And Now for The Particulars:

Hour One

Jon Brooks b. King City ON, 1968

former member of The Norge Union, Days of You and The Headstones.

Jon Brooks first came to my attention in December 2005 via Pat Simmonds who was, at that time, host of CIUT’s Atlantic Ceilidh show. Jon was part of a live Winter Season broadcast featuring Magoo, Laura Bird, Jon Brooks, Danny Bakan, Chris McKhool, David Woodhead, Daithi Connaughton and Loka: Loretto Reid, October Browne, Kelly Hood & Anne Lederman. Jon sang How Good It Is To Love Someone, How Right It Is To Care and Mimico.

I was so impressed with Jon that I invited him on as guest of my Back To The Sugarcamp program in March 2006 where he sang Kept Plans and Stairwell Anniversary live.

In March 2007 Pat Simmonds handed me a demo for an album he was producing for Jon called Ours And The Shepherds from which I chose to play Tajik Boy.

While I was doing folk oriented music shows at CIUT, I started handing out Porcupine Awards to those who deserved some kind of recognition for the music they give to us. In 2008, at the 19th Annual Awards Ceremony held live over CIUT, I gave Jon the Mac Beattie Award for singing identifiably Canadian songs. Like Mimico. Jon was back that year for another The Sugar Camp: Atlantic Ceilidh Seasonal  2 hour Seasonal Special where he sang You Are Loved, Auction Days and War Resister.

By 2011 I was so enthralled with Jon’s songs that I present him with the Golden Quill Award for songwriting at that year’s Porcupine Awards show. Thus he joined the ranks of Rosemary Phelan, Jory Nash, Tannis Slimmon, David Francey, Stephen Fearing, David Bradstreet, Brian Blain, Danny Bakan, Bob Snider, Willie P Bennett et all: - the list goes back to 1991!

The last time I played one of his songs over the air was in June 2013, just a few months before I started doing this show 33.45.78 and concentrating on vinyl records. The song I chose for that occasion was Mimico: still one of my favourites.

In 2014 Jon released The Smiling and Beautiful Countryside. 2018 saw the release of, what I think is best record yet, No One Travels Alone which is available on vinyl. This album was recorded in a style called Corona in which each song begins with the last lines of the song before until the last song circles back to the first one on the album. It was rated as one of the best releases of 2018 by National Public Radio in the States. Over the years he’s been nominated six times for Canadian Folk Music Awards but has yet to win one which, to me, is kind of mind boggling. Wake up Canadian Folk Music Awards!

And now, in 2019, Jon Brooks is releasing a single High Five and another LP called Moth Nor Rust II.

This is the only live album that was released while The Who were still in their original line-up of Roger Daltry, Pete Townsend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. After touring the US with Tommy, group returned to England at the end of 1969 with a desire to release a live album from concerts recorded earlier in the US. However, Townsend balked at the prospect of listening to all the recordings to try and decide which tracks would make the best album and instructed sound engineer Bob Pridden to burn the tapes. Which he did. Two shows were consequently scheduled, one at the University of Leeds and the other in Hull, for the express purpose of recording and releasing a live album. Since its release, Live at Leeds has been cited by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time.
