His hits included ‘Farmer’s Song’ (1973), "Hurricane of Change" (also 1973), "Do You Dream of Being Somebody" (1975), and "Whispering Rain" (1979). He holds 11 Juno Awards, is a pilot, a painter and a Member of the Order of Canada, and also plays occasionally with Toronto act ‘Lunch At Allens’.

Bristol UK
Russ Conway: piano

Produced by Geoff Love, 1959

Trevor Herbert Stanford b. 2 Sept 1925 Bristol / d. 16 Nov 2000 (75) Eastbourne, Sussex

Russ Conway is the epitome of the term, Recording Artist. He recorded three albums in 1959 and made a slew of them throughout the ‘60s and continued at that output until well into the 1980s. People that made good, dependable, dancing music for hairdos and suits.

3.   Slim Harpo: I’m A King Bee
(James Moore a.k.a. Slim Harpo)
45 single bw I Got Love If You Want It: Excello Records 2113
Baton Rouge, LA
Slim Harpo: vocals
Gabriel "Guitar Gable" Perrodin: guitar
John "Fats" Perrodin: bass
Clarence "Jockey" Etienne: drums
Produced by J.D. Miller, 1957

James Isaac Moore aka Slim Harpo b. Lobdell, Louisiana January 11, 1924 / d. January 31, 1970 Baton Rouge, LA (46)

Slim Harpo’s first solo release, for Excello Records in 1957, based in Nashville, was "I'm a King Bee", backed with "I Got Love If You Want It". (The Rolling Stones later released a live album called “I Got Live If You Want It”).  Harpo played guitar in his live shows, but he usually used other guitarists when recording. The Moody Blues reportedly took their name from an instrumental track of Slim's called "Moody Blues". The Slim Harpo Music Awards are awarded annually in Baton Rouge, named in his honor. Proceeds from the awards benefit the "Music in the Schools" outreach program. Never a full-time musician, Harpo owned a trucking business during the 1960s.

The Rolling Stones recorded "I'm a King Bee" for their 1964 debut album. Mick Jagger has since commented "What's the point in listening to us doing 'I'm a King Bee' when you can hear Slim Harpo do it?" A London group called The Tea Set, which was soon to be renamed Pink Floyd, recorded "I'm a King Bee" in December 1964. John Belushi performed it on a 1976 broadcast of Saturday Night Live. In 2008, Slim Harpo's original version of "I'm a King Bee" received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award

William Sherille Levise Jr b. Hamtramck, Michigan February 26, 1945

As a teenager, Ryder sang backup with a black soul-music group known as the Peps, but racial tensions interfered and he had to quit the group. He then formed his first band, Tempest, when he was still at High School, and played at a Detroit soul music club called The Village. Ryder next appeared fronting a band named Billy Lee & The Rivieras, which had limited success until they met songwriter / record producer Bob Crewe. Crewe renamed the group Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels who had hits like ‘Devil With The Blue Dress On’, ‘Jenny Take A Ride’ and ‘Sock It To Me.’ Ryder was the last person to perform with Otis Redding, singing "Knock On Wood", on December 9, 1967, in Cleveland, Ohio, on a local TV show called Upbeat. Redding and four members of his touring band, The Bar-Kays, died in a plane crash the following day, December 10, 1967.

Indigenous to Cuba, a Charanga orchestra is based around a five key wooden flute with violins, piano, double bass, timbales and guiro (a percussive wooden fish). The Charanga can also include singers and congas. In the Charanga the violins play riffs that lock into the rhythm section and give the music a real driving nature

Modest William Theodore Sklepowich (Mickey Sheppard) b. Ethelbert, Man, 27 Mar 1932

Mickey began his recording career as part of the Ukrainian musical comedy team, Mickey & Bunny. Mickey was a pharmacist and his wife, Bunny, was a substitute school teacher. They released over a dozen albums on the V Records label.

On this particular album, Mickey’s first solo shot, Producer and label owner Alec Groshak on the back cover claims:

“This album was begged, compiled, decorated, revived, doctored, updated, collected, assembled, amassed, scraped together, dredged up, loused up, and buggered up by Mickey at the insistence of thousands of fans and myself. You have in your hands one of the finest English-Ukrainian albums available today. Play it at your next party and see action begin. Sing-a-long with it and make up your own verses. (Sorry…but Mickey didn’t dare put in some of the  better verses that he knows)”.

V Records issued, what is possibly the most sought after Canadian collectible 45, The Squires doing ‘The Sultan’ bw ‘Aurora’, issued in 1963. This was Neil Young's first 45 released when he was 17. Oh Donna Clara was first recorded by Al Jolson in 1931 from the Broadway musical The Wonder Bar. According to composer Irving Caesar: “Although mostly forgotten now, Oh Donna Clara was one of the most famous songs of the vaudeville circuit, performed comically in English, Russian and German Yiddish. “Jolson had no trouble with it,” Caesar remembered. “He was a Litvak; he talked Litvak Yiddish. But neither of us could read Yiddish. I had to learn it by ear from a folk singer… I taught it to Al, and it was one of the greatest things he ever did.”

A connection with McKenna Mendlesohn Mainline (who they had met in Australia) made Toronto a destination since they were refused a US work visa. John Read (bass)
Robin Boers (drums)
Produced by Bill Huard, 1966
Recorded by Dave Leonard, Ray Lawrence, Gary youngblood & Terry Vollum at
Stea Phillips, NYC - Hallmark Sound, Toronto - Bay Recording, Toronto

The Ducks were really the first local band we thought of as Stars. They got together in 1965 as a Rolling Stones attitude band with one of them in a Brian Jones haircut and the lead vocals approximating Mick Jagger. After releasing their first hit, “Nothin’”, they were one of many bands who got to open for the Stones at Maple Leaf Gardens before 15,000 fans.

She Ain’t No Use To Me was a good follow-up but it wasn’t until they released Gaslight in 1967 that they hit the number one spot in Canada. In 1968 Yorkville Records released the band's debut album, 'Somewhere Outside', and Mick Jagger proclaimed The Ugly Ducklings as "my favourite Canadian band". The trouble was, they had already disbanded.

13. The Paupers: It’s Your Mind
(Skip Prokop / Adam Mitchell)
Magic People: Verve Forecast - FTS 3026
Toronto ON
Adam Mitchell, guitar, vocals
Skip Prokop, drums, vocals
Dennis Gerrard, bass
Chuck Beal, guitar
Produced by Rick Shorter, 1967

The Paupers were, I think, the most psychedelic band in Toronto at the time. They got to open for Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Soft Machine at Toronto’s CNE Coliseum. They played Monterray Pop Festival but played poorly due to their bass player getting totally stoned and, thus, were not used in the movie.

14. Mandala: Lovitis
(H Scales / A Vance)
Classics: WEA: 25 23291
Toronto, ON
Domenic Troiano: guitar
Roy Kenner: vocal
Pentii 'Whitey' Glan: drums
Don Elliot: bass
Hugh Sullivan: organ
The Atlantic Horns
Produced by Arif Mardin & Jerry Greenberg, 1968
Recorded by Adrian Barber, George Semkiw, Ivan Bradley at Sound Canada Recording Centre

Uncertain as to which engineer worked on Loveitis, but the album had three engineers. It was around this time that Semkiw began hanging around with Jack Richardson (producer of the Guess Who), learning the ropes.

Bush were signed to the ABC label and thus were label-mates with The James Gang. After Joe Walsh left them they looked to the Bush lads to take Joe’s place. He sang on four James Gang album, the first two with Troiano on guitar. After a year playing in the James Gang, Troiano left and came back home to Toronto where he began working with The Guess Who and his girlfriend, whom he later married, Shawne Jackson. He also released a string of solo albums, ending with 1981 release of Black Market. He continued working with Kenner, who returned to Toronto after his stint with the James Gang, for many years.

Rick Aston bass
Jed MacKay keys
Rick McKim drums
Wayne Roworth guitar, lead vocal
Chas White lead guitar
Produced by Bill Misener, 1970
Recorded by Mark Smith, RCA Studios, Toronto April 1970

When I was in my teens, I played drums in a short-lived band featuring guitarist / singer Wayne Rowarth. He lent me and the bass player his own recording of this album to learn our parts so that we could do this live. That was where I first learned of the band called It’s All Meat, from Richmond Hill.

16. Mahogany Rush: Magic Man

Montreal QC
Frank Marino: guitar, vocals
Paul Harwood: Fender bass
James Ayoub: drums
Produced by Frank Marino, 1972
Recorded by Hubert Liesker
Mastered by Yvon Caron

An album dedicated to the late Jimi Hendrix! And it sounds it. A power trio from Montreal doing a great job of sounding just like Hendrix. This is from their first raw release when their influences were showing the most. They did go on to have a successful career once they got their own voice. Marino is an incredible guitar player.

1.   Jim Vining: Pound One Out
(Jim Vining)
Pound One Out: EP Fervor Records – FVR06349
Victoria BC
Produced by Jim Vining, 2019

James Vining began song writing in 1972 when his first single on Concept Records ,”I Need Song”, received airplay across Canada starting with CHUM radio in Toronto. In 1979 he graduated from Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington with a BA in music. During the 1980’s he began song writing again, including jingle writing for Sea Coast Sound in his home town of Victoria, British Columbia.

2.   Bill Connors: Crunchy

Bill Connors: guitar
Tom Kennedy: electric bass
Kim Plainfield: drums
Produced by Bill Connors & Doug Epstein, 1987
Recorded by Doug Epstein at RPM Studios, NYC June 1987
Mastered by Creg Calbi at Sterling Sound NYC

It’s either a chocolate candy bar called a Crunchy or it’s crunchy peanut butter. I tend to believe the latter. I was given three excellent Bill Connors records from my late friend John McCann who died a couple of years ago. So this is to remember him!

Special Feature: My Favourite 16 minutes of The James Gang

This is one of my favorite half-albums of all times. The second side has never done anything for me though, which I find bizarre – it’s so totally different. Where side one is a completely integrated set, the second side is like a totally different kind of album. Acoustic, quiet, without the guts and drive of side one.

The James Gang of Cleveland, Ohio, originated in 1966. The name was thought up by drummer Jim Fox.  Fox first played with the Cleveland-area band The Outsiders but left them in 1965 to attend college and thus, was NOT featured on their big hit song, Time Won't Let Me.

At first the band was a five piece but by 1968 had devolved into a power trio of bass, drums and guitar. Joe Walsh, recruited from the band called The Measles, was new lead vocalist and guitar player. In March 1969 the band, consisting of drummer Fox, Tom Kriss on bass and Walsh released its debut album. After that, Kriss left and was replaced by Dale Peters in time to record James Gang Rides Again. Joe Walsh left in 1972, replaced by two Torontonians: Domenic Troiano and Roy Kenner (lead vocals). Walsh formed the Barnstorm band and went on to work with The Eagles. He currently plays with Ringo Starr’s All-Star Band.

So here’s my favourite sixteen minutes of The James Gang as they rode again, in 1970. As it says on the album cover: “Made to be played loud”. So turn it up.

The Madcap Laughs: EMI / Harvest 064-1042611
Cambridge UK
Syd Barrett: guitar, vocal
Jerry Shirley: bass
Willie Wilson: drums
Produced by Syd Barrett and Dave Gilmour, 1969
Recorded June 12. Overdubs added June 13

This is considered to be one of Syd’s best post-Floyd songs, originally called "Clowns and Jugglers". The album's title, The Madcap Laughs, came as a result of co-producer David Gilmour mishearing a line from this song ("Well, the mad cat laughed at the man on the border...")

10. Hank Snow: Squid Jiggin’ Grounds
(Arthur Scammel)
The Singing Ranger: Bear Family Records - BCD 15476-3
Nashville, USA
Hank Snow: guitar, vocals
Produced by Steve Sholes and Chet Atkins for RCA, 1957

Clarence Eugene Snow aka The singing Ranger b. Brooklyn NS May 9, 1914 / d. December 20, 1999 (85) Madison, Tennessee

Written by a young 15 year old lad out on the Squid Jiggin’ Grounds in 1928, he just wrote about what he saw and heard. Arthur Reginald Scammel (b. Change Islands NL February 12, 1913 / d. August 28, 1995 St. John’s NL) was from the Change Islands in Newfoundland. His widely successful 1943 recording of the song is regarded as the first commercial recording of a Newfoundland folk song and one of the first Newfoundlanders to record.,

The song has been covered by various artists including Stompin’ Tom Connors. It obviously hit some kind of nerve for Hank Snow to record it in 1957 at the peak of his popularity.

Recorded by Roger Becheirian at Eden Studios and Advision Studios, London

The Groovies began in 1965 by school friends and went from playing Kingston Trio songs to a Rolling Stones style band. They were signed to Epic Records in 1969 and got to open for The Stooges and Alice Cooper. Eventually they discovered what they called “power-pop” after working in the UK in the mid-70s. They were linked to the punk rock movement and took The Ramones over to England. One of the things that lead to the band’s break-up was covering Beatles’ songs but they covered them really well. John Lennon claimed: "Please Please Me is my song completely. It was my attempt at writing a Roy Orbison song, would you believe it? I wrote it in the bedroom in my house at Menlove Avenue, which was my auntie's place". It was The Beatles second single.
