Squeeze’s main years were between 1974–82; since then they’ve done several get-togethers and continue to this day. In the United States and Canada, the band and album were dubbed UK Squeeze owing to legal conflicts arising from a contemporary American band called "Tight Squeeze".Cool for Cats (1979), contained the band's two highest charting UK singles in "Cool For Cats" and "Up The Junction", both of which peaked at No. 2.

5.   Nat King Cole: Straighten Up And Fly Right (Irving Mills / Nat King Cole)
The Nat King Cole Story Vol 1: Capitol Records SW 1926
Montgomery Alabama
Nat King Cole: vocals, piano
Oscar Moore: guitar
Charlie Harris: bass
Produced by Lee Gillette, 1961
Originally Recorded November 30, 1943

This was the first side recorded on the first day Nat ever worked at Capitol Records; it was also his first national hit song! While signed with Capitol, Cole made several recordings under several pseudonyms: Shorty Nadine, Eddie Laguna, Nature Boy, The King, Aye Guy and Lord Calvert. As long as he didn’t sing, Capitol didn’t mind him playing on other records.

6.   Sam & Dave: You Got Me Hummin (I Hayes /D Porter)
Sweet & Funky Gold: Gusto Records GT 0045
New York City
Samuel David Moore: vocal
Dave Prater: vocal
Uncredited others
Produced - 1966
Compilation LP produced by Louis Lofredo 1978

Samuel David Moore (born Samuel David Hicks on October 12, 1935), and the baritone/tenor (lower) voice was Dave Prater (May 9, 1937 April 9, 1988).

The Dynamite Duo of Sam and Dave were a powerhouse soul duo. They’re hits included included "Soul Man," "Hold On, I'm Comin'," "You Don't Know Like I Know," "I Thank You," "When Something is Wrong with My Baby," "Wrap It Up". Except for Aretha Franklin, no soul act during Sam & Dave's Stax Records years (1965–1968) had more consistent R&B chart success, including 10 consecutive top 20 singles and 3 consecutive top 10 LPs. They are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and are Grammy Award and multiple gold record award-winning artists.

7.   The Toys: Lovers Concerto (Sandy Linzer / Denny Randall)
45 single bw This Night: Reo Records 8876X
Jamaica NY
Barbara Harris: sang lead most of the time.
Barbara Parritt
June Montiero
Produced by Linzer and Randell, 1965

A huge hit for this all girl band who started off singing in church choirs. This song hit No. 1 on the Cashbox chart in the US, making it almost impossible for them to score another major hit of that magnitude. The melody of the song comes from Minuet in G Major by Petzold, which was first popularized by bandleader Freddy Martin in the 1940s. His recording was released under the title “A Lover’s Concerto”.

8.   The Searchers: Bumble Bee (Fullylook / Baker)
45 Single bw A Tear Fell: Pye Records 772
Liverpool UK
Mike Pender: lead guitar
John McNally: rhythm guitar

Produced 1965

Originally recorded by LaVern Baker in 1960. Billy Fury recorded it in 1963.

9.   The Yardbirds: Puzzles (Relf / Dreja / McCarty / Page)

London UK
Keith Relf – vocals, harmonica, acoustic guitar, percussion
Jimmy Page – lead guitar
Chris Dreja – bass
Jim McCarty – drums, backing vocals
Produced by Mickie Most – 1967

Little Games was probably one of the lest popular Yardbirds single. The B side, Puzzles, is a much better song but got buried in their cannon, having been not included in the Little Games LP. So it’s a very rare Yardbirds cut which features some stellar guitar playing by Jimmy Page.

Victor Hayden (1947/1948 – December 7, 2018)

Played (or tried to play) bass clarinet. He was Captain Beefheart’s cousin and started jamming with the group and was eventually coaxed into recording Trout Mask Replica album with the band. He was a painter by profession. Hayden produced the painting that was used as cover art for the 1974 Beefheart album Bluejeans & Moonbeams. He died on December 7, 2018 from complications after being struck by a van.

On this track (sung by Antennae Jimmy Semens), there is diologue between The Snake and The Captain that doesn’t seem to work. Frank Zappa was at the controls and you can hear him getting them to do different takes.

Roger Daltry: vocals
John Entwistle: bass, french horn
Keith Moon: drums
Produced by Kit Lambert 1966
Recorded at IBC Studios in London, UK 31 July - 1 August 1966;

The song was originally intended to be a part of a rock opera called 'Quads' which was to be set in the future where parents can choose the sex of their children. The idea was later scrapped, but this song survived and was later released as a single. The song is about a family who "order" four girls, but a mistake is made and three girls and one boy are delivered instead.

At 71, the man who refused to be a Rolling Stone still has the fire and breathes it out of his guitar. This is a very spiritual album. It was released in conjunction with a recent tour which took him to Massey Hall in June. The ultimate, consumate professional, doing what he does best.

This set of songs, featuring psychedelic sound effects, namely the Fuzz-Tone. The Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone was the first fuzz distortion device to become widely available on the market for electric guitars and basses. The device was used by Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones 1965 hit "Satisfaction" and became a favorite of many garage rock and psychedelic acts of the time. The Count Five’s “Psychotic Reaction”, originally recorded in 1965, was a great example of it.

Austin TX
Roky Erickson: guitar, vocal
Tommy Hall: electric jug, vocal
Stacy Sutherland: guitar, vocal
Danny Thomas  drums, vocals
Benny Thurman  bass, vocals
Produced by Lelan Rogers - 1966

One of the very first groups to be called phsychedelic. A special aspect of The Elevators' sound came from Tommy Hall's innovative electric jug. The jug, a crock-jug with a microphone held up to it while it was being blown, sounded somewhat like a cross between a minimoog and cuica drum (the tone it produces has a high-pitched squeaky timbre. It has been called a 'laughing gourd' due to this sound).  In contrast to traditional musical jug technique, Hall did not blow into the jug to produce a tuba-like sound. Instead, he vocalized musical runs into the mouth of the jug, using the jug to create echo and distortion of his voice.

15. The Deserters: Alien (C Gibb / K MacLean) *
45 single: Capitol Records 72856
Ajax ON
Chris Gibb (synthesizer, bass, vocals)
Kenny MacLean (synthesizer, guitar, vocals)

Greg Stephens (synthesizer, vocals)
Produced by Carter, 1981
Recorded at Capitol Records Studios, Hollywood CA

Originally known as The Suspects, they released a single in 1978 and were signed to Capitol Records the following year. They changed their name and had a looks make over as well. Gone was the angst and moderate rebellion, replaced by extra hairspray and clean leather outfits. There were two different versions of Alien released and two b-sides, "Innervisions" and "Protection." "Innervisions" was later released as a single on its own in the UK. The band were trying to straddle the line between Punk and New Wave but broke up in ’83. Only guitarist Kenny MacLean gained any notoriety afterwards, joining another Toronto band, Platinum Blonde.
