Gibraltar, Jamaica
Millie Small: vocal
Ernest Ranglin: music director

Millicent Dolly May Small 6 October 1946 (age 69) Gibraltar, Clarendon, Jamaica

Won the Verve Johns Opportunity Hour talent contest at the age of twelve. Began recording in Jamaica 1962 which brought her to the attention of Chris Blackwell who became her manager and legal guardian, who in late 1963 took her to  London, where she was given intensive training in dancing and diction. There she made her fourth recording, an Ernest Ranglin rearrangement of "My Boy Lollipop" It was the first major hit for Island Records (although it was actually released on the Fontana label because Chris Blackwell, Island's owner, did not want to overextend its then-meager resources).

This is ska which eventually lead into the Rocksteady style which eventually transformed into Reggae.  Even at this quick pace, the guitarist accents the off-beat which became the sound of the people. Rocksteady was a form that originated in Jamaica around 1966. The term was coined from an Alton Ellis song called Rocksteady which featured a slower dance style of ska which was transformed into Reggae music. This happened in the late 60s after two key musical arrangers moved to Canada: Jackie Mittoo (of the Skatalites) and Lynn Taitt to work in more modern recording studios. That’s where they developed to recording techniques incorporating electric organ and horns into the music. Taitt became the arranger for Toronto based band The West Indian Federated Club and helped develop the reggae sound.

Really the last of the rocksteady bands, these guys lasted until 1978 when Sibbles quit the band to concentrate on a solo career. But everybody loved this band!
