Fonfara's career as a professional musician commenced in 1963, when he started playing in the Toronto band, Lee Jackson & The Checkmates, which evolved into Jon and Lee & The Checkmates. When John and Lee & The Checkmates broke up in September 1967, Fonfara worked briefly with David Clayton-Thomas and then, during the months of November and December, 1967, toured and recorded with The Electric Flag, featuring Buddy Miles and Michael Bloomfield. Fonfara replaced keyboardist and founding Electric Flag member Barry Goldberg. He was then selected by producer Paul Rothchild as a member of the Elektra Records' hand-picked, "supergroup", Rhinoceros, in December 1967. Fonfara was the co-writer of the band's major hit, "Apricot Brandy", and recorded three albums with the group.

After Rhinoceros, Fonfara joined a band called Blackstone (1972) before becoming an indispensible member of Lou Reed’s band. In 1976, Fonfara was a member of controversial Toronto-based band Rough Trade, acting as keyboard player and arranger on their first album. He left the band at the end of 1977 in a dispute over money. After that he recorded with Foreigner. In the 1980s, Fonfara returned to Toronto, where he became a key member of the Canadian R&B band The Lincolns. He also played regularly with Toronto’s Downchild.

Arthur Fiedler (December 17, 1894 – July 10, 1979)

Composed in 1880 when Tchaikovsky was 40, he thought the overture was very noise, written without much love and probably not of much artistic value. The Cannons  were difficult to record: artillery fired in the open air sounds impressive, but when recorded sound like popguns so they used three shotguns loaded with black powder and were overdubbed (Fielder used earplugs). 1st Classical conductor to embrace the music of The Beatles

This punky hillbilly song originated with The Big Bopper who released it in Feb 1959, shortly before George Jones did a version of it. This one comes from Waylon’s first album, named after a Phoenix club he’d been playing in since 1961. The small first pressing quickly sold out so they started making larger runs. David LaFlamme explains their hit song White Bird:

“Where the 'White Bird' thing came from ... We were like caged birds in that attic. We had no money, no transportation, the weather was miserable. We were just barely getting by on a very small food allowance provided to us. It was quite an experience, but it was very creative in a way.”

She received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto in 1972. ‘The Guitar’ was her first album, recorded for Stompin’ Tom’s Boot Records label in 1974. As of 2018, she has recorded 26 studio albums and made a live recording from Tokyo.

Notes from the album: “The harmonics reflect the sound of morning bells, and the guitar ‘tremolo’ technique employs steadily repeated treble notes over a harmonic bass line to create the lyrical effects conjuring visions of a beautiful Iberian daybreak.”

The Four Deuces were an American rhythm and blues vocal quartet, formed in the mid-1950s in Salinas, California. The band was started by lead singer Luther McDaniel, and recorded several songs before they broke up in 1959. While active, the Four Deuces had moderate but short-lived popularity in 1956, mainly along the West Coast, mostly due to the frequent radio airplay of their hit song, "W-P-L-J." which obviously hit the ears of a young Francis Vincent Zappa. Zappa has conceded, admiringly, that he could not have written a song any more absurd. They only released three singles before disbanding.

This was the first Canadian bluegrass band to have a regular radio show, which was called ‘The Hometown Jamboree’ on CFCF Montreal. When I Die: Revolver Records RLPS 501
London ON
William Smith: keys, vocals
Ken Marco: electric guitar, vocals
Wayne Stone: drums
Steve Kennedy: tenor sax, harmonica, vocals
Carol Kaye: bass, acoustic guitar
Produced by Mort Ross & Doug Riley, 1969
Recorded by Terry Brown

The roots of the original Motherlode can be traced back to Toronto's Yonge St. club scene of the late '60s. Despite receiving rave reviews and loyal following, “The Soul Searchers” were on their last legs. Steve Kennedy and William Smith, who’s resume also included some time with David Clayton Thomas's bands, decided to go out on their own, and joined up with members of Grant Smith & The Power.

RPM Magazine, based out of Toronto, decided to declare them Canada's first 'supergroup' ... which was a bit prophetic as the original band split up only a couple of months later, with most members joining Dr Music. Because producer Mort Ross owned the band’s name, several editions of Motherlode tried to carry on the cause.

17. Painted Ship: I Told Those Little White Lies
(William Hay / Bob Rowden)
London) M-17351
Richmond BC
William "The Captain" Hay (vocal)
Bob Rowden (lead guitar)
Barry Rowden (drums)
Ken Wain (organ)
Gary Connor (bass)
Joe Conroy (guitar)
Produced by Douglas Hawthorne, 1966

They were initially called The Wee Beasties in 1965 but later changed the name to The Painted Ship (not to be confused with The Wee-Beasties punk rock band from Denton, Texas formed in 2000). This raises the point: who came first as according to all the data I’ve been able to collect, Painted Ship recorded first followed by the Beasties. Obviously there’s a mistake out there, somewhere, anywhere.

18. Emile Benoit: Skeleton Reel / Flying Reel
(Emile Benoit)
Emile’s Dream: Quay Records CS 7932
