Los Angeles CA
Bruce Johnson: bg vocal
Terrry Melcher: lead vocal
Glen Campbell: guitar
Hal Blaine: drums
Ray Pohlman: bass
Produced by Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnson, 1963

"Hey Little Cobra" is a song released in 1963 by the Rip Chords about the Shelby Cobra. The song spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 4,[3] while reaching No. 5 on Canada's CHUM Chart.

The Rip-Chords were actually just two guys who loved singing together, called The Opposits. They came to the attention of Doris Day who owned a small record company and she got her son, Terry Melcher, working for Columbia, to sign these guys. Melcher called in guitarist Glen Campbell, drummer Hal Blaine and Ray Pholman on bass for this recording. They also featured former Beach Boy, Bruce Johnson on back ground vocals.

RIP Harry Bryan

Although we’ve only actually met once or twice, Harry Bryan and I were instant friends. We met in a restaurant in St. John’s with Wayne Tucker. Harry handed over a bunch of albums and said, ‘you might like to have these.’ Canadian rock albums from 1970. He also handed me a CD of his old band Cherri who also recorded at that time but never saw an album release.

I first met Harry online, on a folk music listserve. He was working at Co-Operator’s Insurance out of Guelph and was living up in Georgetown, Ontario. In 1996 he released a CD of his own songs called Long ‘Road To One’ so he sent me a copy. It had a lot of Northern Ontario in it and he loved touring up that way. We had Timmins in common.

After retiring from his job, the Bryan family decided to relocate to Ferryland, Newfoundland. As Mainlanders, folks from ‘away’, the Bryans fit in beautifully. Harry decided to start an internet radio station – Southern Shore Sounds – and said ‘Steve, I want 33.45.78 for Sundays.’ But it’s a real Ferryland based station that includes the whole community.

Harry died as Deputy Mayor of Ferryland.

Harry once told me basically why this album of Cherri’s was never released. All I can remember is that there was a lot of bull shit involved, of course. It’s from the studio tape that was ready for mastering but that stage was never done. I’ve tried livening the sound up a bit.

RIP Gary Brooker MBE
b. London UK 29 May 1945 / d. 19 February 2022 Surry UK (76)

His father Harry Brooker was a professional musician, playing pedal steel guitar with Felix Mendelssohn's Hawaiian Serenaders, and as a child Brooker learned to play piano, cornet, and trombone.

Brooker founded the Paramounts in 1962 with his guitarist friend, Robin Trower. The band gained respect within the burgeoning 1960s British R&B scene. The Rolling Stones, in particular, were Paramounts fans, sharing the stage with them several times in the early 1960s. In 1967, Brooker founded Procol Harum with his friend and lyricist, Keith Reid. They booked time in a recording studio and hired a few musicians and recorded Whiter Shade of Pale which took them to number one. That meant touring so they formally put a band together. I saw them perform several times in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s and they were always great to see. I chose a song from their third album, A Salty Dog, that features a wicked Robin Trower guitar solo.

Joseph Kubert: Rhythm guitar
Jim McCallister: Bass
Johnny "Bee" Badanjek – Drums
Produced 1966
Compilation Produced 1981
Mastered by Joe Brescio at Master Cutting Room

White Detroit sounded a lot like Black Detroit in the sixties, except for the vocals. That’s when black is black and white is white, most of the time. But to find your own voice in the middle of all that and to sound only like yourself is something few can do. Mitch Ryder was such a singer and his band was such a great band.

11. Jørgen Ingmann & His Guitar: Apache
(Jerry Lordon)
45 Single bw Echo Boogie: Atco Records 6184
Copenhagen DK
Jørgen Ingmann: all instruments
Produced 1961

Jørgen Ingmann Pedersen (26 April 1925: 21 March 2015) aged 89

He was influenced by American guitarist and recording studio pioneer Les Paul. In the mid-1950s he set up his own studio where he developed techniques of multi-tracking and distortion, using his own accompaniment on bass and drums, and began recording under the name Jørgen Ingmann & His Guitar. Ingmann's 1961 version of Apache (originally recorded by The Shadows) charted at #1 in Canada on the CHUM Chart

12. The Roches: The Angry Angry Man

Lee Shapiro: synclavier
Andy Schwartz: electric guitar
Produced by Edd Kalehoff and Howard Linderman, 1985
Recorded by Howard Linderman at Producers Recording Studio
Mixed by Howard Linderman at RPM Studio

The Roche sisters have the most amazing, off-key harmony vocals that have amazed countless fans, including the likes of Robert Fripp who produced one of their albums. Their song Married Men was a hit for Phoebe Snow in 1979. Suzzy’s daughter is the half-sister to Martha and Rufus Wainwright (with Kate McGarrigle). So the Roche and McGarrigle families seem to be inter-related.

13. Rare Bird: Iceberg
(Rare Bird)
Rare Bird: ABC Records ‎– CPLP-4514
UK
Graham Field: organ
David Kaffinetti: electric piano
Steve Gould: bass guitar, lead vocals
Mark Ashton: drums, tympani, backing vocals

Produced by John Anthony, 1970

Iceberg was originally written with a different title: “To the Memory of Two Brave Dogs”. The band, originally called Lunch, started recording in the fall of 1969. While they were not a singles oriented band, they recorded four good albums before calling it a day in 1974. They never made much of an impact in North America but were very popular in Europe. Note: no guitar player in the band.

14. Taste: What’s Going On?
(Rory Gallagher)
On The Boards: Polydor Records 184 366
Belfast NI
Rory Gallagher: vocals, guitar, harmonica, alto sax
John Wilson: drums
Richard McCracken: bass
Produced by Tony Colton, 1970
Recorded by Eddie Offard, London

What’s Going On? was released by Taste's manager and Polydor staff without Rory Gallagher's knowledge; going straight to No.1 in Germany, where the previous single "Born On The Wrong Side Of Time" had already been a hit, before Gallagher knew anything about it. By the time Gallagher had complained to Polydor the single had also entered the UK Top 10 and was unstoppable. After this single became a hit, Taste performed at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970, but Gallagher quit Polydor on the last day of the year and left Taste to work on solo projects

15. Sopwith Camel: Cellophane Woman
(W Seivers)
The Sopwith Camel: Kama Sutra Records KLPS 8060
San Francisco CA
Peter Kraemer, vocal, sax
Terry MacNeil and William "Truckaway" Sievers, guitars
Martin Beard, bass
Norman Mayell, drummer
Produced by Erik Jacobsen 1967
Recorded by Val Valentin

The team of Producer Erik Jacobsen (born May 19, 1940) and recording engineer Val Valentin worked with Tim Hardin, The Lovin' Spoonful and Norman Greenbaum just to name a few. Sopwith Camel only put out one ‘real’ album during their tenure and, until recently, I believed that this was the only song with Cellophane in its title.

16.   That Petrol Emotion: Cellophane
(Sean O’Neill)
End Of The Millennium Psychosis Blues: Virgin Records VR2550
Derry, Northern Ireland
Ciaran McLaughlin: drums, harmonica
Steve Mack: more stuff
Reamann O’Gormain: guitar
Damian O’Neill: string bass
Sean O’Neill: guitar
Produced by Roli Mosimann, 1988
Recorded by Brian Martin

A band based out of Derry in Northern Ireland featuring American vocalist, Steve Mack. They were active between 1984–1994, during which time They recorded five albums.

After moving to London in the mid-1980s to further their career, the fledgling band found singer Steve Mack (at the time, on a year out from his studies and working in a pizzeria in London) to complete their original lineup. They were political and outspoken, with their Irish members listing their names in their Irish language forms and looked at issues relating to the Irish Troubles. They were described by Rolling Stone magazine as "The Clash crossed with Creedence"

On the eve of the recording sessions for the third That Petrol Emotion album, “End of the Millennium Psychosis Blues”, bass player John O'Neill announced his imminent departure from the band. Although he stayed to record this album, the sessions were fraught with tension and foreboding. Guitarist Reamann O'Gorman has stated: "it was a complete bombshell. When I look back now, we should have thrown him out there and then and got on with the new recording ourselves. Instead we meekly accepted everything and he hung around for another three or four months. It was a toxic situation."

17. Brian Eno: Here Come The Warm Jets
(Brian Eno)
Here Come The Warm Jets: Editions EG ENO1

Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno b. May 15, 1948, Melton, Suffolk UK

1969 At the Winchester School of Art, Eno attended a lecture by Pete Townsend of The Who about the use of tape machines by non-musicians, citing the lecture as the moment he realized he could make music even though he was not a musician at that point. In school, he used a tape recorder as a musical instrument and experimented with his first, sometimes improvisational, bands Eno's professional career began in London, a member of glam/art rock band Roxy Music.

Collaborated with Phil Manzanera & Phil Collins before getting seriously into production
Created the Frippertronics idea with Robert Fripp on 1973 for LP No Pussyfooting
Created the Ambient Music series of LPs eg Plateau of Mirrors & Music for Airports
Came to Hamilton ON and worked w/ Daniel Lanois, teaching him some of his original production techniques

18. The Trashmen: A-Bone
 (Larry LaPole)
45 rpm single bw Bird Dance Beat: Apex Records (Canada) 76904
Minneapolis MN
Tony Anderson: lead guitar
Dal Winslow: guitar
Bob Reed: bass
Steve Wahrer: drums, lead vocals
Produced by George Garrett, 1964

There were two sides to The Trashmen: the Surfin’ Bird side and the Venture’s side and this one sort of straddles them both. It was The Bird Dance Beat, on the flip side of the band’s answer to their surprise hit, Surfin’ Bird. An A-Bone was a Ford Model A Tudor Sedan used for hot-rodding in the 1950s. The Shelby Cobra was a Ford built V-8 produced since 1962. Chevy’s answer to that was the Corvette Stingray.

Claude Russell Bridges b. April 2, 1942 Lawton, Ok / d. Nov 13, 2016 (aged 74) Mount Juliet, TN

Side one of this album features the typical keyboard stylings of Leon Russell while side two goes very strange with psychedelia. As a pianist, he played in his early years on albums by The Beach Boys. On his first album, Leon Russell, in 1970, the musicians included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. One of his biggest early fans, Elton John, said Russell was a "mentor" and an "inspiration". They recorded their album The Union in 2010, which earned them a Grammy nomination.

Russell produced and played and recorded with, among others  Jan and Dean, Gary Lewis, George Harrison, Delaney Bramlett, Freddy Cannon, Ringo Starr, Doris Day, Elton John, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, The Byrds, Barbra Streisand, The Ventures, Willie Nelson, Badfinger, the Tijuana Brass, Frank Sinatra, The Band, Bob Dylan, J. King was a long time Ottawa Valley based performer who recorded a dozen solo albums, was married to Marie King, also a well known Ottawa Valley singer from the French side. When he was just 14 he decided to have a career in music. His major influences were typical for his day: Hank Williams, Hank Snow and Wilf Carter. At age 16 he became a solo artist, beating out another Ottawa youngster named ‘Paul Anka’, in a talent show. Soon afterwards Bob joined on as a member of "Mac Beattie & The Ottawa Valley Melodiers". He put his first group, The Country Kings, together in Ottawa in 1954. Later, after an unsuccessful attempt to break into the US market, he formed The Happy Wanderers (which included the talented fiddler Ward Allen). He eventually got married to a popular Quebecois country music entertainer, Marie King, and played in her band after his recording days were done. He died of lung cancer at the age of 55. He left behind a legacy of about a dozen of his own albums as well as several recorded by Marie.

Peter Duffin, drums
Peter MacGibbon, bass
Graydon Nichols, guitar
Jim Ediger, fiddle

Produced by John Switzer & Andrew Cash, 1988
Mixed by Joe Primeau
Mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk, New York

One of the early songs written by Charlie Angus. Originally performed by the Grievous Angels during their formative stage at the Spadina Hotel, circa 1987, but never properly recorded by them. This version, by Andrew Cash, was the basis for Charlie’s first big royalty cheque! It’s a dark, foreboding story of a small town kid who came to Toronto during the punk days and never went home alive. The recording features drummer Peter Duffin who, along with Cash and Angus were the mainstays behind proto-punk band L’etranger.

Andrew Cash the distinction of being one of two members of the same punk band to get elected into the Parliament of Canada. (The other being Charlie (Chuck) Angus). You can break their L’Etranger records but you’ll never beat the ‘elected’ one!

I’ve been a David Celia fan since hearing his first CD. Every release since then has been a treat for my ears, music just the way that I like it. He’s just sent me promo material for his latest project, an album recorded with his wife, Marla. While it’s going to be released August, the LPs won’t be ready until the fall. I’ll do a preview for it on the program in a few weeks. But for now, we’ll just settle for his 2015 vinyl release of Double Mind.

After the 2015 release of The Violent World of Bad Breed, Now Magazine stated: “It’s an incredible thing to be surprised by a band in 2015. Genre tags, band names and cover art have taken away a lot of the guesswork. Then there are locals Bad Breed, whose seven-track debut keeps listeners on their toes and is more swanky, cabaret-influenced rock and soul than the death metal their name suggests.” Last year the band released their second LP which I will get to in a few weeks time.
