High (which wasn’t a drug song). But it did come close! I love the way The Flaming Groovies cover it.

10. The Stonemen: Faded Colors (Norbet Whyte)
Single: Maritime M45-1006
Moncton NB
Norbet Whyte
Bill McFadden
? LeBlanc
? LeBlanc
Produced by Bill McFadden - 1966

One of the rarest and most sought-after Canadian 45s. (I only have an efile). They consisted of 3 LeBlanc brothers (thus Whyte) from a well-known family of bricklayers, hence the name Stonemen. Some debate the release date, thinking 67 or 68.

John Hames: dulcitone
Robin Williamson: harp
Produced by Joe Boyd, 1970
Recorded by Jerry Boys at Sound Techniques, London, Nov-Dec 1969

Jennifer Vashti Bunyan b. 1945

Everything on this album sounds dream-like. It just floats across the water.

14. Alice Cooper: Mr. and Misdemeanor (Alice Cooper) 1970
Easy Action: Straight Records / Warner Bros WS 1845
Detroit MI
Alice Cooper – lead vocals
Glen Buxton – lead guitar
Michael Bruce – rhythm guitar, piano, backing vocals
Dennis Dunaway – bass guitar, backing vocals
Neal Smith – drums, backing vocals
Produced by David Briggs, 1970
Recorded at Sunwest Studios, Hollywood

Drummer Neal Smith later said of the record producer David Briggs, "David hated our music and us. I recall the term that he used, referring to our music, was 'Psychedelic Shit'. I think Easy Action sounded too dry, more like a TV or radio commercial and he did not help with song arrangement or positive input in any way." Mr. & Misdemeanor was later included in the well-received 1999 compilation album “The Life and Crimes of Alice Cooper.”

According to bass player, Glenn Miller, producer David Hassinger contributed to the polished sound: “Hassinger and his head engineer Richie Podler had a lot to do with the sound on that album. Hassinger used his trademark ‘tape delayed echo’ technique  on it.”

Lydia Purple was recorded at American Sound in North Hollywood. “Great little studio”, says Miller, “used to be an old cold storage meat packing plant. The walls were over a foot thick and filled with sawdust for insulation. The Greatful Dead recorded their first album there with Hassinger producing.”

The Dimensions got together in 1965 and were managed by Bernie Finkelstein, (future president of True North Records and Bruce Cockburn's longstanding manager). The band changed name to A Passing Fancy in January 1966 when Finkelstein left to take over the management of The Paupers. This was the B Side of their first single and only real major hit song I’m Losing Tonight. The following year their management – Wall-Don – decided to fire Jay Telfer which lead to the other members quitting. Wall-Don then put together a totally different band using the same name.

Bass player Rick Mann changed his name back to Richard Fruchtman and played bass with Whiskey Howl, a seminal Canadian blues band, from 1970 to 1972. He then freelanced and played with Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Paul Shaffer, Doug Henning, The Diamonds, Doug Kershaw, Dan Hill, Richard Newell (aka King Biscuit Boy), Tony Kosinec, String Band.

JAMES DEANS TELFER Died May 20, 2009, in his 61st year after a successful career as a solo artist.
