And Now for The Particulars:

Hour One

RIP DJ Fontana

Dominic Joseph Fontana (b. Shreveport, Louisiana, March 15, 1931 / d. June 13, 2018, Nashville)

Nicknamed "D.J.," Fontana was employed by the Louisiana Hayride to be an in-house drummer on its Saturday night radio broadcast. Fontana joined a band (originally assembled by Sam Phillips). The band included Scotty Moore (lead guitar), Bill Black (bass), and Elvis Presley (rhythm guitar). They called themselves The Blue Moon Boys. This became the band that would perform and record the vast majority of Presley's hits of the 1950s.

Wayne Fontana (Game of Love with The Mindbenders) took his stage name from D. J. Fontana.
Moore and Fontana also performed together without Presley, including a 2002 recording of "That's All Right (Mama), along with Paul McCartney.

1.   Elvis Presley: (You Aint Nothin But a) Houndog (Jerry Leiber / Mike Stoller)
Elvis Golden Hits: RCA Victor LPM-1707
Memphis TN
Elvis Presley: guitar, vocal
DJ Fontana: drums
Scotty Moore: lead guitar
Bill Black: bass
The Jordanaires: bg vocals
Produced by Steve Sholes, 1956
Recorded at RCA Studios, NYC, July 2, 1956
Compilation album produced 1958

Presley's first recording date at RCA was in NYC on July 2, 1956. When he entered the studio he had no idea that he would record 1 of his biggest hits: Dont Be Cruel. He came ready to do Hound Dog. Apparently, Elvis wasnt fond of the song used to play it at live shows but Steve Sholes decided it should be recorded coz it always brought crowds alive. After 31 takes, they got this one down and the band decided it was time to take a coffee break.

RIP Derrick ‘Rocky’ Wiseman

b. circa 1940 / d. June 8, 2018 St. John’s NL

He was also a radio host at VOBB, Rocky Harbour NL. First came to prominence with one of NL’s original rock bands, The Ravens. Was the original drummer for the Wonderful Grand Band. Backed up Joan Morrisey, Dick Nolan, Ron Hynes; Valdy, Big Mama Thornton, Frank Sinatra JR., and Bo Diddley. Grew up listening to VOUS (US Armed Forces radio station in Newfoundland). That’s where he got influenced to play. Little Richard turned his head. He totally wore out his records. He also loved listening to trad. NL music. Greatly influenced by military marches. Started playing drums around 1961 and joined The Ravens. His philosophy about learning: “You gotta listen (coz) if it doesn’t go in (to your head), it’s not going to come out.”

After a couple of months with The Ravens, he bought his Ludwig drums which he used for the rest of his life. After The Ravens broke up in the mid-60s, did a lot of TV work (because he was in the Union). To do this he had to learn different styles of drumming.

1978 was asked to join the WGB, doing Newfoundland music and pop on CBC-TV. After leaving the WGB got into jazz style with Island Jazz.

Jim Hennessey ordered his Fender bass guitar from Peet’s Music in Montreal. When Leo Fender heard about this, he wrote Hennessey a letter to go along with the guitar claiming that it was the first one Fender had sold in Newfoundland.

The Ravens didn’t name themselves after a bird. It was the combination of sirnames: Ryan and Evans, who formed the band in 1960. They went down to Toronto to record at Arc Sound and released Young Blood bw Sincerely in 1965 which hit Number One at CJON in Vancouver. But the band had no recording contract with Arc Records and they saw no royalties from their record which sold an estimated 20,000 copies across Canada.

Peter Reuben Aceves b. Brooklyn NY, March 16, 1942 / d. Nov 11, 2011, St. John’s NL

First came up to St. John’s to work at Memorial University’s department of folklore in 1974. He immediately befriended Ron Hynes who was playing one of Narvaez’s songs at a local pub, not knowing that Peter was in the house. His first band, in New York, was Pete and Jimmy with the Rhyrhm Knights. DJ Alan Freed was championing rock ‘no’ roll on WINS Radio in NYC, and he produced the band’s sole ’45, So Wild (Castle Records, 1959).

Narvaez started a jug band. Having earned a history degree from Drew University in New Jersey in 1963, he then went to the folklore department at Indiana State University in Bloomington and earned his MA (1967). One of his fellow students was Neil Rosenberg who would later move to St. John’s to work at Memorial University’s department of folklore.

In 1975, Narvaez gave a young musician named Kelly Russell a tape of Newfoundland fiddler Rufus Guinchard. Russell was with a then-fledgling Figgy Duff, and a folk music revival in that province then followed. (Narvaez played harmonica on the first Wonderful Grand Band album.)

RIP Danny Kirwin

Daniel David Kirwan (b. Brixton UK, 13 May 1950 / d. 8 June 2018, London)

Only 17 when he came to the attention of Fleetwood Mac, while he was playing in London with his first band Boilerhouse. He persuaded Mac's producer, Mike Vernon, to go and watch them rehearse. Vernon, impressed with Danny’s playing, got them to open for Mac and that’s when Peter Green came up with the idea of getting Kirwin into the band.

After two years, Green quit the band in 1970, foisting the songwriting and lead vocals onto Kirwin and Jeremy Spencer. Spencer couldn’t handle it and quit, mid-tour in the US. Kirwin appeared on three studio albums without Green before being fired by the band for drunken behaviour.

Kiln House began a brand new direction for Fleetwood Mac. Without Peter Green they began, they deviated away from the blues. Kirwin started writing rock songs with a good flavour of pop, something that would eventually transform them into the Mac that most people know, around 1975. Kiln House was also the last album to feature Jeremy Spencer. Christine Perfect McVie was, by now, a full fledged member of the band with Bob Welch on the guitar.
