This Vancouver band started out in the later part of the 1960s as a joke, with only one guy who could actually play. Over the next year they put together a real band and released One Ring Jane as a single in the US but it wasn’t promoted. That was when they formed their own Duck Records and recorded their first album featuring a re-recorded version of One Ring Jane. Bonded with the San Francisco music scene, the album did rather well considering it didn’t get much airplay. They went on to tour with the Yardbirds, Alice Cooper, opened for Cream and Deep Purple before calling it quits in the early 1970s.

Produced by Gregory Childs, 2020
Recorded by Steve Aylward at Frederick House Audio
Mastered by Phil Demetro at Lacquer Channel, Toronto

Toronto’s Gregory Childs claimed in an interview: “As a group we’re all drawn to raw storytelling. While we respect the pop elements of both classic and contemporary country we want our songs to feel like the mics just happened to be there, with the imperfections, throat pulls and chair squeaks included. We definitely aren’t perfect and we like it that way.”

This song was recorded for the film “Road House”, thus by a different producer than the rest of the LP.

Rheal Lanthier: lead guitar, vocals
The Ghetto: lead guitar, slide guitar, vocals
Jozef Chirowski: piano, organ, vocals

Recorded Terry Brown at Toronto Sounds Studios

This was the first ‘Crowbar’ release, the year after ‘Official Music’ with King Biscuit Boy. Steve Kennedy (of Motherlode) played the horns on this cut. Recording engineer Terry Brown would later make his mark recording Rush albums. I remember seeing Rush open for Motherlode (circa 1972) at the Midland (Ontario) Arena.

20. Very Lynn: We’ll Meet Again
(Ross Parker / Hughie Charles)
78 single bw Later On: Decca – F.7268
London
First Produced, 1939

Vera Margaret Welch b. 20 March 1917 East Ham, Essex UK / d. 18 June 2020 (103) Ditchling, East Sussex

Dame Vera Lynn began performing publicly at the age of seven and used her maternal grandmother's maiden name "Lynn" as her stage name.

Her first radio appearance took place in 1935 and has a Toronto / Beatles connection. Ray Sonin was a CFRB Radio broadcaster here in Toronto after emigrating from England in 1957. He did a show called ‘Calling All Britons’ and is credited as being the first North American DJ to air a Beatles recording – Love Me Do in 1962, before the song was released by Capitol Records of Canada the following February.

Ray had been a Melody Maker journalist in the 1930s and as such, is credited with having ‘discovered’ Very Lynn. According to Piers Hemmingsen’s fabulous book, The Beatles in Canada, “Ray was the person who got Very Lynn started with her first radio broadcast at BBC, in 1935. In those days, when music shows were broadcast live, band leader Joe Loss was rehearsing his orchestra shortly before going on air. His female vocalist had not turned up and Joe was becoming frantic as his ‘air time’ approached. At the time, Ray was a BBC scriptwriter and happened to be working late in the studio. When he heard of Joe’s dilemma, he told him there wss a young lady singing at a pub down the street who knew Joe’s repertoire. Joe said he couldn’t put an unknown on radio but Ray, who was recognized as a pop music expert, insisted that she would not let him down. Joe finally agreed so Ray headed off to bring Very Lynn back to the studio” to do the show.

Trying to be a bit more commercial and looking for some kind of a hit, Beefheart used successful hit makers to produce the album with him. The original American release was in a specially-produced clear plastic sleeve. The title Clear Spot was embossed on the front flap, with the record clearly visible inside without a liner. The original concept was for the disc to be of clear vinyl, but this was abandoned due to financial constraints

NYC
Bob Dylan: vocal, harmonica, guitar
William E Lee: bass guitar
Produced by Tom Wilson, 1965
Recorded January 15, 1965 at Columbia Recording Studios, NYC

Dylan wrote the song in January, 1965 as he was preparing to record Bringing It All Back Home, recording it the same day as he recorded "Mr. Tambourine Man". Typical of Dylan, he wanted to record the song before he became too familiar with it.

"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" has been covered by a variety of artists, including Joan Baez, Bryan Ferry, the Seldom Scene, Them (also by Van Morrison as a solo artist), the Byrds, the Animals, the Chocolate Watchband,  Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Falco, the 13th Floor Elevators, the Grateful Dead,  Hugh Masekela, Echo and the Bunnymen and Bad Religion. The Byrds recorded the song twice in 1965 as a possible follow up single to "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "All I Really Want to Do", but neither recording was released. The Byrds did release a 1969 recording of the song on their Ballad of Easy Rider album.

Utilizing the rich resources of their mixed marriage, Dave and Josie Deighton blended their British and Indonesian / Dutch heritage with their children. All good players! They grew up mostly in Yorkshire and were favoutes of Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson (who wrote the liner notes).

Acoustic Music to Suit Most Occasions, released in 1988, was named National Public Radio's “record of the year”.

Jaydee Maness: steel

Produced by Gary Usher, 1968
Recorded by Roy Halee & Charlie Bragg

Cindy Walker 1918-2006

Only two original Byrds left! This amazing country album was recorded after drummer Mike Clark & guitarist David Crosby had just left the band, replaced by Kevin Kelly & Gram Parsons. Bass player Chris Hillman would leave the band shortly to form the Flying Burrito Brothers with Mike Clark and Gram Parsons. This was the most ground breaking of rock albums which penetrated deeply into country music, hated by Nashvillites and poopooed by rockers who thought it was crap.

BB King: guitar, vocal
Gary Wright: electric piano
The Mystery Shadow: organ

Jim Keltner: drums
Produced by Ed Michel and Joe Zagarino, 1971
Recorded by Joe Zagarino at Olympic and Command
Studios, London; The Village Recorder and The
Record Plant, LA; The Hit Factory, NYC

This was from one of those ‘bring a bluesman to England and record him with British blues stars’ albums. Howlin’ Wolf also made one. So did Sonny Boy Williamson and Eddy Boyd. Wolf hated his London album; Ringo Starr walked out of the studio and didn’t come back. So is the album any good? Well let’s put it this way: there are a lot of BB King albums out there so there’s really no need to listen to a bunch (the list is a mile long) of songs backed by white blues rockers. These were crass albums to sell records and nothing more.

11. Muggsy Spanier & His Dixieland Band: The Blue Room
(Richard Rogers / Lorenz Hart)
Muggsy Spanier & His Dixieland Band: Mercury Wing Records – MGW 12165
New Orleans LA
Muggsy Spanier: Trumpet

12. Beatles: Blue Jay Way
(George Harrison)
Magical Mystery Tour: SMAL 2835
Liverpool
George Harrison – lead vocals, Hammond organ, backing vocal
John Lennon – backing vocal, Hammond organ[4][60]
Paul McCartney – backing vocal, bass guitar
Ringo Starr – drums, tambourine
Unnamed session musician – cello
Produced by George Martin, 1967
Recorded at EMI Studios, London Sept / Oct 1967

This was different! The song was named after a street in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles where Harrison stayed in August 1967. The song features only western instruments capturing the sounds of India nicely. The Beatles were just coming out of their psychedelic period and used just about every contraption Abby Road studios had to offer to colour up the sound. Such studio overkill was also used on Strawberry Fields and I Am A Walrus, recorded that same year.

13. Crystal Gale: Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue
(Richard Leigh)
45 single bw All I Wanna Do in Life: United Artists
Wabash IN
Crystal Gale: vocal
Hargus "Pig" Robbins: piano
Charles Cochran: Wurlitzer
Produced by Allen Reynolds 1977
Recorded at Jack's Tracks in Nashville

Crystal Gayle (born Brenda Gail Webb; January 9, 1951 Paintsville, Kentucky) is the youngest sister of Country star Loretta Lynn (b. 1932). Gayle became the first female artist in country music history to reach platinum sales, with her 1977 album We Must Believe in Magic. This song is perfect in every way: great writing, great production, great performance, great singing, great arrangement, and mood. Very inviting, like brown eyes singing in the rain.

14. Bonzo Dog Band: Can Blue Men Sing The Whites
(Vivian Stanshall)
Urban Spaceman: Imperial Records 12432
London UK
Rodney Slater: sax
Roger Spear: sax, guitar
Vivian Stanshall: vocal, guitar, sax
Neil Innis: guitar, keys
Legs Larry Smith: drums
Produced by Gus Dudgeon and Gerry Bron, 1968

The 1968 album ‘Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse’ was released as Urban Spaceman in the US and Canada by The Bonzo Dog Band. The phrase "the doughnut in granny's greenhouse" is obscure British slang for the lavatory.

Originally called The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, the Bonzos came to the public attention through a 1968 ITV comedy show, Do Not Adjust Your Set. The band was officially formed on 25 September 1962 after several members bonded after listening to the Sonny Liston / Floyd Patterson championship boxing match. Their hit song, I’m The Urban Spaceman, was co-produced by Gus Dudgeon and Paul McCartney.

Recorded Radio Recorders Studio 1, Hollywood September, 1956

Elvis Aron Presley b. Tupelo Mississippi Jan 8, 1935 / d. Aug 15, 1977 (42) Memphis

"When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again" is a song written by Wiley Walker and Gene Sullivan in 1940. They first recorded it in 1941. Wella wella Elvis sang this on his last appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show Jan 6, 1957 before around 50 million people. To me it’s the quintessential ‘Elvis’ sound.
