McGuinness Flint formed in 1970 by Tom McGuinness, former Manfred Mann bassist and guitarist, and Hughie Flint, former drummer with John Mayall; The other members were vocalist / keyboard player Dennis Coulson, and singer-songwriters Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle who first started playing together in 1959. (They were signed by The Beatles to write for Apple Records' artists. Went on to have a major songwriting and performing career.) The band lasted until 1975.

Fresh out of high school back in the late-1970s, Lloyd Cheechoo was in Moose Factory playing drums and a bit of guitar in a band with his cousins. One day a fiddle player named Clarence Louttit asked Lloyd a favour: someone from the Oji-Cree Cultural Centre was recording local artists for a compilation, and Louttit wanted to know if Cheechoo could add some guitar to his tracks. Once that was done, the recorder said, “Hey Lloyd, do you have any songs?” So it happened that Cheechoo contributed two songs to a compilation called Goose Wings.  Others on this compilation album include Lawrence Martin, Vern Cheechoo and Roger House.

Dick Flood (a.k.a. Okefenokee Joe) (born November 13, 1932 Philadelphia, PA)

An American singer, songwriter, he was part of the duo The Country Lads and made regular appearances on CBS’ The Jimmy Dean Show. In 1959 Flood's cover version of “The Three Bells (The Jimmy Brown Story)” which reached number 23 on the US charts. His songs have been recorded by popular artists including Roy Orbison and The Wilburn Brothers. In 1962, The Wilburns recorded his song “Trouble’s Back in Town” which peaked at number 4 on the US Country Charts and was named Cashbox Magazine’s “Country Song of the Year.” In 1973 Flood moved to Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp and became a professional environmentalist. In 1981 Flood officially changed his name to Okefenokee Joe.

Just out of High School in Oshawa and having turned professional, the trio approached the Fern Resort for a gig and ended up taking Fernwood as their name. In the fall of 1962 the toured Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC.

The Fernwoods put out two LPs in 1963 before their careers petered out. They did get to perform on CBC television’s Music Hop program which aired on October 17, 1963 along with Bobby Curtola and Pierre Lalonde. On this LP, Zeke Shepherd (later of Mainline) was asked to play some electric bass and harmonica on one song.

Probably recorded in the late 70s, the liner notes claim that King, who hadn’t recorded in several years, decided to make a Bluegrass record because it was something that he always wanted to do. He had a great career in the Ottawa area, having front The Happy Wanderers with fiddler Ward Allen. He recorded 17 LPs (and around 50 45 singles) before managing his wife’s career (Marie King) which was blossoming in Quebec. Bob claims: “(Bluegrass) It’s Country Music in its purest form.” Bob King was inducted into the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1984

Kirkland won a scholarship to study music at York University when he was just 15. He also received three full scholarships to The Banff Centre School of Fine Arts. Along with being a respected studio drummer, Kirkland was well known for his street busking performances, using overturned buckets and other available surfaces. After his musical career, he became a financial advisor.

The group got together in 1960, one of the first French bands to play rock n’ roll (along with Les Chats sauvages). They recorded Be Bop A Lula in that same year and followed it up with several successful singles before the 1962 with the departure of Mitchell for his military service. The group stopped recording in late 1964.

The youngest of ten children born to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, Lester and two of his brothers went on to be jazz band leaders. He made his name during the depression by playing at exclusive parties thrown by the rich and powerful. He was hired worldwide to play for dignitaries and monarchs, in addition to a recurring invitation to play at White House inaugural balls from the Eisenhower administration to the Carter administration. According to Lanin, one of his most memorable performances was playing at a party for avant-garde rock musician Frank Zappa. This was reported by Billboard magazine in 1974

Jazz libre worked in Montreal bars, Quebec colleges and universities, and backed up a young, Robert Charlebois. They toured in France with Charlebois and Louise Forestier in 1969, and appeared on their 'Lindberg' album.

In 2015, the Polaris Music Prize committee shortlisted Lindberg as one of the nominees for the 1960s -1970s component of its inaugural Heritage Award to honour classic Canadian albums

This is a song that was written by the late Rick Fielding who hosted CIUT’s Acoustic Workshop radio show from 1989 until the day that he died in 2004. Arlene recorded two albums and they couldn’t be produced more differently. Her first album, from 1986 was over-produced and didn’t represent the artist whereas In Solidarity is the real Mantle.

Claire Lawrence (born 1939)

Claire began performing in Vancouver band The Collectors. After they changed their name and image (to Chilliwack), Lawrence left after recording their first album and got into music production in a big way. In the 1970s he produced The Great Canadian Gold Rush for CBC Radio, hosted by Terry David Mulligan. From 1986 to 1990, he scored the music for the long-running CBC series, The Beachcombers. He’s also produced many other Canadian artists.
