They purchased a couple of Revox tape machines and began experimenting. They eventually took over the basement of their mother’s house on Grant Avenue in Hamilton, offering their services to help pay for their addiction. A lot of multi-tracking, funky grooves went into making this one. The Lanois brothers were continually expanding into new and interesting sounds, getting more and more experienced by the variety of styles of music they produced.

Ben Mink is one of few people to ever share a songwriting credit with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In 1997 Mink and k.d. lang were credited as songwriters on the Stones single "Anybody Seen My Baby". Special thanks to Bob and Dan Lanois on the cover

Brian Eno came into Lanois’ life after Toronto based producer, Bill Bryans, sent a recording that Lanois had just completed to New York. Eno heard it and loved the sonic and looked Lanois up, met him and decided to record with him at Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton. This lead to a growing friendship and partnership as it brought Dan’s work out to the rest of the world via ambient music. It also lead to producing U2 and Bob Dylan. He wrote:

“I loved working with Eno. He came in like a breath of fresh air, like some sort of redemption after many years of laboring through bill-paying projects. Brian’s work did not accommodate the expectations of pop music; it was something timeless. Finally I felt that my work had relevance. Eno was about to be my teacher – not of music, not of the recording process, but my teacher of dedication and belief. Choose your passionand enter the arena! One note of Harold Budd’s piano crushed the back of years of struggle and disappointment. I felt I was on my way

Val Valentin was a recording engineer with six decades of work experience in the music industry. Much of his early work was done for MGM and Verve Records. Valentin's earliest known engineering credits date from around 1951, when he was credited on records released by MGM. He was the Director of Engineering for MGM and Verve Records beginning in 1963 in New York City. He began his career making recordings he engineered at MGM during the last two years of Hank Williams' life.

He began recording jazz musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Buddy Rich, working with world class producers like Norman Granz. But unlike most of his peers, Valentin, who worked quietly and efficiently, was able to jump into the pop music world effortlessly, working on both sided of the Atlantic. He was the Engineer of choice for so many producers.

The engineer’s job was to not only run the consol and tape machines, knowing them inside and out, he was also in charge of miking and getting the right sounds out of a session. As one of the best sound engineers of his day, the man went completely under the radar, just doing his job! His ability to go far beyond the limits of three track pop records is demonstrated in the vast array of musicians and artists who dealt with a Val Valentin recording session. While the producers always get the nod for the success of a recording project, the writing’s on the records as Val Valentin’s name is forever enshrined as the man who made the sound.

Janis Eddy Fink b. New York City, April 7, 1951

14 yrs old!!!
At the age of 12, she wrote her first song, "Hair of Spun Gold." At the age of 14, Ian wrote and recorded her first hit single, "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)", about an interracial romance forbidden by a girl's mother and frowned upon by her peers and teachers. Produced by George "Shadow" Morton and released three times from 1965 to 1967. The song's theme of interracial relationships was considered taboo by some radio stations, who withdrew or banned it from their playlists accordingly. In her 2008 autobiography Society's Child, Ian recalls receiving hate mail and death threats as a response to the song.

Chuck Beal. guitar
Produced by Rick Shorter, 1967

Released July 1, 1967

The first album by The Paupers, Magic People, was really like two different albums! Side one is this amazing amalgam of psychedelic rock where every song is a perfect addition to the set while side two seems more like a random collection of songs that don’t hold together. This song is from the first side, 3rd song. After freaking out on drugs at the Monterey Pop Festival, bassist Denny Gerrard was replaced. He later showed up playing in the McKenna Mendelson Mainline and is heard on the bootleg McKenna Mendelson Blues (1969) on Paragon Records by John Irvine, the same guy that Stompin’ Tom claimed screwed him (for his Rebel Records releases).

Although Absolutely Free was the first Mothers album I listened to (I bought Freak Out a couple of weeks later), it was a stunner. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! There was nothing else like it! And taking the piss out of The Supremes, The Beach Boys, lizard lounge music, rock-operas (and The Beatles on their next album, We’re Only In It For The Money), it was an archaic road that began with Plastic People and followed into the Duke of Prunes and Call Any Vegetable on side one. Still one of the best albums in my collection; I love it!

Nico (who went on to perform and record with the Velvet Underground) was known for her acting in Fellini’s La Doce Vita and was wooed by Andy Warholl to play a part in his 1966 film, Chelsea Girl. “these Days” was later used in the film The Royal Tenenbaums. Nico had this to say about the album:

“I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute.” The producer, Tom Wilson, would later work with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.
