And Now for The Particulars:

Side A

1.   Ed Dolan et ses Fantaisistes: Raunchy
(Bill Justis / Sidney Manker)
Cours De Danse: TC Maximum – TCM 988
Montreal Quebec
Ed Dolan: sax
Mario Dolan: sax
Maurice Pinard: bass
Claude Therrian: drums
Serge Moreau: piano
Produced by Franco Disque, 1971
Recorded by Michel Éthier at Studio Andre Perry Ltd in Montreal

The song was released as a single in September 23, 1957 by Bill Justis, one of first to use the twangy lead guitar effect.  In 1958 a then fourteen-year-old George Harrison performed the song to John Lennon and Paul McCartney on the top deck of a bus, and was so note-perfect Lennon decided to let him into his band, the Quarrymen. Faintaisistes basically means Whimsicals. They were based in Montreal and released two albums of pop instrumental dance tracks.

2.   John Prine: The Speed Of The Sound of Loneliness
(John Prine)

Recorded by Jack Grochmal, Mark Miller, Mark Howard & Jim Rooney at Jack Clements at The Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa
Remixed by Rick Alder. Mastered by Denny Purcell at Georgetown Mastering, Nashville

Just one of the many amazing songs with a hook, so good that none of us fish can ignore the cunning observations of John Prine. This time from his mid-career just prior to the CD/internet boom of the ‘90s.

3.   The Grateful Dead: New Speedway Boogie
(Garcia / Lesh / Hunter)

Mickey Hart: drums, percussion
Produced by Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor, Grateful Dead - 1970
Recorded by Alembic at Pacific High Recording Studio, San Francisco

For those who regularly listen to my show, it’s quite obvious that I’m partial to this song. Just an excellent groove of the best there ever was at acid rock.

Cockell was the first Canadian to bring a Moog synthesizer home. As a member of Toronto’s legendary folk-rock band Kensington Market in 1968, he became the first dedicated Moog player who played live with a rock band. After the dissolution of the band, Cockell formed Syrinx who recorded two great albums for the brand new True North Records label, of jazzy electronica featuring sax and hand drums playing around Cockell’s Moog compositions. They even had a charted hit song with Tillicum, used as the intro to CTV’s futuristic show ‘Here Come The Seventies’. Syrinx lasted until 1972 and Hearbeat was Cockell’s follow up, now as a solo artist with guest performers, including Syrinx.

After three good selling albums and several hit songs, Deep Purple decided to re-invent themselves. After hearing what Led Zeppelin were doing, they decided to replace their lead vocalist and bass player and Deep Purple In Rock was the result; one of their best-selling albums world-wide. It was a terrible thing to have to do but we’re all better off for it; we all bear guilt for loving Deep Purple In Rock so much.

They later moved to New York before going to California and breaking up. In the interim, three of the Sparrow evolved into Steppenwolf. Bonfire then embarked on a solo career, while his brother Jerry became the drummer for Steppenwolf who recorded some of Edmonton’s songs and had a huge hit with this one. After leaving the band, he often collaborated with Kim Fowley, co-writing and recording on the recordings of Fowley.

On 22 June 2015, Bonfire was awarded the Cultural Impact Award by SOCAN at the 2015 SOCAN Awards in Toronto for the song "Born to be Wild"

Harrison recorded the instrumental track for "The Inner Light" in Bombay in January 1968, during the sessions for his Wonderwall Music soundtrack album. It is the only Beatles studio recording to be made outside Europe. The Beatles' only contribution came in from John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s backing vocals over the song's final line. Ringo is excluded. So was it really a Beatles’ song? It was the first Harrison composition to appear on a Beatles single.
