Malcolm Tomlinson (b. London UK 16 June 1946 – d. Toronto 2 April 2016)

Malcom was a neighbour of mine for many years, until he passed away in 2016. He started out in the early 1960s playing drums in London in a band called ‘The Panthers’. In January 1963, he joined Jeff Curtis & The Flames. The group recorded a five-track acetate with legendary producer Joe Meek before Tomlinson left (in mid-1964) to join ‘The Del Mar Trio’. In February 1965, the group recorded 4 tracks for EMI at Abbey Road. Two months later, they changed their name to ‘James Deane & The London Cats’. In June 1966, Tomlinson joined forces with two members of ‘The Noblemen’ which changed its name to ‘The Motivation’.

By the end of the 60s Tomlinson moved to Toronto  with his former colleague from ‘Jeff Curtis & The Flames’, guitarist Louis McKelvey. They formed the group called ‘Milkwood’ which performed at the legendary ‘Toronto Rock and Roll Revival’ at Varsity Stadium on 13 September 1969. The band also recorded an unreleased LP for Polydor Records. The pair also appeared on another unreleased LP, this time by Toronto singer Jay Telfer. McKelvey and Tomlinson then formed another new band based out of Toronto, Damage, but this was short-lived. Tomlinson played in a succession of local bands, including Syrinx, and a latter day version of Rhinoceros.

In 1973, Tomlinson appeared on (CIUT host) Bill King's album 'Goodbye Superdad' as well as on John Mills Cockell's first solo shot, 'Heartbeat'. He then joined Rick James' ‘Stone City Band’ and appeared on another LP that was never released. He later recorded with the ‘Bearfoot’ and then formed the Malcolm Tomlinson Band.

Pat Riccio: orchestra leader, alto sax
Produced 1964

Pat Riccio b. Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) ON 3 Dec 1918 /  d Toronto 23 Aug 1982

Joining the RCAF in 1941, he served as music director of the RCAF Streamliners, a 15-piece dance band that performed in England for the BBC and, alternating with Glenn Miller's (US) Army Air Force Band, at the Queensbury Club in London. Returning to Toronto after World War II, Riccio played in, or wrote arrangements for, the local dance bands of Bert Niosi, Mart Kenney, Art Hallman, and others. As a saxophonist, Riccio won polls conducted by CBC radio's 'Jazz Unlimited' in 1947 ('best alto') and 1949 ('best baritone'). Riccio's son Pat Riccio Jr played piano in his teens with Bobby Kris and the Imperials, worked during the 1960s in CBC Halifax pop music shows, and was music director 1975-87 for Anne Murray.

Jerry Causi: lead vocal
Victor Moulton: drums
Bruce Benson: bass
Geoffry Morris: guitar
Produced: September 1964
Arranged by Al Ham

Active between 1964 and 1967, were known for drummer Victor "Moulty" Molton's prosthetic hook used in place of his missing left hand to hold his drumstick. They also wore pirate outfits to fit Molton’s image. They received their biggest break when featured on Pan USA The T.A.M.I. tour in 1965 alongside other artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Supremes, Lesley Gore, Chuck Berry, James Brown & The Famous Flames, The Miracles, and Marvin Gaye. A later, minor hit, entitled "Moulty", was a humorous auto-biographical song about the drummer's life and losing his hand when he was 14. Moulton sang lead on the track, but instead of the original members, he was backed by a Toronto group, Levon & the Hawks, later to be known as The Band.

Gary Harold Lee Levitch, July 31, 1946, Los Angeles son of Jerry Lewis.

In 1965, Gary Lewis was Cash Box magazine's "Male Vocalist of the Year", winning against nominees Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Gary Lewis confirms that "She's Just My Style" is the song of his that gets the most airplay today on radio. He told interviewer in 2013 that he sought to emulate the style of The Beach Boys with the recording.

"That's exactly what we were going for too. Even before we started writing it we said 'Let's go for The Beach Boys thing; a little rock and roll with a lot of harmony and I was really happy the way we pulled it off."

The recording also has the distinction of being the very first session that legendary studio drummer Jim Keltner played on.

While appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, Gary screwed up while lip-synching this song. Gary was up front, on guitar, singing the vocals; when he thought the song was about to end cold, he stepped back, away from the microphone. However, the song had another bar to go and he had to rush back up to the mike to finish up.

6.   The Byrds: Just A Season
(Roger McGuinn)
Untitled: Columbia Records  G 30127
Los Angeles CA
Roger McGuinn: Lead guitar, vocals, moog
Clarence White: slide guitar
Skip Batton: bass
Gene Parsons: drums
Produced by Terry Melcher  1970

The studio LP was recorded at Columbia Studios, Hollywood CA by Terry Melcher (the other LP is live)

This was the most stable and longest lived of any configuration of The Byrds, lasting 3 years without personnel changes. The band still had not made up their minds regarding an album title when Terry Melcher, while filling out record company documentation for the album sessions, wrote the placeholder "(Untitled)" in a box specifying the album's title. A misunderstanding ensued and before anyone associated with the band had realized, Columbia Records had pressed up the album with that title, including the parentheses. It was the last real incarnation of the Byrds.

7.   Hands And Teeth: Not The Same

Before The Light EP: Underground Operations - UOP J-44
Toronto ON

Toronto band that I featured on my program June 9, 2014 when they released their vinyl EP. They broke up shortly afterwards. Natasha Pasternak is the daughter of singer / songwriter / music producer Suzanne Pasternak and grew up in Prince Edward County, Ontario. She now makes her home in California.

The Diodes: Columbia Records PES 90441
Toronto ON
Paul Robinson: vocal
John Catto: guitar
Ian MacKay: bass
John Hamilton: drums
Produced by Bob Gallo, 1977
Recorded and mixed by Hayward Parrott at Manta Sound, Toronto

Another hard luck band who released two LPs for Columbia (and Epic) in the late 70s. They were dumped after their records didn’t sell very well, moved to England and breaking up by 1982. Formed by students from the Ontario College of Art, they played their first gig opening for Talking Heads in January 1977. Oddly, this album also features a cover of Wild in the Streets soundtrack song, “Shape of Things To Come” by Max Frost & The Troopers.

9.   Lynx: Bye Bye
(Tony Caputo)
Sneak Attack: Quality Records SV 1953
Toronto
Tony Caputo: lead vocal, keys, sax
Norm Paulin: vocals, guitar
Jim Differ: drums
Daryl Peterson: bass
Produced by Bob Morten, 1978
Recorded by Kurt Hagen, John Richardson at Thunder Sound, Toronto
Mastered by Alan Moy and ‘Cub’ Richardson at JAMF Toronto

Formed in Toronto by highs school friends Mike Swartz and Bob Walker in 1973 after folding the tent on their previous group Black Wheat. They recruited Swartz's younger brother Rob as the second guitarist, and with Walker handling bass, they added Rick Haberman on drums - and Lynx was born.

They made their way around the local circuit for the next year or so, while writing material on the side. Reviews of the shows were positive and the band's legion of fans steadily grew around the region. Steve Taylor, head of Starship Music Productions, caught their show one night and signed a deal with them. Armed with a demo tape they'd recorded at Mercy Brothers Studio in Elmira, Ontario, he landed them a contract with Quality Records in early '76.

While they were at Toronto's Phase One Studios, they augmented their sound by bringing in Tony Caputo on keyboards, a classically trained pianist from the Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music, and holder of a degree in Music Theory and Performance from Toronto's Humber Music College.

Their first album was well received but didn’t sell, nor did any singles get played on commercial radio. Sneak Attack, their second album, had high expectations but didn’t do any better. The band decided to call it quits but they owed Quality Records another album, so a third was made. Then they broke up.

Kenny Margolis is best known as the keyboard/accordion player for the popular and critically acclaimed rock band, Cracker. Lucky 7 was a side-project of Margolis and as far as I can tell, they only put out this one album. They were very popular in Canada, especially in Montreal where they wowed the crowd at the city’s Jazz Festival. Now Magazine in Toronto said of them: "No doubt about it, Lucky 7 is among the most fun, freewheeling live acts going."

FM basically existed from 1976 to 1996 and at one time featuring violinist Ben Mink. After appearing on the CBC TV variety show Who's New, FM were approached by the CBC to make an album, ultimately titled Black Noise, which the group presumed would be distributed in stores like a normal release. Produced by Robert David & JD Belanger, 2003
Mastered by Jon Van Wingerden, Audio Valley Recording Studio

Robert David was a little known singer-songwriter outside of Montreal who put out a few cassettes and a CD of his eclectic songs. What I like about his recorded work is that it’s raw, emotional and far reaching and certainly not very commercial. East of the Sun is maybe an exception to that.
