Montreal
Denis Champoux: lead guitar
Guy Martineau: keys
Jean Poiré: bass, sax
Michel Patry: guitar
Réjean Careau: drums

The Mégatones, one of the pioneer YeYe rock bands in Quebec, kicked things off with their Voici les Mégatones album in 1962. The single “Rideau S.V.P.” became a classic. Beginning in 1964, the Beatles' mega- success in North America led to a new wave of commercial “yé-yé” music groups in Quebec.

“Yé-yé” is a term for French pop that emerged from France in the 60s and was soon used in Quebec as well.  The term "yé-yé" was derived from "yeah! yeah!" from the Beatles’ song She Loves You. In France it was mostly the domain of female pop stars while in Quebec the term was generally used to describe young rock bands.

The band recorded a track for Elektra records but Luke Gibson quit the band to join new Toronto super group Kensington Market. McKenna was then briefly recruited by The Ugly Ducklings who were on the verge of breaking up. McKenna Mendelson Mainline followed. The current new Mojo Magazine (Nov 2019) features a track by The Apostles called Not Too Far, written by Mike. He’s still performing with the Apostles.

I became friends with Allan in 1988 when we were doing back-to-back radio shows here at CIUT. He did a great country show. He met his wife, Jen, here at CIUT too; she was also a station radio host. Later, they married and moved back to Calgary, where  Allan was from. He immediately got a show at the University radio station he helped found, CJSW.

As a member of Lost & Profound, Allen was a part of The Moose Records acts which included The Grievous Angels, Cajun Ramblers, Rheostatics, Big Smoke, Bob Snider, The Celtic Gales, Polka Dogs, Lazy Grace and The Bookmen. This excellent track about beer commercials was included on a Moose compilation CD released by Polygram.

Recorded by Jeff Wolpert and David Stinson at Inception Sound, Toronto

Willie P was one of the best singer-songwriters to come out of the cool London, Ontario folk scene. He was a great musician, whether on guitar, mandolin or harmonica and his songwriting was top notch. But instead of furthering his career at the end of the 1970s, having released three albums of his songs, Willie joined a bluegrass band. Just when his star was rising a second time at the end of the 1980s, he decided to take a gig with singer Fred Eaglesmith.

Willie was the inspiration for the band Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, named after a Willie P song. Their first album, over 25 years ago, was a tribute album to Willie P. It has since become a successful band comprised of three extremely talented front-men: Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson. All of their influences are used to forge a union of songs with a great rhythm section. So we’ll see where this leads us!

Stephen Fearing and Andy Lowe met at a folk festival out in Western Canada, quite possibly in Winnipeg or Edmonton, and started doing the odd tour and record together. An extremely odd combination and yet it works fabulously.

Yep, just 1 of 3 copies in existence on ‘unmastered’ vinyl. I did a couple of things to bring out the sound a bit. It was given to me by Andy and Stephen when they guested on my program a few years ago. They made three copies at a record automat, featuring six of the songs from their CD Tea & Confidences which came out in 2014.

Stephen was born in Ireland and raised in BC where he rode a wave of popularity in his youth back in the mid-1980s. A guitar sleuth, his solo career took off when he signed with True North Records in the 1990s where he met label-mate Colin Linden who asked him to join with his Rodeo Kings project.

The Secret of Climbing is a fabulous, new record recorded for vinyl on analogue tape with no overdubs, just live off the floor. The way things used ta be.

After moving to St. John’s in the mid-1960s, he became a member of the The Krystals and The Mountain Men, playing rock and roll and country music on electric lead guitar.  In 1970, Gordon was invited by producer Tom Cahill to be in the house band for a season of CBC television show, All Around the Circle.

Gordon was awarded Instrumental Artist by the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1997. He was honoured again in 2007 as Instrumental Artist/Group of the Year award and nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award that same year for his recording, The Yellow Sky. Mr. Joe has recorded some fine albums since leaving Mainline in the early 70s. But this one was one of the best! Utilizing the incredible violin playing of Ben Mink and Production wizard Colin Linden, who also supplies bass and guitar. But the real stars on this album (other than Mr. Joe) are the Shuffle Demons. That's what sets this particular album apart. And it worked so well!

If these guys woulda been Americans, they would have been quite successful but back in the 1960s, being Canadian meant few studios, little or no airplay, gigs 8 hours of touring apart and very little in the way of a music industry. If you didn’t go down to the States like The Sparrow from Toronto did and becoming Steppenwolf along the way…

Recorded by Bill Cooper & Richard Podolor at American Recording Co, Studio City CA in the Fall of 1967

Gabriel Mekler (1942 – 1977)

It was Mekler who suggested the name "Steppenwolf" to the band's members, having just read the Hermann Hesse novel. As the producer on Steppenwolf, the 1968 debut by that group, Mekler helped craft the sonic onslaught that would unleash the term "heavy metal" upon the world, a line from the brother of drummer, Jerry Edmonton, in the song, "Born to Be Wild". A year after the Steppenwolf recordings, Mekler launched hits from Three Dog Night such as "One", "Try a Little Tenderness", "Eli's Coming", "Easy to Be Hard", and "Celebrate". Other studio credits include keyboard work with Cher, Donovan and David Clayton-Thomas. Mekler remained in demand for his production talent until his death, from a motorcycle accident, in September 1977.
