Hits compilation released in Canada January, 1966

"Because" was written with the intention of being the Dave Clark Five's fifth US single, but the band's label, Epic Records, was initially resistant, believing the ballad strayed too far from the hit-making, drum bashing formula that had proven so successful with the band's previous singles. In May 1964, the song was released in the UK as the B-side to "Can't You See That She's Mine".

Clark insisted that "Because" be released as an A-side in the US, and Epic eventually agreed. The single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number sixty in August, and peaked six weeks later at number three. "Because" became the band's fifth US single to sell more than one million copies. In Canada, the song reached number three on RPM magazine's chart. The Supremes recorded a version of it on the group's ‘A Bit of Liverpool’  tribute album (1964). The Ray Conniff Singers released the song as a single in 1972. And Julian Lennon recorded the song for the soundtrack to Dave Clark's musical ‘Time’  in 1986.

Sometimes thing go over my head without me realizing it. I guess it happens to us all. Wooden Ships is one such dilemma since I just found out that it was written by David Crosby and Stephen Still (for Crosby Stills and Nash’s first album) with the assistance of Paul Kantner from Jefferson Airplane. This explains why the song appears on Volunteers. And it’s most interesting to hear how The Airplane interpret the song as opposed to CSN.

He was the first Cree language performer to see significant radio airplay in Canada. Loon influenced other First Nations musicians, such as Lloyd Cheechoo and Kashtin, to sing in their own languages. Though a strict traditionalist who wore his hair long, Loon was also a seasoned road warrior, performing across Canada, the United States, and Europe. He approached things with a special joy, celebrating and promoting his Cree culture to all who would listen. Loon died at age 38 in 1986 after suffering a lengthy bout with cancer.

Ronald Eldon Sexsmith b. 8 January 1964 (57) St. Catharines

The very first time I listened to Carousel One, I could hear the distinct vocal imprint of the Kinks’ Ray Davies. Later I learned that Ron Sexsmith is a huge Kinks fan. I’ve know him for many, many years but didn’t realize until hearing Carousel One how much his style has changed over the years. From a gruff and groggy R&B style to a more melodic, dramatic one maturing with the passing of time. He just keeps on getting better and better.

From 1964 to 1967, Garrett played in the Toronto jug/string band, the Dirty Shames. It was during this period that Garrett took John Hammond Jr. to see Levon and the Hawks for the first time. The Hawks would later be recommended by Hammond to Bob Dylan.

After serving in other peoples’ bands (like Anne Murray, Maria Muldaur, Ian & Syvia’s Great Speckled Bird, Paul Butterfield’s Better Days), Garrett claimed: "I wanted to sing. I loved to sing, but there was no way I could do so being a hired gun for bands." He then signed with the small roots music label, Stony Plain Records and moved to Alberta and formed his band, The Eh Team.

There have been numerous bands who’ve called themselves Suckerpunch: in the UK, San Antonio, Texas, Michigan, Chicago and Florida, but the one we played today was from Toronto.

Still in high-school in the late 80’s, guitarist Christopher Dignan formed Suckerpunch with older brother Sean on drums and ex-Heatseekers bass player Cindy Beattie. With Christopher as the gyrating guitar swinging front man, Suckerpunch quickly became the must see band in town. They broke up in 1995 with the Dignan brothers joining Dodge Fiasco and later The Kensington Hillbillies.

The orchestra toured Great Britain in 1938 as the Ray Noble Orchestra before disbanding in 1942. Davidson organized another Dixieland big band and performed at Toronto's Palace Pier (1944-61).
