Roy Morris: guitar
Keith Ellis: bass
Tony O’Reilly: drums
Produced by David Paramor
Recorded by George Emerick at Abby Road Studios, London 1968
Released January 1969

A Liverpool band who were at the forefront of the Mercy Beat along with contemporaries The Beatles, Searchers, Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer etc. After doing a stint in Hamburg, the band returned to the UK in 1964 and were signed to a management contract with Brian Epstein. They were supposed to appear in the 1965 Gerry & The Pacemakers film “Ferry Cross the Mersey” as the losers in a battle of the bands contest, but the footage was cut from the film's final release. They kept at it although success seemed to elude them. By 1967 they were openers for Jimi Hendrix and The Who on European tours. After that they changed from R&B to a psychedelic sound but still found little to jump for joy for. They broke up in 1968, shortly before the release of their only album. Drummer Tony O’Reilly then went to play with Yes for a short time, replacing Bill Bruford.

4.   Bluegrass Mountaineers: Bamboozled (Willma Lee Cooper / Carl Stutz)
Saturday Nite Jamboree: CBC Archives No serial
St Johns NL
Reg Whitten: banjo, vocal
Frank Thorne: guitar, vocal
Produced by Neil Rosenberg 2007
Recorded live on CBC Radio 1963
Mastered by Spencer Crew

Reg Whitten b. St John’s NL 1925 / d. 2001
Frank Thorne b. St. John’s NL 1927 / d. 2000

These two guys started playing music together in 1946 and are some of the first Newfoundlanders to play and record bluegrass music. For many years, Reg Whitten was said to be the only five string banjo players on the Island. It’s thought that they used the Mountaineers name as a tribute to the first recognized bluegrass band from Newfoundland who played in the 1930s. The song was also recorded by Stoney Cooper and Wilma Lee (who wrote it).

5.   Chuck McCabe: That Old Pet Rock of Mine (G Dahl / C McCabe)
45 single bw Live At The Pet Rock Show: GRT Records GRT-044
San Jose, CA
Chuck McCabe: acoustic guitar, vocals
Produced by Fred Vail, Dick Shipley and Dick Heard, 1976

Chuck McCabe b. Aug 24, 1944 / d. July 23, 2010 Santa Clara CA

He started off as a folk singer and eventually became a powerful songwriter. He liked to write about the downtrodden and that won him the Woody Guthrie Songwriting Competition in 2002. This song is from a vein of comic relief songs that he was also well known for. It was written during the ridiculous marketing campaign for pet rocks in the mid-1970s.

6.   Lydia Mendoza: Aunque Venga Muy Borracho (Though I’m Very Drunk) (Lydia Mendoza)
La Gloria de Texas: Arhoolie Records 3012

She learned to sing and play stringed instruments from her mother and grandmother. In 1928, as part of the family group, Cuarteto Carta Blanca, she made her first recordings for the Okeh Records label in San Antonio, Texas. She was first real star of Tejano and Norteno 'Tex/Mex' music.

One of the first punk bands in Canada, they formed around 1975. They laid down a bunch of tracks, including The Screaming Fist (their first single) in 1977, most of it unreleased until the compilation album 'A Taste of Honey' was released in 1994. They did record and release one album during their years of operation: 1983s Saturday Night / Sunday Morning, which was recorded live at Larry’s Hideaway in Toronto.

Jason Hoover: vocal
Brian Kidd: bass
Dave McPhail: drums
Produced by Studio 3 Productions, 1967
Re-Released in 1970

Formed in 1965 as Jason Hoover And The Epics, this Vancouver band is not to be confused with the San Francisco band of the 1980s with the same name. The Epics soon changed their name to The Trials of Jayson Hoover, put out two singles that barely scraped the Top 100 before becoming The Anvil Chorus and breaking up in 1969. Rhythm Is The Way was actually recorded by The Trials of Jayson Hoover in 1967 but was resurrected by a Dutch label called Pink Elephant and credited the song to The Anvil Chorus.

Johnny Torales: vocal, guitar
Produced circa 1964
Recorded at Columbia Records Studios, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Formed initially in 1959 by Alma Maria Vaesken, Casto Darío Martínez and Johnny Torales. They were offered a recording contract by Columbia Records in Argentina, and since that meant that they would have to travel, Alma Maria and Johnny Torales had to marry since she was under-age. Eventually, in 1965, the band moved to Spain where they were extremely popular for many years.

13. The Crew Cuts: A Story Untold (Leroy Griffin)
45 single: Mercury Records 70634
Toronto ON
Rudy Maugeri
John Perkins
Ray Perkins
Pat Barrett
David Carroll Orchestra
Produced 1955
Released May, 1955

The Crew Cuts were a Toronto based doo-wop group who first got together at high school as members of the St. Michael's Boys Choir. They got active singing as a vocal quartet at the same time as another up-and-coming Toronto group, The Four Lads. In fact both bands originally shared some members. Toronto deejay Barry Nesbitt heard them sing and invited them to perform on his weekly 'teen' radio show.  In 1952 they drove to New York City and got to appear on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Show and came in second. But it wasn’t until a cold night in sub-zero Sudbury, Ontario that they got the fateful word: they were to appear on a Cleveland based TV Show. After driving 600 miles in the cold (without a heater in their car) they did the show and got a recording contract from Mercury Records. The rest, they say, is history.

The song was written in the EMI Studio by John and Paul and was recorded later that evening. Since George Martin was not present, recording engineer Chris Thomas actually produced the session. The last time any Beatles performed this song was at Ringo’s 70th Birthday in 2010, with Paul.

Donovan Philips Leitch b. 10 May 1946, Glasgow, Scotland

An Epistle is a letter so here’s two Epistles for you to chew on.

Epistle To Dippy was an open letter from Donovan to an old friend from school. Dippy was in the army in Malaysia by then, and when he heard the song, he contacted Donovan and asked him for help. As a result, Donovan bought Dippy's way out of armed service.

3.   Plastic Cloud: Epistle to Paradise (Don Brewer)
The Plastic Cloud: Allied Records 10
Bay Ridge ON
Don Brewer (guitar, vocals)
Brian Madill (bass)
Michael Cadieux (guitar)
Randy Umphrey (drums)
Produced by Bill Bessy and Jack Boswell, 1969

Apparently, only 500 copies of their album were released. Bay Ridge is a part of Pickering, Ontario, located near the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Bill Bessy worked with executive producer Jack Boswell with Allied and Marathon Records, mostly producing country music. This is one of their few forays into pop rock. An Epistle to Paradise!

4.   June Eikhard: Sputnik Breakdown (June Eikhard)
Canada's First Lady of the Fiddle: Rodeo Records - RLP 78
Moncton, NB
June Eikhard, fiddle
Jackie Doyle, piano
Cecil Eikhard, bass
Al Cogan, electric Guitar
Producer by George I Taylor, 1960

Launched October 4, 1957, the planet’s first artificial satellite survived the rigors of outer space for 21 days before its batteries died. It fell out of orbit a couple of months later but it sure did it’s job! It scared the life out of the Americans but not of New Brunswick’s June Eikhard who composed the tune shortly thereafter and recorded it on her first album for Rodeo Records. It’s been subsequently recorded by numerous fiddlers ever since. BTW: June is the mother of Toronto based Juno Award winning songwriter, Shirley Eikhard (her father, Cecil, was June’s bass player too).

5.   The Fentons: Shadow Play (Rory Gallagher)
Whatever It Takes: Strange Music FB002
Ottawa ON
Paul Fenton: slide guitar, acoustic guitars
Michael Fenton: lead vocal, bass
Ron Gilfillan: lead guitar
Doug Inglis: drums
Produced by The Fentons and Tony McLean, 1987

The original Fentons band formed in Ottawa in 1984 and disbanded in 1990. About Paul Fenton’s slide guitar playing: “Man, this guy is a red hot slide player!” claimed Johnny Winter. Some of Paul’s favourite slide players are (in no particular order): Tampa Red, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Rory Gallagher , Duane Allman , Johnny Winter, Elmore James, Brian Jones and David Gilmour. He formed a punk band called The Action in Ottawa which were notorious for being extremely loud. He also played in the Blushing Brides for a while before forming the Fentons.

The Fentons went down to the US to record another album with producer Mick Ronson and engineered by Todd Rungren but their recording company, Torrid Records, went bankrupt and the master tape went missing, thus it was never released.

6.   Nick Lowe: Stick It Where The Sun Don’t Shine (Nick Lowe)

He began his musical career in 1967 when he joined the band Kippington Lodge, along with his school friend Brinsley Schwarz. They renamed the band Brinsley Schwarz in late 1969 and folded in 1975. In 1975 Lowe began playing bass in Rockpile with Dave Edmunds which lasted until 1980. He decided to start his solo career after that. Lowe was also a member of the short-lived mainly studio project called Little Village, with John Hiatt, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner who played Toronto's Massey Hall .

7.   David Bradstreet: Torpedoes in the Mainstream (David Bradstreet)
Black & White: Street Records SR001
Toronto ON
David Bradstreet, guitars
Carl Keesee, bass
Bill Dillon, guitars
Bucky Berger, drums
Produced by David Bradstreet and Carl Keesee 1980
Mastered by George Graves at Lacquer Channel, Toronto

David Bradstreet b. London UK 194?

Bradstreet was gifted with a big voice, like Jim Morrison: very distinct and resonant. Although born in the UK, he was raised in Oakville, Ontario where he began his music career in the 1960s. When up and rising singer Valdy covered his song “Renaissance” in 1974, Bradstreet watched as the song hit the top of the charts. He’s worked as a musician, producer, songwriter, recording jingles, film soundtracks. In short, he knows how to survive in the music biz. He released 3 vinyl albums between 1976 and 1980. Long time associate, Carl Keesee, has been playing bass for Bradstreet ever since.

8.   Domenico Modugno: Volare (Franco Migliacci / Domenico Modugno)
45 rpm EP: Decca ?– ED 2633
Lampedusa, Sicily
Domenico Modugno: guitar, vocal
Produced 1958

Domenico Modugno: b. 9 January 1928 Polignano a Mare, Apulia, Italy - d. 6 August 1994 (aged 66) Lampedusa, Sicily

Domenico Modugno was a struggling Italian singer when he hit a shooting star. The turning point of his career came in 1958 when he participated in Italy's Sanremo Music Festival, presenting the song "Nel blu dipinto di blu." The song won the contest and became an enormous success worldwide. It received two Grammy Awards with sales above 22 million copies. Modugno represented Italy in the 1958 Eurovision Song Contest, where it came in third. It was his only massive hit song. He died at the age of 66, from a heart attack

9.   Connivence: Le Boyau En Liberté (The Gut Feeling) (Steve Burman)
Connivence: Kébec Disc KD 938
Gatineau (Hull), QC
Steve Burman: piano, vibraslap
Suzanne Sabourin: violin
Rameau: drums
Produced by Quintin Meek 1977
Recorded by Marc at Listen Audio, Montreal
Mixed at Studio Six, Montreal

More of a musicians' collective than a band, Connivence released 3 lps under this name, all with different groupings of musings who’s shared with costs and played on each others songs. This song features only three of the dozen or so musicians featured on the album.

10. Les Dabsters: J’en ai assez (I’ve Had Enough) (Normand Beaudet)
45 single bw Tu le sais bien: Passe-Temps PST-906
Verdun QC
Normand Beaudet (singer)
Denis Beaudet (lead guitar)
Michel Roy (guitar)
John Smith (bass guitar)
Normand Cody (drums)
Produced 1966

Popular in Montreal’s Verdun suburb between 1965-68, Les Dabsters recorded only two 45’s. They were only teens at the time. Singer Normand Beaudet, who was born April 24, 1950, died when he was 18. For a name they looked up words in the English dictionary and came up with dabster, which means a clever person. Because of their young age (the oldest was 18; the youngest 15) they played mostly in youth clubs around Montreal. After Normand’s death, the band continued for a few months before calling it a day.

11. Danny Roman & The Rock-A-Tones: Bad Girl (Irma Garza / Rumero)
45 single bw Let’s Get Out: Taz Records T1005
Milwaukee WI
Danny Roman: lead vocals
Larry Lynn: drums
Others not known to me
Produced 1959

One of the few releases on the little Taz Records label. It has nothing to do with Taz Records of Halifax / Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The Rock-A-Tones seemed to back up various singers but I haven’t found any useful information about the band. They also backed Bad Girl's songwriter, Irma Garza, who released a 45 on the Mayte label out of Linn, Texas. Taz Records was from Milwaukee.

12. Bloodwyn Pig: It’s Only Love (Mick Abrahams)
Ahead Rings Out: A&M Records Canada SP-4210
London UK
Mick Abrahams: guitar, vocal
Jack Lancaster: flute, violin, sax
Andy Pyle: bass
Ron Berg: drums
Produced by Andy Johns
Recorded at Morgan Studios, Willesden, UK, April 1969

Mick Abrahams b. Luton, UK Apr 7, 1943

Jethro Tull hit the scene in a big way in 1968, releasing their incredible first album, “This Was”. But all was not well in Jethro Tull: disputes lead to guitarist Mick Abrahams quitting the band shortly after the album was released. In response he formed a blues-rock band he called Bloodwyn Pig. They only recorded 2 albums but both hit the top ten on the UK Albums Chart.

13. Jimi Hendrix Experience: All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
Electric Ladyland: Reprise Records 2RS 6307
NYC
Jimi Hendrix: guitar, bass, lead vocals
Mitch Mitchell: drums, bg vocals
Noel Redding: bg vocals
Dave Mason: bg vocals, 12 string guitar
Brian Jones: vibraslap
Produced by Jimi Hendrix
Recorded Jan 21, 1969 at Olympic Studios, London & The Record Plant, NYC

Note that although Noel Redding was still officially a part of The Experience, he only sang backup vocals on this song; the bass playing was all Jimi.

14. Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians w Tony Craig: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
(Kern / Harbach)
Lombardoland: Decca DLP 5041
London ON
Guy Lombardo: violin
Tony Craig:
Others not listed
