And Now for The Particulars:
Hour One

1.   James Clark Institute: Company Hearse (James Clark)
45 rpm single: No label or serial no.
Toronto, ON
James Clark, guitar, drums, vocals
Moe Berg, guitars, slide, bass
Greg Condie: organ
Produced by Mo Berg, 2013
Recorded by Dave Clarke at TA2 Studios, Toronto
Mixed by Laurence Currie at Sunnyside Studios, Toronto
Mastered by Noah Mintz at The Lacquer Channel, Toronto
http://www.clarkinstitute.com

As a drummer, Toronto’s James Clark wasn’t satisfied; he always wanted to write and perform his own songs. So he stepped out from behind the kit and self-financed a recording that brought him international attention. Instead of self-producing the songs, he smartly asked Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness) to do it and the result was stellar. That’s the way it should be done, kids.

2.   Gordon Lightfoot: If I Could (G Lightfoot)
Back Here On Earth: United Artists Records UAS 6672
Toronto
Gordon Meredith Lightfoot: rhythm guitar, vocals

John Arthur Stockfish: bass
Produced by Elliot Frederic Mazer
Recorded by Charles Edward Tallent & William Edward Blachly, Sept 1968 in Mount Juliet, Tenn
Released November 1, 1969

For some reason, Lightfoot decided to include the legal names of all persons involved with his last studio album for United Artists. It was produced by the same Elliot Mazer who worked over the years with many of Neil Young’s albums. I had no idea that red Shea was a Milty!

3.   Moe Koffman: Sunshowers (Moe Koffman / Doug Riley)

Morris "Moe" Koffman, OC (b. Toronto 28 December 1928 – 28 March 2001)

Koffman received PRO Canada's Wm Harold Moon Award in 1981 and the Toronto Arts award for music in 1991. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (1997), and named an Officer of the Order of Canada (1993). He was named Flutist of the Year by the Annual Jazz Report Awards for 1993 and 1994

Koffman died of cancer in Orangeville, Ontario at the age of 72.

4.   Lilo: C’est Magnifique (Cole Porter)
C’est Magnifique: MGM Records E 3596
Paris FR
Lilo: vocals
Nick Perito: conductor
Ray Charles Singers
Produced 1957

She couldn’t speak English so didn’t understand the words to the songs. Sang them phonetically. Came to America early 1953 to perform in Can Can on Broadway. Was later claimed to be “Frances greatest export since Champagne”. At least, that’s the way she was marketed! She calls ‘Cest Magnifique’ the Frenchiest song ever written by an American (Cole Porter).

Clifton Chenier b. Opelousas Louisiana June 25, 1925 / d. Dec 12, 1987 Lafayette LA

The undisputed King of Zydeco by the man who basically invented the genre by getting his brother to play the all metal washboard vest to define it. The two together were all that was required: accordion and frottoir (rub board), but add in a great rhythm section and horns (sax by Clifton’s son, CJ who later switched to accordion to lead the band after his father’s death).

Le danse de la limonade is a Cajun country favourite, performed here by a Quebecois band. It’s all about swearing off partying and alcohol on Saturday nights only to repeat this a week later! Apparently the singer makes a big pig out of himself.

One of the all-time great, and well loved Canadian/Acadian fiddlers, Lucky Ambeault (known as Ambo) only put out one solo album, back in 1962 on the Toronto based Canatal Records label using a band that he performed with for years, Sons of the Saddle featuring the Seibert Brothers (who also recorded for Canatal). Bootlegger’s was first recorded by Joseph Allard as “Le reel du cultivateur” in 1929 and has become a Quebecois standard.

A High School band lead by one of the world’s greatest pan players, Trinidadian born Torontonian Selwyn Gomes. He began playing pans (steel drums) in Trinidad as a kid but he had to sneak out to do so since Calypso music was considered ghetto; only poor gangs played pans! He eventually left home to pursue his panning, eventually joining Trinidad’s first rate Calypso band, The Tropiotones which played Toronto’s CNE in 1955. He decided then to emigrate to Canada where he formed the Toronto Tropiotones band. Eventually he went into teaching and in 1970 worked at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute in Scarborough where he obviously formed this steel band.

One of the most underrated songwriters, Ayers formed a band that rivaled Pink Floyd in London’s underground scene. Soft Machine were formed in mid-1966 by Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (bass, guitar, vocals), David Allen (guitar) and Mike Ratledge (organ). British rock journalist Nick Kent wrote: "Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett were the two most important people in British pop music. Ayers died in his sleep at home in France in 2013.

Hour Two: Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets

Nick Mason decided to put a new band together early in 2018 to go back and revive the music of the early Pink Floyd. Determined NOT to put a tribute band together, he wanted to just go out and play the songs that so few had ever seen performed live! Songs like “Bike” are included in the live set. He put together a great band who performed April 16 at Toronto’s Sony Centre and they’re excellent! Just to see the grand master Floyd drummer in action again after so many years away from his craft was worth the price of admission. And he still has his chops. His band consists of Guy Pratt, bass, vocals; Gary Kemp: guitar, vocals; Lee Harris: guitar, bg vocals; Dom Beken, keys.

1.    Pink Floyd: Astronomie Domini (Syd Barrett)
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn: Capitol Canada / EMI - mono  T 6242
London / Cambridge UK
Syd Barrett: guitar, vocals
Roger Waters: bass
Nick Mason: drums
Rick Wright: keys
Peter Jenner: announcements
Produced by Norman Smith 1967
Recorded at Abby Road Studio 3 by Peter Brown

The very first track off the very first LP and the very first words served up are by the bands’ then-manager, Peter Jenner. This track defined Pink Floyd in many of the minds of their early fans: psychedelic space-rock.

2.   Pink Floyd: Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun (Roger Waters)
A Saucerful of Secrets: Capitol - ST 6279
London / Cambridge UK
Roger Waters – vocals, bass guitar, gong
Richard Wright – Farfisa organ, vibraphone, celesta
Nick Mason – drums (played with timpani mallets)
Syd Barrett – electric guitar
David Gilmour – electric guitar
Norman Smith – voice
Produced by Norman Smith 1968
Recorded at Abby Road Studio 3 by Peter Brown

This is the only PF song to feature Nick Mason on lead vocals.
The song is about a shell-shocked soldier who lost his leg in World War II. It is the first mention of war in a Pink Floyd song, something that would become a common theme in Roger Waters' lyrics, Roger having lost his father thus in 1944. Waters later claimed that the song was actually about his father.

3.   Pink Floyd: Lucifer Sam (Syd Barrett)
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn: Capitol Canada / EMI - mono  T 6242
London / Cambridge UK
Syd Barrett: guitar, vocals
Roger Waters: bass
Nick Mason: drums
Rick Wright: keys
Produced by Norman Smith 1967
Recorded at Abby Road Studio 3 by Peter Brown

4.   Pink Floyd: If (Roger Waters)
Atom Heart Mother: Harvest Records SKAO-382
Cambridge / London UK
Roger Waters: lead and backing vocals, classical acoustic guitar, bass guitar
David Gilmour: slide electric guitar
Richard Wright: piano, Hammond organ
Nick Mason: drums
Produced by Pink Floyd, 1970
Recorded by Peter Brown and Allan Parsons at Abby Road Studios, London

Rolling Stone gave "If" a negative review, calling the song "English folk at its deadly worst. It's soft and silly." while Paste Magazine said of it: "If" as one of Roger Waters' best compositions. It is believed to be about Syd Barrett.

5. Pink Floyd: The Grand Visier’s Garden Party: Entrance (Nick Mason)
Ummagumma: Capitol Records STBB 318
Birmingham UK
Nick Mason: drums, timpani, percussion, Mellotron, xylophone:
Lindy Mason: flute
Arranged by Ron Geesin
Produced by Norman Smith
Recorded by Peter Mew, 1969

I’ve used this Ummagumma track to talk over. It’s Nick Mason’s solo effort as each of the four members of the band went on to do a solo track on one of the album’s two records.

6.   Pink Floyd: Arnold Layne (Syd Barrett)
Relics: Harvest Records - mono -  SW 750
London / Cambridge UK
Syd Barrett: guitar, vocals
Roger Waters: bass
Nick Mason: drums
Rick Wright: keys
Produced by Joe Boyd, Feb 27, 1967
Recorded at Sound Techniques, Chelsea

Compilation Released: 14 May 1971The band were first brought into the recording studio to make Arnold Layne just before they signed with Capitol Records. The result: Joe Boyd lost his new-found band. Having trouble coming up with a follow-up hit, EMI allowed producer Norman Smith to bring the band back into Boyd’s studio (in London) to get the feel right.

7.   Pink Floyd: Burning Bridges (Rick Wright / Roger Waters)
Obscured By Clouds: Harvest ST-11078
Cambridge / London UK
Rick Wright: keys, vocals
Roger Waters: bass, vocals
Nick Mason: drums
Dave Gilmore: guitar, vocals
Produced by Pink Floyd, 1972
Recorded Strawberry Studios, Château d'Hérouville, Hérouville, Île-de-France, France
Mixed at Morgan Studios, London

Having already started recording their ‘piece de resistance’, Dark Side of the Moon, the band were hired to produce another movie soundtrack (the money was just too good to resist), La Vallee. They went to France to create the songs and Nick Mason remembers: “the sessions were very hurried.” Nevertheless, it was a successful seller, coming off the back of Meddle. The band then went back to work on Dark Side.

8.   Vegetable Man (Syd Barrett)
Downloaded
London UK
Syd Barrett: guitar, lead vocals
Richard Wright: keyboards, backing vocals
Roger Waters: bass guitar, backing vocals
Nick Mason: drums, percussion, backing vocals
Produced by Norman Smith
Recorded at Abby Road Studio 3 by Peter Brown 9–11 October 1967

Vegetable man was considered for the band's third single or for inclusion on A Saucerful of Secrets. Recording began in the fall of 1967 to be considered for the B side of Scream Thy Last Scream (also unreleased) and it was never actually finished or mastered. However, the band decided to keep the song unreleased for various reasons and it wasn’t until Nick Mason uploaded a copy online as an mp3. It wasn’t officially released until it appeared on The Early Years 1965–1972 box set. It was performed live for the first time by Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets on his 2018 European Tour.

9.   Corporal Clegg (Roger Waters)
A Saucerful of Secrets: Capitol - ST 6279
London / Cambridge UK
David Gilmour – electric guitars, lead vocals (verses and bridges), kazoo
Nick Mason – drums, percussion, lead vocals (verses)
Rick Wright – Farfisa organ, lead vocals (choruses)
Roger Waters – bass, backing vocals
Norman Smith – voice
Produced by Norman Smith, 1968
Recorded at Abby Road Studios, Studio 3

This is the only PF song to feature Nick Mason on lead vocals.
The song is about a shell-shocked soldier who lost his leg in World War II. It is the first mention of war in a Pink Floyd song, something that would become a common theme in Roger Waters' lyrics, Roger having lost his father thus in 1944. Waters later claimed that the song was actually about his father.

10. Pink Floyd: Cymbaline (Roger Waters)
More: Capitol Records Canada ST 6318
Cambridge UK
Roger Waters – bass guitar, tape effects, percussion, backing vocals
Nick Mason – drums, percussion
Richard Wright – Farfisa Combo Compact Duo organ, Hammond organ, piano, vibraphone
David Gilmour – acoustic, electric, slide, and flamenco guitars, percussion, lead vocals
Produced by Pink Floyd, 1969
Recorded at Pye Studios, London

More was the first soundtrack the band worked on and, unfortunately, the movie sucked so… My friend Jim Roberts was just talking to me about how awful the movie was but the music on the album (which sold badly) was brilliant. Just as the band were beginning to feel strongly about their new direction after the trouble with Syd.

11. Pink Floyd: Apples And Oranges (Syd Barrett)
Masters of Rock: Pathe Marconi / EMI C 062 04299
London / Cambridge UK
Syd Barrett: electric guitar, lead vocals
Richard Wright: Hammond organ, piano, electric piano, backing vocals, lead vocals (bridge)
Roger Waters: bass guitar, backing vocals
Nick Mason: drums, tambourine
Produced by Norman Smith, 1967
Recorded at Abby Road Studio 3 by Peter Brown

Pink Floyd, along with Barrett, mimed the song on their first US televised performances on The Pat Boone Show and American Bandstand. Barrett kept his lips closed during the first performance but mimed competently on the latter show
