Today’s theme is album sides, a once-a-month special on 33.45.78. We’re going to start off the program with side Two of the album “Having A Wild Weekend” by the Dave Clark Five from 1965. After The Beatles broke onto the scene, the first real rivalry was not with the Rolling Stones. It was with the Dave Clark Five. They were the biggest band to rival The Beatles internationally. In 1965, their full length motion picture was released and this is from the sound track for it. Special mention for the late Denis Payton, on sax. Just listen to how the guy played – extremely under-rated.

Recorded at EMI Studios, London September 1967

I’ve really enjoyed listening to Selina Martins Disaster Fantasies album which was released on vinyl back in 2010. She can vacillate between scorching grunge and sentimental folkie ballads. In short, not an artist you can describe by listening to a song. You gotta have a larger picture. I had difficulty choosing between side one or side two for this feature, but you’re gonna get side two.

Selina Pauline Martin b. 1967

I Was Kaiser Bills Batman: Derem Records DE 16006 mono
UK
Noel Walker: whistling
Studio Musicians
Mike Sammes Singers+
Produced by Noel Walker 1967

The Creation of Noel Walker, there was no actual performer called ‘Whistling Jack Smith’. The name was a take-off on the name of the baritone singer of the 1920s called ‘Whispering’ Jack Smith. So credited to ‘Whistling’ Jack Smith, “I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman” rose up the UK singles charts. When it was to be featured on the ‘Top of the Pops’ BBC TV program, actor Coby Wells was used to mime the whistling, and later toured as the public face of Whistling Jack Smith. (Wells' real name was Billy Moeller; he was born in 1946 and was a brother of Tommy Moeller, lead vocalist, guitarist, and pianist with Unit 4 + 2).

The cover for the record features Wells wearing a Red British military jacket, spreading his arms and hands around a globe of the world. British enough to sell a lot of records.

RIP Douglas Trumbull
Douglas Hunt Trumbull b. April 8, 1942 Los Angeles / d. February 7, 2022 (79) Albany, NY

I don’t often honour camera operators or special effects guys on the show, but the light sequence and spectacular special effects the Douglas Trumbull created for Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, released in 1968 was like music for our eyes. Specifically, the stargate sequence was unlike anything ever filmed before. Kubrik picked the music for the film and I like Side Two a bit better. It begins with Aram Khatchaturian’s melancholy ballet suite depicting the feeling of being totally alone and alive. Followed by Atmospiheres by György Ligeti, the abridged version of the Blue Danube heard at the end of the film, and lastly, Also Sprach Zarathustra.

Side B

RIP Sandy Nelson
Sander Lloyd Nelson b. Dec 1, 1938 Santa Monica, CA / d. Feb14, 2022 (83) Las Vegas

I got my first drum kid when I was 13. That was when a song hit the Hit Parade called Teen Beat ’65 by drummer Sandy Nelson. I bought the album and before I knew it I had a dozen different albums of great grooving drum along songs that I would play to. He just passed away and for side  two of the program today, I’ll be interspersing his records around the next two sides. Let’s start with Nelson’s first big hit, Let There Be Drums, originally recorded in 1960 but heard here live from Las Vegas. Followed by Tequila, 1961

RIP Ian McDonald
b. 25 June 1946 Osterley UK / d. 9 February 2022 (75) New York City

Peter and Michael Giles were the perfected rhythm section without a band when they met guitar genius Robert Fripp. They called themselves Giles, Giles and Fripp and record two albums (but never played a gig) with the addition of sax, guitar and flutist Ian McDonald. Three of those four would become the original incarnation of King Crimson months later.

McDonald played a huge part on ‘In The Court of the Crimson King’ which went big really fast, but unsatisfied with the direction Fripp was going in, left the band with the Giles Brothers and recorded this incredible album. Side one is great! Stevie Windwood on the Keys in Turnham Green.

Sandy Nelson Plays Teen Beat: Imperial Records LP 12044
Los Angeles CA
Sandy Nelson: drums
Richard Podolor: guitar
Produced by Imperial Records Staff, 1960

While most drummers in the latter 1950s chose to play jazz, Sandy Nelson concentrated on making rock records. Beginning in 1959, he released Teen Beat followed by ‘Let There Be Drums’. His first California surf records were minimalistic: just drums and electric guitar, supplied by Richard Podolor.

RIP Dallas Good  (1973-2022)

A friend of mine, Paul Burton, lived next door to the Good Brothers family home on Boyle Drive  in Thornhill. Their band was known as James and the Good Brother back then. Dallas and Travis were the sons of Bruce Good of the Good Brothers. Their mother was Margaret Good, sister to Doug and Andrew Queen of Jughead.

The last concert I ever attended was at Massey Hall late November when The Sadies opened up for Buffy Ste. Marie. The Sadies were a touch rusty, though the way they played you wouldn’t have known it, having not played much due to the Covid. I had no idea that it would be the last time I would get to hear and enjoy the great music of the late Dallas Good who died of a rare heart condition.

Northern Passages was an excellent example of the Sadies variety. It was released on vinyl in 2017.

The Best Of The Beats: Imperial Records LP-C9224
Santa Monica CA
Sandy Nelson: drums
Rick Podolor: guitar

Produced by Rick Podolor, 1963

From the liner-notes:

“Since high fidelity recording includes a true reproduction of all sounds without discrimination or distortion the original recording was done on an Ampex 300 C Magnetic Tape Recorder at 15 IPS using Scotch tape. To effectively record the full frequency spectrum, Telefunken U-47 M microphones were used. Tape to disc transfer employed an automatic Scully lathe with heated stylus using a Grampion feedback cutter system. Disc recording utilizes the standard RIAA recording curve.”

7.   Sandy Nelson: Drum Party

Sandy Nelson Plays Teen Beat: Imperial Records LP 12044

Nelson attended high school with Jan Berry, Dean Torrence Phil Spector. Played drums for Spector on the Teddy Bears' number one hit To Know Him, Is To Love Him in 1958. Recorded his first hit, Teen Beat, in 1959, followed by his only solo top ten hit “Let There Be Drums” in 1961. In 1963 Sandy was involved in a car accident and lost a foot. He recovered and returned to performing the following year and went on to record 29 solo studio albums. He also played on Chipmunks songs

9.   Sandy Nelson: Bony Maronie  (Mono)
(Larry Williams)
Golden Hits: Imperial Records LP9202
Boulder City, NV
Sandy Nelson: drums
Richard Podolor: guitar
Steve Douglas: sax
Ernie Freeman: piano
Rene Hall: guitar

Produced by Richard Podolor, 1962

While most drummers in the latter 1950s chose to play jazz, Sandy Nelson concentrated on making rock records. Beginning in 1959, he released Teen Beat followed by ‘Let There Be Drums’. He cracked the dance market by releasing a few dozen albums of instrumental, drum heavy rock hits. Many aspiring young rock drummers, myself included, would put these records on and drum to them, learning how to swing.
