Bo Diddley wrote "Who Do You Love" in 1956. The idea came to him in Kansas City, where he heard a group of children trying to out-brag one another using a particular rhythm. "It was like an African chant, and I wanted words that would suit it", Bo Diddley recalled. Inspired by Muddy Waters 1954 hit "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", he wanted to outdo songwriter Willie Dixon's lyrical swagger:

I'm telling this chick ... how bad I am, so she can go tell the cat she's hanging with, "this dude is something else." That's what it kinda meant, cat ridin' rattlesnakes and kissin' boa constrictors and stuff.

In naming Diddley’s lead guitarist Jody Williams to its list of "35 Blues Guitarists Who Definitely Started It All", Spin magazine adds, "His solo on Diddley's 'Who Do You Love?' is a lesson in evil".

Robert Edward Taylor b. Washington DC Feb 18, 1934

As a young man, Taylor moved to New York City and sang in doo-wop groups with singers who later joined successful acts such as Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers and Little Anthony and the Imperials. In fact, Little Anthony was obviously a huge influence on the vocal style that Taylor loved to use. He met a band with a few names, but based out of Calgary they called themselves The Calgary Shades and were totally interracial: black, white, aboriginal, Chinese. Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong among them, and Floyd Sneed (later drummer for Three Dog Night). With Taylor joining them they renamed themselves Little Daddy & The Bachelors. At Chong's suggestion they billed themselves as "Four Niggers and a Chink" (or, bowing to pressure, "Four N's and a C") before taking on the moniker Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers.

In 1965, Supremes members Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard heard the band and alerted Motown’s Berry Gordy, Jr. who brought the Vancouvers to Motown Records in Detroit, and signed them to his Gordy Records imprint. They recorded a few records then the band broke up. It was messy to say the least!

14. Motherlode: When I Die
(William Smith / Steve Kennedy)
When I Die: Revolver Records RLPS 501
London ON
William Smith: keys, vocals
Ken Marco: electric guitar, vocals
Wayne Stone: drums
Steve Kennedy: tenor sax, harmonica, vocals
Carol Kaye: bass, acoustic guitar
Produced by Mort Ross & Doug Riley, 1969
Recorded by Terry Brown

William Smith and Steve Kennedy had been playing together with Eric Mercury and Dianne Brooks in a Toronto band called the Soul Searchers that Mercury and Brooks fronted as lead vocalists. After the Soul Searchers broke up, first Kennedy and then Smith joined a group called Grant Smith & The Power.

Smith and Kennedy formed Motherlode in 1969 and relocated to London, Ontario, where they struggled and stayed with friends. They finally got a break following their debut at the Image Club when Mort Ross signed them to Revolver Records that same year.
Their first single, "When I Die" that was produced by Doug Riley and Terry Brown did not make any headway on the radio. A reciprocal deal in the US with Buddah Records made the song a hit reaching Number 18 on the charts. The song sold more than 500,000 copies and it eventually climbed to Number 1 in the Canadian charts.

RPM Magazine, based out of Toronto, decided to declare them Canada's first 'supergroup' ... which was a bit prophetic as the original band split up only a couple of months later, with most members joining Dr Music. Because producer Mort Ross owned the band’s name, several editions of Motherlode tried to carry on the cause.

The final track is a cover of the Beatles "I Saw Her Standing There", a song Richard considered to have been inspired by his music. Richard's version is played at a slower tempo to the original and features a horn section. Little Richard met the Beatles when they supported him on a 1962 European tour, and considered the band "some of the greatest songwriters ever been".

Bonus Track:

16. The Isley Brothers: Twist & Shout
