Cindy Church b. Bible Hill NS, 1958

Coming out of Ian Tyson’s backing band the ‘Chinook Arch Riders’, the GWO put out one vinyl album and a couple of CDs which, of course, went under-appreciated in Canada, which In my opinion, was a heinous crime. Just a great album of western music. Here they capture their own take on Marty Robins’ Big Iron. Later Cindy Church moved to Toronto and joined the folk band ‘Quartet’, with Caitlin Hanford, Sylvia Tyson, and Gwen Swick. She also performs from time to time with ‘Lunch At Allen’s’ with Murray McLauchlan, Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas.

3.   The Pukka Orchestra: The Man In the Iron Glove
(Pukka Orchestra)
Dear Harry: PUKCD-100
Toronto ON
Graeme Williamson
Neil Chapman – guitar
Tony Duggan-Smith - guitar

Produced by Pukka Orchestra, 1992
Recorded at Enormous Sound Studios, Toronto by Tom Atom

Two Pukka Orchestra cuts this week as they explore two metals: Iron (for gloves) and that Gold Mine In The Sky. Based out of Toronto,

The Pukka Orchestra was formed in Toronto in 1979.  The band's name is derived from the Hindi word Pukka, which means "Genuine", "Authentic" or "First Class". The name was coined by Tony Duggan-Smith's grandfather who was the harbourmaster of Calcutta and later worked for Marconi. When Duggan-Smith told him he was playing music for a living his grandfather replied, "That's all very nice Tony, but don't bother with any mediocre bands, get yourself into a Pukka Orchestra". The band made frequent use of numerous guest musicians using the phrase, "Are you in the Pukka Orchestra? Why not, everyone else is."

4.   Carroll Baker: All Them Irons In The Fire (Will Get You Burned)
(C Baker / Don Grashey)
I’d Go Through It All Again: Gaiety Records G-007
Bridgewater NS
Carroll Baker: vocal
Produced by Don Grashey and Chuck Williams, 1974

Carroll Anne Baker b. March 4, 1949 Bridgewater NS

Songwriter George Petralia heard Baker sing and introduced her to producer Don Grashey. Her first single in 1970, "Mem-ries of Home". In 1973, Baker became pregnant and announced her intention to withdraw from music business. Grashey convinced her to continue, and the pair traveled to Nashville to record four songs. Her first top ten record came from that session, "Ten Little Fingers", a song about a little girl, written by Don Grashey; this song remains one of her most popular songs to this day.

Don Grashey aka Dominic Michael Guarasci b. Port Arthur, Ontario Nov 1, 1925 / d. Sept 12, 2005

In 1959, composer Chuck Williams heard Loretta Lynn perform at a backyard jam session held in a converted chicken coop in Vancouver, British Columbia and told his friend Grashey about it. Grashey believed she was 'terrific' and signed Lynn to Vancouver’s Zero Records on February 1, 1960. Grashey produced Lynn's first recording session which took place in Hollywood in March, 1960 and resulted in the hit single "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl." He went on to produce a lot of Central Canadian recording artists over the years on his own Gaiety Records label, both country and rock n’ roll.

They had a bit of success in the late 60s but it wasn’t until the early 70s that they scored some good hit songs. However personnel changes plunged them into difficulties resulting in the Rich Wamil and Copperpenny title to ‘Fuse’, their last album released in 1975.

Long John Silver was the second last Airplane album before the Airplane dissolved and reformatting in the Jefferson Starship.
