Dave Clark: drums
Joan Besen: Wukrlitzer
David Headon: bass
Tim Jackson, Liz Abbot: bg vocals
Produced by David Celia, 2015
Mastered by Andy Magoffin at The House of Miracles

In 1989, Celia was a member of a band called “Tarnished Gallahad”. They toured Ontario and Manitoba until they disbanded in 1996. That’s when Celia met guitarist and songwriter Mark Stewartson and formed the band Roundhouse. Invisible Inc. was then formed soon after and released a CD entitled Poor Folks Welcome (2000). Invisible Inc. played clubs in southern Ontario for several years and also embarked on a tour of the United Kingdom. The band broke up in 2001 and Celia went solo, releasing his first album Organica in 2002.

Katzenjammer Kids was a cartoon. This Little known Niagara Falls band played mostly at The Park Hotel. A Katzenjammer means to have a hangover. It literally means caterwauling, or wailing cat sounds. Yo-oh Heave Ho!

3.   The Lincoln County Peach Pickers: Niagara Moon
(E Goerz / J Harden)
Lynn Russwurm's Canadian Country: B.A.C.M CD D-199

Recorded ‘Just Once In A While / I’ll Never Forget’ 78 on Alvina. “Niagara Moon” was released on the Niagara Label S 53727. Considered to be one of the first ‘Bluegrass’ recordings by Canadians.

Recorded in 1987 at Happyrock Studio by Ross Murray

William Terence Tufts born 1954 in Gasline, Ontario

Terry has been playing music for enjoyment since 1963 and professionally since 1974. As an Ottawa based session guy, he’s worked with Tom Paxton, pianist Kathryn Briggs, David Francey, Colleen Peterson, Laura Smith, Ian Tamblyn, The Arrogant Worms, Wayne Rostad, Susan Aglukark, and George Fox.

On the paper dust jacket for the 45 it states: ‘Snowy River Records is proud to persent Terry Tufts and his first single, Niagara. A great up-tempo celebration of home with the touch of nostalgia.’

Neil Ellwood Peart b. Hamilton ON, Sept 12, 1952 / d. Jan 7, 2020 Santa Monica CA

Neil Peart grew up in the Niagara region in the city of St. Catherines. He very quickly went from being a small town band to conquering the world of drumming, joining his idols on the world stage. His first band, The eternal Triangle were known for their memorable song “LSD Forever” which I find most interesting since another local band out of St. Catherines who called themselves the ‘Modbeats’ also had a song called ‘L.S.D.’ in their repertoire.

Produced by Jim Scott, 2015
Recorded by Jim Scott at Plyrz Studios, Valencia CA

Ronald Eldon Sexsmith b. 8 January 1964, St. Catharines ON

Ron Sexsmith was a sleepy eyed, baby faced kid when I first met him in 1988 just after he relocated to Toronto from his home town of St. Catherines. He already had a bunch of terrific original songs in his repertoire and was determined, against all odds, to become successful. It was CKLN Folk show host Joel Wortzman who first turned me onto Ron’s music. Ron has since gone on to international fame and continues to record great albums, totally living up to expectations.

7.   June Eikhard and Her Tantramar Ramblers: Niagara Breakdown

She placed 2nd in the Championship Class at the 1959 annual Canadian Old Time Fiddler’s Contest held in Shelburne, Ontario, being the first woman to do so in the nine years history of the contest. She recorded three fiddle albums for the Rodeo Records’ Banff label. She was the mother of the late singer/songwriter Shirley Eikhard who just passed away on the 15 of December.

Vaughan Jonah: guitar
Garry Kelba: drums
Produced by Tom Shannon & Phil Todaro, March 1959
Recorded at Shan-Todd studios, Buffalo NY by Phil Todaro

Big John Little b. Niagara Falls ON November 1929 (93)

The real name of the band was ‘Big John Little and the Rockers’ but recorded, at their producer’s insistence, as The Hot-Toddys.

This wasn’t their first recording though…their first record was “I’ll Always Love You” bw “Rock With Me Baby” released on the Tri-Fi label out of NYC. Later, under the leadership of Big John Little, they released 1 LP, Twist, on the Metro label out of Montreal and were totally ripped off again. The same album was re-packaged and re-released (without John’s approval) as ‘Big John and The Beetlers’ on the Rusticana label out of Quebec.

John was well connected and was on very friendly terms with Stompin’ Tom Connors and BB King (who gave him one of his Lucilles).

Now in his 93rd year, Big John “T-Bone” Little still performs in and around the Niagara Falls region.

9.   The Three Stooges: Niagara Falls Monologue
(From YouTube)
Gents Without Cents, a 1944

One of the Three Stooges’ best known skits: Niagara Falls, slowly I turn…. Nyuk nyuk nyuk. This performance from Gents Without Cents features Curley and Moe doing the routine, on stage, in front of a band who kept breaking up in giggles.

Going over the falls in a barrel. That was what the game was. Established in 1829 by Sam Patch, known as the Yankee Leaper, the first person to successfully plunge over the brink of the Canadian falls without a barrel.

The first person over the falls in a barrel was a 63 year old widow (who claimed to be 40) who needed to make some money. Annie Edson Taylor made it over alive but failed to capitalize on it. She became known as the first person to plunge over the falls in a barrel. Between 1901 and 1995, 15 people tried to barrel their way but five of them didn’t make it.

They were really known as The Modbeats but the record company, wanting to capture what was left of the British Invasion, dubbed them The British Modbeats. (They later changed back to just Modbeats). In the 1960s, they were the most successful rock band from the Niagara region, releasing one album and a few 45s. Known for their outrageous ‘mod’ clothes look. The album was produced by the same Stan Klees who founded the Juno Awards (as the Maple Leaf Awards) and RPM trade magazine.

RIP Ian Tyson 1933-2022

We pay tribute now to the late Ian Tyson with his fabulous song, Four Strong Winds, followed by Judy Collins brilliant version of Some Day Soon, Ian’s solo version of Summer Wages (his favourite composition), then Johnny Cash’s posthumous 2005 release of Four Strong Winds and end it with Ian’s distraction song about Irving Berlin.

Released April, 1964

Ian Dawson Tyson b. Sept 25, 1933 Victoria, BC / d. Dec 29, 2022 (89) Longview, AB

Ian Tyson would recall "Four Strong Winds" as the first song he ever wrote, and credit Bob Dylan for inspiring Tyson to follow into writing "original folk songs. "(As a songwriter) Bob blazed the trail into the wilderness, into unknown territory."  Tyson remembered meeting up with Dylan in the autumn of 1962 at the Kettle of Fish in Greenwich Village. Tyson recalls Dylan telling him, 'I got this new song I just wrote' and he sang me 'Blowin' in the Wind'. And I thought: “I can do that,” and the next day I wrote 'Four Strong Winds'."

Tyson explained that he asked Dylan's manager Albert Grossman "who was the only one [on the scene] that had a roof over his head:"...'Can I use your apartment tomorrow, cause I want to try and write a song?'" Grossman said sure. I went over there and opened up the guitarcase and started to fooling around and strumming. And it took half an hour" to write "Four Strong Winds". Although Tyson's personal favorite of his compositions is "Summer Wages", he recalls realizing "Four Strong Winds" "was pretty good because [when] I sang it in the folk clubs it blew everybody away".

The song has been recorded by many artists, including Hank Snow, The Seekers, Judy Collins, the Chad Mitchell Trio, Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithfull, The Searchers, John Denver, The Kingston Trio, Trini Lopez, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, Chad and Jeremy, The Wolfe Tones, The Tragically Hip, Joan Baez, Vanity Fare, Glenn Yarborough, Harry Belafonte, Tony Rice, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, Sarah McLachlan, David Wiffen, Hep Stars, Les Contretemps, Neil Young, Mickey and Bunny and Schooner Fare.

First recorded by Ian and Sylvia in 1964, it has been covered by Lynn Anderson, Tanya Tucker and Crystal Gayle.

In 1968, Judy Collins recorded "Someday Soon" for her album Who Knows Where the Time Goes. Although Collins had frequently crossed paths with Ian and Sylvia claiming, "We used to hang out together. I had heard all of their songs" But it was Stephen Stills who suggested to Collins that she should record "Someday Soon". According to Ian Tyson, "Stephen Stills was living with Judy Collins and he told her: 'You've got to record this song.' She didn't want to record it but he pushed her to and that recording was magical."

Their debut album Focus Plays Focus (1970) gained little attention but the follow-up, Moving Waves (1971), and its lead single "Hocus Pocus", earned the band international recognition. Their success continued with Focus 3 (1972) containing their second hit single, the instrumental "Sylvia". After recording two albums with various musicians, Focus dissolved in 1978.

Tom Harrison b. March 11, 1952 St Boniface, MB / d. Dec 27, 2022 Vancouver (70)

Born outside of Winnipeg to a poor family with five young kids, Harrison’s family moved to North Vancouver. By the early ‘70s he was enthralled by music, collecting records and listening to the radio constantly. At university he became the music director at the campus radio station, which then was known as CYVR. He said, “the station was feeble but it put me in contact with record label representatives.” A Toronto-based music monthly, Beetle, had a reviewer that really pissed him off so he wrote a letter of complaint. He wrote back, asking Harrison to write for the magazine. It folded in 1975 and Harrison started writing for Vancouver’s Georgia Strait magazine after Bob Geldof left to return to Ireland to form The Boomtown Rats. He’s been a rock music critic ever since. He was also lead singer for the BC band named after Bruno Gerrusi’s Medallion which the actor wore on an episode of Celebrity Chefs.

An entire album of great Leonard Cohen songs. Released in November 1986, Famous Blue Raincoat is a tribute to Leonard Cohen, with whom Warnes had toured as a backup singer in the 1970s. The idea for the album originated when Cohen assisted Warnes with the lyrics of "Song of Bernadette" while on tour in 1979. Warnes had suggested the album at Arista Records and later MCA Records with no luck. Still she persisted and it paid off in dividends. Certified Triple Platinum (300,000 sales) in Canada alone.

David Bromberg b. September 19, 1945  Philadelphia, PA

Bromberg later said he was "floored" that George Harrison—whom he met at one of the final sessions for Self Portrait in 1970—was familiar with his music, as Dylan had taught Harrison one of Bromberg's songs. He and Harrison subsequently co-wrote "The Holdup" during an evening at the home of New York Post journalist Al Aronowitz, who was also Bromberg's manager. The song depicts tax collecting as the Internal Revenue Service staging a robbery on citizens.

Bromberg recalled that, with only one guitar available, he and Harrison passed the instrument between them; he credited Harrison with writing "some of the best lines" by introducing English humor and expressions. A writer for the American roots music magazine No Depression later described the song as "the manic then suddenly dulcetly Mexican tune: 'The Holdup'".
