A supremely beautiful song out of the very irregular head of Syd Barrett for his solo work after being sacked by Pink Floyd. But isn’t that two Floyds backing him up and producing it?

Allan Baekeland b. Calgary November 6, 1959 / d. May 23 (60) Calgary

I became friends with Allan in 1988 when we were doing back-to-back radio shows here at CIUT. He did a great country show. He met his wife, Jen, here at CIUT too; she was also a station radio host. Later, they married and moved back to Calgary, where  Allan was from. He immediately got a show at the University radio station he helped found, CJSW.

As a member of Lost & Profound, Allen was a part of The Moose Records acts which included The Grievous Angels, Cajun Ramblers, Rheostatics, Big Smoke, Bob Snider, The Celtic Gales, Polka Dogs, Lazy Grace and The Bookmen. This excellent track about beer commercials was included on a Moose compilation CD released by Polygram.

(Wayne Manning / Russ Hicks)
Naturally: Harmony Records HE 90094
Elmira ON
Larry Mercy: guitar, vocal
Ray Mercey: bass, vocal
Lloyd Mercy: drums, vocal
Produced 1972

This album is a classic case of not telling us anything on the cover except the group’s name, record logo, the songs and times. No musician’s names, no production credits. All they seem to care about is who drinks their beers when they’re gone!

Recorded by Bob Doidge with John Oliviera & Mark Howard at Grant Avenue Studios, Hamilton
Mastered by George Graves at Lacquer Channel, Toronto
Suits by Kurt Swinghammer

On cover it states that “Home Taping Sucks. Please Be Cool.” That was the great fear in the music industry in the 1980s: criminals with fingers on the record button of their tape recorders, dubbing their records to listen on their Walkman’s or in their cars which was completely illegal.  So the industry went on the offensive and offended an entire generation of music lovers who soon discovered mp3s.

14. Keith MacKay: A Six Pack To Go
(Hank Thompson)
Through Those Swinging Doors: Arc Records 715
Sault Ste Marie ON
Keith MacKay: lead guitar, vocal
Others not listed
Produced by Ben Weatherby, 1966

Very little is publicly known about this guy. He was from The Soo where he started playing music with his brother Jim MacKay in a band called Fred Kent and The Northernaires. Eventually the brothers formed a duo (Jim on bass) and recorded an album for Arc called Bye Bye Love in 1964. After moving to southern Ontario they joined forces with Gary Buck. Keith MacKay was a featured performer on The Gary Buck TV Show out of Kitchener. It is believed (by me) that Gary Buck & The Broncos backed Keith up on this record as they did on the MacKay Brothers.

15. Whistling Jack Smith: I Was Kaiser Bills Batman
(Roger Greenway / Roger Cook)
I Was Kaiser Bills Batman: Derem Records DE 16006 mono
UK
Noel Walker: whistling
Studio Musicians
Mike Sammes Singers
Produced by Noel Walker, 1967

The Creation of Noel Walker, there was no actual performer called ‘Whistling Jack Smith’. The name was a take-off on the name of the baritone singer of the 1920s called ‘Whispering’
Jack Smith. So credited to ‘Whistling’ Jack Smith, “I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman” rose up the UK singles charts. When it was to be featured on the ‘Top of the Pops’ BBC TV program, actor Coby Wells was used to mime the whistling, and later toured as the public face of Whistling Jack Smith. (Wells' real name was Billy Moeller; he was born in 1946 and was a brother of Tommy Moeller, lead vocalist, guitarist, and pianist with Unit 4 + 2).

The cover for the record features Wells wearing a Red British military jacket, spreading his arms and hands around a globe of the world. British enough to sell a lot of records.

16. Ernest Tubb: Bubbles In My Beer
(Bob Wills / Tommy Duncan / Cindy Walker)

Nicknamed ‘The Texas Troubadour’

When I first started going to beer parlours, drafts cost 20 cents a glass. They were flat, draft beers. You had a salt shaker on the table and you got bubbles in your beer when you shook some in.

3.   The Kinks: Alcohol
(Ray Davies)
Muswell Hillbillies: RCA Victor – LSP-4644
London
Ray Davies – lead vocals, acoustic guitar, resonator guitar
Dave Davies – lead guitar, slide guitar, banjo, backing vocals
John Dalton – bass guitar, backing vocals
Mick Avory – drums, percussion
John Gosling – piano (acoustic and electric), Hammond organ, accordion.
Produced by Ray Davies, 1971
Recorded at Morgan Studios by Mike Bobak, Roger Quested

On stage, during the drunkard's lines "Oh demon alcohol," Davies would sometimes spray beer on the front row of the audience, something he did for the first time in Montreal, Canada, on February 5, 1970. He did this because the audience was unresponsive (and apparently stoned) but instead of taking it as an insult they enjoyed it. This led to the performance of the song becoming more theatrical, and with the audiences turning up ready for the shower.

His stage patter appears spontaneous: otherwise one might guess that it was co-scripted by Woody Allen and the Marquis de Sade. His band, the Continental Drift, consisted of Hall's long time accomplice, Juno nominated producer Tony Quarrington along with the late the Governor General Award-winning author of 'Whale Music' Paul Quarrington (bass) and Martin Worthy (drums).

Keith Moon wrote a couple of song, Daltry wrote one and John Entwistle another two. The rest were by Pete Townsend. Both of Entwistle’s songs were fantastic: Boris The Spider and this one, Whiskey Man. Originally a French Horn player, Entwistle often overdubbed it on several early Who cuts.
