Selina’s Disaster Fantasies – on vinyl – is a gorgeous album; hard and soft; loud and quiet, with great playing.

2.   The Spades: The Unknown (James McKenty)
45 single bw 49 Tons: Seventh Fire Records SFR003
Peterborough ON
James McKenty: guitar
Winchester Street: drums
Chachi Robichaud: bass
Produced by James McKenty - 2013
Recorded in the winter of 2013 at The Narrows Studio, Peterborough

Peterborough’s James McKenty, of The Spades, came up with the idea of starting a different kind of record company: Seventh Fire Records would only issue 45s. It was like a book of the month club; you joined, subscribed to receive a record every month. McKenty would get artists into the studio to produce two songs and watch them grow. This worked for a few years and have since, mondified their goals and have released a few albums.

3.   The Sadies: Starting All Over Again (The Sadies)
Internal Sounds: YepRoc Records YEP-2353
S. Ontario
Mike Belitsky: drums
Sean Dean: bass
Dallas Good: guitar, organ, vocal
Travis Good: guitars, fiddle, vocal
Produced by Dallas Good, 2013
Recorded by Guillermo Subauste
Mastered by Peter J Moore at The E Room, Toronto

I just wish that I had all the Sadies albums on vinyl! But this is a good start.

4.   Dave Tough: Feel Like I’m Falling Down (Dave Tough)
45 rpm single bw Fortune’s Wheel: Seventh Fire Records - SFR013-7
Peterborough ON
Dave Tough: guitar, vocal
Serena Ryder, bg vocals
Produced by James McKenty and Tom Street - 2013
http://davetough.bandcamp.com/

Previously a member of The Silver Hearts and The Weak Knees, a band that also included Serena Ryder. Another Seventh Fire 45.

5.   Stompin’ Tom Connors: Mule Skinner Blues (Jimmie Rodgers)
Live At The Horseshoe Tavern: Ole / Anthem Legacy OLE94
Saint John NB / Halton Hills ON
Tom Connors guitar, foot, vocals
Gerry Hall guitar
Ronald McDonald -  bass
Mickey Andrews - steel
Produced by Dr. Tom Connors – 1971
Recorded June 30, 1971, live at the Horshoe Tavern, Queen St, Toronto City, Canada
Remastered by Ole 2018

What a treat to hear these time-worn songs remastered on new vinyl! If anybody’s albums needed to be remastered it was Stompin’ Tom’s. We finally get to hear them for real. This is a 500 copy release by Ole. Also released: Tom’s 50th Anniversary album as well as Stompin’ Tom at the Hockey Game. Looking forward to the next batch.

6.   Chris Hillman: Such Is The World That We Live In (Chris Hillman / Steve Hill)
Bidin’ My Time: Rounder Records 1166100250
Los Angeles CA
Chris Hillman: mandolin, lead vocal
Herb Pederson: acoustic guitar, harmony vocal

Gabe Witcher: fiddle
Mark Fain: upright bass
Produced by Tom Petty, 2017
Recorded by Ryan Ulyate at The Clubhouse, LA; Shoeline Recorders, Malibou
Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering

This is a wonderful album from ex-Byrd, Burrito Brother, his first album in over a decade. It shows a mature musician in total control of his art. And combined with the ears and ideas of Tom Petty, just before he died, it feels totally up to date and yet dated. Just perfect.

7.   David Celia: The Grind (David Celia)
Double Mind: Seedling Music 088907212580
Toronto
David Celia: guitars, vocals
Clive Anderson: drums
Ed Pastorini: piano
Michelle Casillas: bg vocal
Burke Carroll: pedal steel
Produced by David Celia 2015
Recorded and Mastered by Andy Magoffin at The House of Miracles

I’ve been a David Celia fan since hearing his first CD. Every release since then has been a treat for my ears, music just the way that I like it. He’s just sent me promo material for his latest project, an album recorded with his wife, Marla. While it’s going to be released in August, the LPs won’t be ready until the fall. I’ll do a preview for it on the program in a few weeks. But for now, we’ll just settle for his 2015 vinyl release of Double Mind.

This Song Was Borne: Roaratorio  roar39

Allan Fraser: vocal, guitar

Mastered by Carl Saff

Daisy DeBolt (1945  October 4, 2011)
Allan Hugh Fraser (born 21 July 1948 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick)

This is a double album of previously unreleased material to go along with the two albums Fraser and DeBolt released in the early 1970s. Some of the recordings were most likely compiled from cassette tapes, maybe reel to reels, recorded in coffee houses and other concerts or studio demos. While the quality of the recordings are all listenable, I still have trouble with the mastering from track to track – it could have been better. Still, it’s better to hear this duo at the height of their career, something neither of them would accomplish in their solo careers.

15. kd lang: Fallen (Ron Sexsmith) 2016 *
Hymns of the 49th Parallel: Nonsuch Records 7559-79474-3
Consort AB
kd lang: vocal

Eumir Deodato: string conductor
Produced by Ben Mink and kd lang, 2016
Recorded and mixed by David Leonard at Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles
Mastered by Robert C Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios, Portland Maine

This is just a beautiful album of songs composed by Canadian songwriters from Neil Young to Jane Siberry; Bruce Cockburn, Joni, Leonard and Sexsmith. It’s sparse, it breathes, it lives! Just a joy to listen to.

Hour Two

1.   Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band: Just Can’t Wait (Minnie Hart / Bill Howard)
Tri-City Stomp: Duke of Erb Records WHRC 12-01
Kitchener ON
Minnie Heart: vocal, banjolin, violin, jug, kazoo, bass
Bill Howard: vocal, guitar, kazoo, washboard
Buck Thompson: bajitar, washboard, vocal
Willie Ames: cello, tenor guitar, vocal
John Smith: clarinet
Produced by Bill Howard & Minnie Heart 2012
Recorded at the Duke of Erb
Mixed by Matthew Knischewsky
Mastered by Harris Newman at Greymarket Mastering
http://www.everlovinjugband.ca

I met these people up at Summerfolk in Owen Sound and they quickly put this album into my hands. Unlike most jugbands, they don’t cherry pick the typical jugband songs; they write their own material in the spirit of the them. They understand the concept, sound and times of the original Memphis based jugbands of the 1920s and 30s. While I’ve never asked, I’m certain that singer Minnie Hart took her jugband name from two of her faves: Memphis Minnie and Hattie Hart, both of whom were backed on disc by Will Shade’s Memphis Jug Band.

2.   Ry Cooder: Everybody Ought To Treat A Stranger Right (Ry Cooder)
The Prodical Son: Fantasy Records / Perro Verte FAN00336
Palo Alto CA
Ry Cooder: guitars, bass, banjo, mandolin, keys, vocals
Joachim Cooder: drums, percussion
Terry Evans, Arnold McCuller, Bobby King: bg vocals
Produced by Ry Cooder and Joachim Cooder, 2018
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Martin Pradler at Sage & Sound Studios, Hollywood and Wireland Studios, Chatsworth CA
Recording assistant: Jon Gray

Ryland Peter Cooder: b. March 15, 1947, Los Angeles

At 71, the man who refused to be a Rolling Stone still has the fire and breathes it out of his guitar. This is a very spiritual album. It was released in conjunction with a recent tour which took him to Massey Hall in June. The ultimate, consumate professional, doing what he does best.

3.   Dennis Ellsworth & The Haunted Hearts: Continental Blues (Gene MacLellan)
Snowbird: The Songs of Gene MacLellan: True North Records TND 676
Charlottetown, PEI
Dennis Ellsworth: guitar, vocal

Johnny Ross: keys
Produced by Karl Falkenham 2017
Recorded at Zion Piresbyterian Church, Charlottetown PEI 2013
Recorded by Pat Martin, Rod Sneddon and Kenny MacDopnald
House Sound: House Front Productions

This was recorded back in 2013 but only released in 2017 and features various artists covering Gene MacLellan’s songs, including Lenny Gallant, John Connoly, Dennis Ellsworth and Ron Hynes doing versions of Gene’s songs. Catherine has been doing summer-long shows of Gene MacLellan, her father’s life in stories and songs.

4.   Bruce Cockburn: Stab At Matter (Bruce Cockburn)
Bone On Bone: True North Records TND678V
Ottawa ON
Bruce Cockburn: guitar, vocal
John Dymond: bass
Gary Craig: drums, percussion
Colin Linden: slide guitar
John Aaron Cockburn: accordion
Ruby Amanfu and The San Francisco Lighthouse Chorus: bg vocals
Produced by Colin Linden, 2017
Recorded by Matthew Wright with Jaycob Bellochi
Mixed by Colin Linden at Pinhead Recorders, Nashville TN
Recorded by Matthew Wright, Jaycob Bellochio, Ben Bacey & Nate Neusada at Fantasy Studio, Berkeley CA
Mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, NYC

Although this album was released last year, I was only recently sent the vinyl and: wow! Great to have Colin Linden back producing. Using the Rodeo King’s rhythm section, the album showcases a them similar to Ry Cooder’s Prodigal Son: a spiritual exposure of where they’re at today.

5.   Hands And Teeth: Sunset Park (Hands And Teeth)
Before The Light EP: Underground Operations - UOP J-44
Toronto ON
Kevin Black: guitar, vocals, autoharp
Adam Kolubinski: drums
Derek Monson: bass, vocals, electronic drums
Natasha Pasternak: vocals, guitar, synths
Produced by Hands And Teeth with Carlin Nicholson & Mike O'Brien - 2014
Recorded by Carlin Nicholson & Mike O'Brien at Ill Eagle Studio, Toronto
Mixed by Carlin Nicholson at the Cracker Pit
Mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel, Toronto
http://www.handsandteeth.com

Toronto band that I featured on my program June 9, 2014 when they released their vinyl EP. They broke up shortly afterwards. Natasha Pasternak is the daughter of singer / songwriter / music producer Suzanne Pasternak and grew up in Prince Edward County, Ontario.

6.   The 49th Parallel: Up To No Good (D Bramlett / M Davis / D Hockett)
49th Parallel - Singles: Lion LP-144
Calgary AB
Dennis Abbott (vocal)
Dan Lowe (guitar)
Bob Carlson (guitar)
Dave Petch (organ)
Mick Woodhouse (bass)
Terry Bare (drums)
Produced 1969
Compilation LP Produced 2014

Here’s the perfect example of the good and bad aspects of releasing music on vinyl. All of these songs were recorded in the late 1960s, taken from 45s. It’s a bit uneven, as can be expected, but I really think that they could have put a bit more grit into the grooves. There are a lot of new vinyl albums like this, that should have sounded a lot better. It doesn’t really matter if it’s 180 gram vinyl or 120 grams: if they’re not mastered right, it’s noticeable. Still, it’s great to have these recordings by this Calgary based band but their real singles still sound better.

7. Bad Tractor: Brand New Song (Andrew Neville)
Blessington: Meyer’s Creek Records MLRLP 0517
Belleville ON
Tim Hadley: guitar, vocal
Ian McKendry: electric guitar
Mike Budding: bass, bg vocal
Steve Fruitman: drums, bg vocal
Janet Mercier: bg vocal
Produced by Nicolas Tjelios, 2018
Recorded at Big Red Button Studio, Belleville ON by Nicolas Tjelios, May 2017
Mastered for vinyl by Phillip Shaw Bova at Bova Lab Studios, Ottawa
http://www.facebook.com/badtractor or @badtractorband

The first time I was committed to vinyl was blowing the jug on The Doot Song by Stompin’ Tom on his 2008 release, The Ballad of Stompin’ Tom. But it’s hardly noticeable! Being in a band, recording and releasing a real vinyl album that was well mastered, is so rewarding. After months of hearing digital mixes, to actually put the stylus down on a record and hear the results was just mind-blowing. I thought we sounded really good but the vinyl sounded fantastic!

8.   The Clash: Hateful (Joe Strummer / Mick Jones)
London Calling: Columbia Records – 88875112701
London UK
Mick Jones: guitars, vocals
Joe Strummer: vocal, Rhythm guitar
Paul Simonon: bass, vocal
Topper Headon: drums
Produced by Guy Stevens and Mick Jones 1979
Recorded at Wessex Sound Studios by Bill Price and Jerry Green
Mastered by Tim Young and The Clash at Metropolis
Rereleased by Sony Music, 2013

From the third Clash album. "The Guns of Brixton" was the first of Paul Simonon's compositions the band recorded, and the first to have him sing lead. Simonon was originally doubtful about its lyrics, which discuss an individual's paranoid outlook on life, but was encouraged by Strummer to continue working on it. London Calling has been considered by many critics to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time

9.   Simply Saucer: Baby Nova (Edgar Breau)

Eddie Paton: guitar

Edited for Vinyl by John “Beetle” Bailey at The Drive Shed Recording Studios, Toronto
Mastered by Peter Letros at Wreckhouse Mastering and Paul Gold at Salt Mastering
http://www.sultansofstring.com

Violinist Chris McKhool was putting out some pretty interesting solo albums in the early 2000s when he met up with flamenco jazz guitarist Kevin Laliberté and that’s when everything began to click. Fusing their wild sounds with world music, they formed the basis of the Sultans of String. Since then they’ve released several well received albums that have generated a lot of interest. What a treat to finally hear them on vinyl!! It’s a totally different experience. Ten Years of Music is a compilation album of earlier works but it sure works to my liking.
