Recorded at RCAs Toronto Studio by Craig Richardson & Alan Moy

Roy Absalom Payne b. April 3, 1939 - Trout River,  Newfoundland

There’s a lot of urban myths associated with Roy Payne. One
of them claims that during a recording session at RCA, he flipped out for
some reason, picked up an amp and tossed it through the glass into the production
booth which, apparently, ended his relationship with RCA.

  Posties

Formed in London in 1963, they took their name from
Willie Dixon song. They started out as another R&B band who had some
mediocre singles released before turning psychedelic in 1966. Dissatisfied
with their label who were very dissatisfied with them, they recorded this,
their third album to fulfill their contract obligations. This lead to infighting
within the band and a few members left a few months later.

  (PF Sloan / Steve Barri)
45 Single: Imperial Records IM 66159

  Johnny Rivers: guitar, vocals
  Joe Osborn: bass
  PF Sloan: guitar
  Mickey Jones: drums
  Produced by Lou Addler, 1966
Recorded live at the Whisky a Go Go, Los Angeles CA

When the popular British TV series Danger Man (starring
Patrick McGoohan) was shipped to America, they wanted a new theme song which
Sloan and Berri wrote and demo'd (as Danger Man). When the Americans wanted
a name change (to Secret Agent Man), they changed the title and got Johnny
Rivers to perform it. He did it as a 15 second intro for the series. However,
audience demand sent Rivers back to Sloan and Barri for a re-write and the
song was recorded for general release. As usual, Rivers did most of his recordings
live, off the stage at the Whiskey A Go Go in LA.

My copy was purchased from a little mom and pop record shop called Collis
Camera Centre in the Newtwonbrook Plaza, a small strip mall at Yonge and
Cummer streets in Willowdale not far from my junior high school, RJ Lang
when I was in grade 8. Their phone number was 416-223-1111.

In 2009, Bob Dylan told The Huffington Post that Prine
was one of his favorite writers, stating "Prine's stuff is pure Proustian
existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful
songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene.
'Sam Stone' featuring the wonderfully evocative line: 'There’s a hole in
daddy's arm where all the money goes, and Jesus Christ died for nothing I
suppose.' All that stuff about 'Sam Stone', the soldier junkie daddy, and
'Donald and Lydia', where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but
Prine could write like that."

everybody! Bonny Raitt, Carly Simon, Carl Perkins, 10,000 Maniacs, Joan Baez

So I found this album in the early 1990s by a Canadian
guy who had a song about mining. Other than that, I didn't know much about
him. His name was Glen Reid and he recorded for Stompin' Tom's Boot Records
label. So I took it in and played it on my show one night. Rick Fielding,
who just arrived for his Acoustic Workshop show popped into the booth and
said: "Steve, Glen Reid would be tickled to know that you played him on the
radio." Rick new Glen personally. This song is from a true experience up
in Creighton Mine, just north of Sudbury, now an official ghost town. Being
the deepest nickel mine in Canada, the mine is now used as the Sudbury Neutrino
Observatory.

After the breakup of the original Animals band
in 1966, Eric Burden put this new Animals band together and this was, in
my opinion, the coolest song they put out. Originally released in two sections,
one on each side of the single. Here’s a version that I spliced together.

  Produced by Billy Sherrill, 1977

  Donald Eugene Lytle b. May 31, 1938 Greenfield, Ohio / d. February 19, 2003 (64) Nashville

He achieved his greatest success in the 1970s
as a force in country music's anti-Nashville "outlaw movement" popularized
by artists Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver,
and Merle Haggard. In the 1980s, his music career slowed due to drug, alcohol
and legal problems. He served a prison sentence in the early 1990s and his
declining health effectively ended his career in early 2000. Take This Job
and Shove It was, by far, his biggest hit song.
