And Now for The Particulars:

Side 1

1.   Victor Holubowich & Royal-Lites: Tic-Toc Polka
(Trad arr by Victor Holubowich)
Their Instrumental Favourites: Heritage Records – HR-20
Edmonton AB
Victor Holubowich: accordion, Cord-O-Vox
Bill Rudkowski: dulcimer, bass
Joe Wasylenchuk: sax
Panko Chrunik: guitar, bass
Dan Martyniuk: drums
Produced by Victor Holubowich, circa 1970
Recorded by Joe Kozak at Recording Services, Edmonton

Victor Holubowich b. Myrnam AB November 30, 1943

Victor first got interested in playing thte accordion when he was twelve, and once he started playing it he knew that he was destined to be a musician.  In 1970, he  formed his own group which he called “Victor Holubowich and the Royal-Lites”.  Within a very short period of time they became quite popular and performed throughout Western Canada. Their popularity led them to the recording studio to record a number of albums of Ukrainian Music. Victor was most proud that his own tune, The “Feature Waltz” has gone around the world being played by many other excellent musicians. Holubowich ran The Royal-Lites polka band for decades out of Edmonton. He recorded Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ In the Wind’ as a polka!

2.   The Fabulous Thunderbirds: Wait On Time
(Kim Wilson)
Girls Go Wild: Chrysalis Records CHM 41250
Austin TX
Jimmy Vaughan: guitar
Kim Wilson: vocals, harmonica
Keith Ferguson: bass
Mike Buck: drums
Produced by Denny Bruce 1979
Recorded by Rob Sullivan at Sumet-Bernet Sound, Dallas, May 79

The album was released named as The Fabulous Thunderbirds but since the words “Girls Go Wild” appeared on the front cover, people assumed that was the title.

3.   Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band: Just Can’t Wait
(Minnie Hart / Bill Howard)
Tri-City Stomp: Duke of Erb Records WHRC 12-01
Kitchener ON
Minnie Heart: vocal, banjolin, violin, jug, kazoo, bass
Bill Howard: vocal, guitar, kazoo, washboard
Buck Thompson: bajitar, washboard, vocal
Willie Ames: cello, tenor guitar, vocal
John Smith: clarinet
Produced by Bill Howard & Minnie Heart 2012
Recorded at the Duke of Erb
Mixed by Matthew Knischewsky
Mastered by Harris Newman at Greymarket Mastering

I met these people up at Summerfolk in Owen Sound and they quickly put this album into my hands. Unlike most jugbands, they don’t cherry pick the typical jugband songs; they write their own material in the spirit of the them. They understand the concept, sound and times of the original Memphis based jugbands of the 1920s and 30s. While I’ve never asked, I’m certain that singer Minnie Hart took her jugband name from two of her faves: Memphis Minnie and Hattie Hart, both of whom were backed on disc by Will Shade’s Memphis Jug Band.

4.   Riley Puckett: Waitin’ For The Evenin’ Mail
(Puckett)
78 rpm single bw The Old Spinning Wheel: Bluebird Records B-5432-B
Dallas GA
Riley Puckett: guitar, vocals
Recorded 1934

George Riley Puckett b. May 7, 1894 Dallas, Georgia / d. July 13, 1946 East Point, GA (52)

Puckett was born in Dallas, Georgia. An incorrect treatment using lead acetate in his eyes during infancy left him blind. His vocalizing was a regular feature at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers Conventions. Newspaper reporters covering these events referred to him as the "Bald Mountain Caruso". In 1924, Puckett accompanied fiddler Gid Tanner to New York, where, on March 7 and 8, they recorded twelve songs and tunes for the Columbia Phonograph Company. They were the first country-music artists to record for Columbia. He was also a member of Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers with whom he recorded in the early 1930s. Puckett continued to record as a solo artist well into the 1940s, creating a discography of more than 200 records. He died of blood poisoning

5.   Jim Reeves: Waiting For A Train
(Jimmy Rodgers)
When The Evening Shadows Fall: RCA LSP-4073
Galloway, Texas
Jim Reeves: vocals
Produced by Chet Atkins, 1956
Compilation produced 1968
Recorded by Bill Porter in Nashville, Nov 13, 1956

James Travis Reeves b. Galloway TX Aug 20, 1923 / d. July 31, 1964 (40) Davidson County, TN

Jim Reeves died in the same plane crash as Patsy Cline. Known as "Gentleman Jim", his songs continued to chart for years after his death. He started playing baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals "farm" team during 1944 season as a right-handed pitcher. He played for the minor leagues for three years before severing his sciatic nerve while pitching, which ended his athletic career. Reeves began to work as a radio announcer and sang live between songs.  That’s what got him started in music. His first hit was with the song "Mexican Joe" in 1953, recorded for Abbott Records. Other hits followed, such as "Bimbo" which reached Number 1 on the U.S. Country Charts in 1954.

The next few years felt very uncomfortable for Reeves; he didn’t like the way he was singing and being recorded. He wanted to sing in a lower register with the mic touching his lips as he sang. Finally, in 1957, he recorded his way, much to the chagrin of the recording company. "Four Walls" not only scored Number 1 on the country music charts but scored Number 11 on the popular music charts as well. This recording marked his transition from novelty songs to serious country-pop music

6.   The Seaway Singers w Dee Higgins: Alone and Waiting by the Sea
(Snider)
The Seaway Singers: Point Records P) 299
London ON
Bruce Anthony: guitar, bass
Bill Salter: banjo
Tom Salter: guitar
Jim Francom: vocals
Dierdre ‘Dee’ Higgins: vocals
Produced 1967

I don’t know much about the Seaway Singers, except that their blonde bombshell lead vocalist, Dee Higgins, left the group a year after this album was made and had quite a successful solo career. She was the official hostess at the Ontario Pavilion for Expo ’67 in Montreal. They got together around 1963, singing folk songs in and around London Ontario where the various members were attending Western University. Higgins lives in Toronto and occasionally sings with Keith McKie (Kensington Market).

Bill  began playing the accordion at age 12. He and his wife, Mary, put the Interlake Polka Kings band together in 1964 and they became legendary for his grass roots Ukrainian music.
One of the best known polka bands in Western Canada were the Interlake Polka Kings, the core being a family band under the guidance of Bill and Mary Woloshyn. They performed across the Canadian prairies in various configurations for over 60 years.

9.   The Trews: Tired of Waiting
(C. MacDonald, Syperek, J-A. MacDonald, Dalton, Eric Paul)

Antigonish NS
Colin MacDonald - rhythm guitar, lead vocals
John-Angus MacDonald - lead guitar, backing vocals
Jack Syperek - bass guitar, backing vocals
Sean Dalton - drums
Produced by Gordie Johnson, 2004

This album, The Trews first, went gold in Canada and did respectably well in the US. The band started their career with the name One I'd Trouser, a line taken from a song in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. They changed their name to Trouser and eventually The Trews. The release of their first full-length CD House of Ill Fame followed in 2003. Produced by Big Sugar's Gordie Johnson, the album contained the 5 singles. Their big one, "Not Ready to Go", hit number one on Canadian rock radio and was the most played song of 2004. Since then they’ve released several studio albums, three live ones and a number of EPs. They eventually relocated to Hamilton ON.

10. The Kinks: Tired Of Waiting For You
(Ray Davies)
Kinda Kinks: Marble Arch Records mono - MALS 1100
London UK
Ray Davies: guitar, vocals
Dave Davies: guitar
Mick Avory: bass
Pete Quaife: drums
Rasa Davies: bg vocals
Produced by Shel Talmy
Recorded at Pye and IBC Studios, London, August and December 1964
Released 15 January 1965

Dave Davies: The recording went well but there was something missing and it was my raunchy guitar sound. Ray and I were worried that putting that heavy-sounding guitar on top of a ponderous song might ruin it. Luckily it enhanced the recording, giving it a more cutting, emotional edge. In my opinion 'Tired Of Waiting' was the perfect Pop record. It was a change of style for us, we got a bit posher! Our material started to get a bit more melodic after that.

His mother taught him both Irish and Scottish folk songs when he was a boy; later, he was influenced by the music of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. He joined the folk-pop group The Humblebums in 1969. After they disbanded in 1971, he recorded his first solo album, Can I Have My Money Back? After forming the band Steel Wheel he got into a contract dispute and wasn’t allowed to release any music until the City To City album (which went Platinum) came out in 1978.

Rafferty had a drinking problem that severely affected his career. He eventually succumbed to alcoholism after several years of living alone. A sad end to what could have been a cool story.

Produced by Bert Niosi
, 1974
Recorded by Peter Houston

Alexander Peter Chernywech, b Medicine Hat, Alta, 1 Nov 1932, d Mississauga, ON, 23 Aug 1989 (66)

Although he was a traditional Canadian fiddler, Cherny never forgot his Ukrainian roots. From the liner notes of this album, Al Cherny wrote:

“The Ukraine. Birthplace of my parents. Home to my relations: uncles, aunts, and grandmother (Babushka). I learned to play Ukrainian tunes as a child in Medicine Hat. Weddings and dances were the social life for a Ukrainian; tunes and instrumentals made up an important part of any function. Listening to them, I am sure you will all feel the sense of excitement and activity that is so characteristic of a Ukrainian function.”

Verxovena (Supreme) / Kolobushka (The Peddler’s Pack) The Kolobushka is a kind of dance. The dance originated in the Russian countryside and small towns, making its way into the middle and upper class. It was later suppressed and taken with immigrants to the new world. As a result, there are many versions surviving today. It survives as a popular Jewish dance today

Side 2

1.   Johnny Merenick & His String Jesters: Old Boy Polka

Allen Merenick, guitar, clarinet
Ted Merenick, bass
Danny Meremick, accordion, drums
Fred Demchuk, vocals
Produced circa 1970
Recorded at Krol Sound Enterprises, Edmonton

Waite! The next song isn’t about waiting, although it sort of is. It’s a song by Mike Waite of Mike’s Music on the Danforth and we had to wait 40 years for his sophomore album to appear. Waiting can be tough!

2.   Knights of the Mystic Eye: Future Blues
(Mike Waite)
Cosmic Top Secret: Eye To Ear Records - DZD 556
Toronto
Mike Waite: lead vocals, guitar, bass, mellotron guitar
Paul Greig: guitars, mellotron guitar, bg vocals, sitar
Produced by Waite & Grieg, 2022
Recorded at Tape Canaveral Studios and Riverside Sound, Toronto

I’ve known Mike Waite for a long time, having worked with him at the post office. He had a Sam The Record Man store at Broadview and Danforth which became Mike’s Music after the Sam’s chain collapsed. He began making music in the ‘60s with his friend Paul Grieg and in between now and then, played bass with Breathless with Nash The Slash, helped manage Nash’s next project, FM. Now into their seventies, he’s re-united with Paul Grieg and between them, they are the Knights of the Mystic Eyes.

3.   Rolling Stones: I Am Waiting

Brian Jones – dulcimer
Bill Wyman – bass
Charlie Watts – drums
Jack Nitzsche – tambourine
Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, 1966
Recorded by Dave Hassinger at RCA Studios, Hollywood 6–9 March 1966

This is interesting! I had this song going through my head thinking about this show, and for some twisted reason, thought it was a Kinks song. Checked out all my Kinks records and….. ahhhh, it’s the Stones! Listening to it thought, my wife thought it could have been a Kinks song. BTW, Aftermath is my absolutely favourite Stones’ album. I love every single song!

4.   Mamas & Papas: I Can’t Wait
(John Phillips)
Mamas & Papas: RCA Victor – D-50010

Tommy Tedesco: guitar
Larry Knectel: Organ, Piano
Produced by Lou Adler, 1966
Engineer Bones Howe

Eric Alper recently asked on Twitter: what’s a song that makes you really nostalgic? My answer was ‘Anything by the Mamas and Papas.’ They seemed to catch a page that helped define the sounds of the mid-60s as California became more than just the Beachboys backyard with scenes in LA and San Francisco blossoming. I Can’t Wait wasn’t one of their hit songs, but it could have been. It’s got that vibe.

5.   Velvet Underground & Nico: I’m Waiting For The Man

Lewis Allan Reed b. March 2, 1942 New York City / d. October 27, 2013 (71) East Hampton, NY

Lou Reed rerecorded this song for one of his solo albums in the mid-1970s but there’s nothing like the Velvet Underground’s sound, one that accompanied the Andy Warhol scene in New York at the time.

(Unknown)
Gay Songs of the Ukraine: Arc 549
Midhurst, ON
Victor Pasowisty, fiddle

(Trad)
Come All ye…and Sing With Anna McGoldrick: Bonus Records CL2
Castleblaney, Ireland
Anna McGoldrick: vocals
Others not mentioned
Produced by Anna McGoldrick, 1979

Anna was born in Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan which, for some unknown reason, is a town which has produced more than its fair share of Irish showband talent. She came to prominence on the Irish scene in 1968 when she sang a song in the 4th Annual Irish National Song Contest. She became a popular Irish star and was eventually sought out by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

"I was offered my 7th TV series with RTE for 1978, but I was also offered my first TV series with CBC in Canada and my husband, who was my manager, decided it might be a good plan to break new ground and so we accepted the 18 week TV series with CBC and that lead to three further TV series with CBC in Canada in the following 4 years." Anna has appeared on PBS television in the U.S.A. in her own variety specials, each March, since 1990. No stranger to radio, Anna also presented her own radio program each week, in the Canadian Maritimes. Anna McGoldrick has recorded seventeen albums of song and two comedy albums.

Claude Bradimore, the lead vocalist, was recruited to sing the songs of Hank Williams which resulted in two Arc albums of Williams material with the Golden Valley Boys backing him up.
