Labrador City NL
William Keating (lead guitar)
Pierre LaJeuness (piano)
Maurice Caines (Vocals, rhythm guitar)
Basil Haire (drums)
Produced in Montreal, 1965

William Keating, Born 1939, Conception Harbour, Newfoundland.

Based in one of the most unlikely places in the country, Wabash / Labrador City, the quartet of miners got together to play the lounges. Maurice Caines (October 05, 1940 - March 13, 2013) is brother of another Newfoundland rocker, Claude Caines (who was co-founder of the Quay Records label and the Clode Sound recording studio in Stephenville.) They were the first Newfoundland and Labrador rock act to record a full length album (in Montreal). Their leader, William Keating, had previously been a member of Wilf Doyle’s orchestra.

3.   The Kinks: All Day And All Of The Night
(Ray Davies)
The Kinks Greatest Hits: Pye Records: NPL 30090
London UK
Ray Davies: guitar, vocals
Dave Davies: guitar
Mick Avory: bass
Pete Quaife: drums

Produced by Shel Talmy, 1964
Recorded 23 September 1964 at Pye Studios No. 2, London
Released 23 October 1964

The Kinks were a second wave British Invasion band who were on the cusp of striking gold in America but kind of got screwed up in the process. Someone messed up! Let’s just put it this way: everything that could go wrong on that tour did so and everyone shares the blame. Band members fighting: one lands in hospital, the other’s in jail. Unpaid union dues. Badly promoted gigs. A terrible itinerary. In the end, The Kinks were banned from ever performing in the United States for a period of five years!

Similarities between this song and the Doors' 1968 song, "Hello, I Love You" have been pointed out. Royalties for that Doors’ song are now paid to Ray Davies.

Another former member of Ronnie Hawkins’ Hawks. In 2018 he celebrates 50 years as a professional musician.

Over the past 4 decades Eugene has shared the stage with such great artists of the music world as Gordon Lightfoot, k.d. Lang, David Clayton Thomas, King Curtis, Willie Dixon, Lenny Breau, Peter Tosh, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, The Beach Boys and The Dave Clark Five.

While attending Wimbledon College of Art, Beck played in a succession of groups, including Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages during 1962 when they recorded "Dracula's Daughter".

Hits of the Yardbirds was a Canadian release by Capitol Records of Canada, most likely put together by Paul White. I bought my copy at Sayvette’s, Town & Country Square, Yonge & Steeles December 67. Side one features Jeff Beck while side 2 does Eric Clapton with the Yardbirds. Beck replaced Clapton after he left in ’65 to join John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Jimmy Page would soon join the Yardbirds and played with Beck until he quit the band in 1966.

Randy Bachman’s younger brother. After Bachman left the Guess Who in 1970, he formed a short lived band called Brave Belt with Fred Turner, Chad Allen and Robin, who also went by the name Rob or Bob. This was the nucleus of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Unfortunately, the Bachman brothers ended the band by suing each other over the use of the name which dragged on for years. I hope they reconciled some of it before Robin died. Randy claims that it was difficult to record Robin playing drums because he played so loud.

Two other members of The Mugwumps were Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty who later formed half of the Mamas & the Papas. The formation of the Lovin' Spoonful during this period was later described in the lyrics of the Mamas & the Papas' name dropping hit, "Creeque Alley".  Starting in 1965, the Lovin’ Spoonful produced a slew of hit songs including “Do You Believe in Magic”, “Daydream”, "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," and their biggest hit "Summer in the City". (Sandy Nelson / Richard Podolor)
Sandy Nelson Plays Teen Beat: Imperial Records LP 12044
Los Angeles CA
Sandy Nelson: drums
Richard Podolor: guitar
Produced by Imperial Records Staff, 1960

While most drummers in the latter 1950s chose to play jazz, Sandy Nelson concentrated on making rock records. Beginning in 1959, he released Teen Beat followed by ‘Let There Be Drums’. His first California surf records were minimalistic: just drums and electric guitar, supplied by Richard Podolor. He cracked the dance market by releasing a few dozen albums of instrumental, drum heavy rock hits. Many aspiring young rock drummers, myself included, would put these records on and drum to them, learning how to swing.

First came up to St. John’s to work at Memorial University’s department of folklore in 1974. He immediately befriended Ron Hynes who was playing one of Narvaez’s songs at a local pub, not knowing that Peter was in the house. His first band, in New York, was Pete and Jimmy with the Rhyrhm Knights. DJ Alan Freed was championing rock ‘no’ roll on WINS Radio in NYC, and he produced the band’s sole ’45, So Wild (Castle Records, 1959).

Narvaez started a jug band. Having earned a history degree from Drew University in New Jersey in 1963, he then went to the folklore department at Indiana State University in Bloomington and earned his MA (1967). One of his fellow students was Neil Rosenberg who would later move to St. John’s to work at Memorial University’s department of folklore.

In 1975, Narvaez gave a young musician named Kelly Russell a tape of Newfoundland fiddler Rufus Guinchard. Russell was with a then-fledgling Figgy Duff, and a folk music revival in that province then followed. (Narvaez played harmonica on the first Wonderful Grand Band album.)

Lucky 7 was a side-project of Margolis and as far as I can tell, they only put out this one album.
