I once lived right beside Arlene and would often hear her practicing. We lived in the Bain Co-op here in Toronto and this album reflects her time here, personnel wise as well.  In 1983, she toured post-coup Chile with Bruce Cockburn and shared the stage with him.

5.   Les Merseys: Soldat de bois (Wooden Soldier)
With A Little Help From My Friends
(Lennon / McCartney / Bégin)
45 single bw : DSP Records 8607
Montreal
Alain Jodoin: vocals
François Bégin: guitar
Georges Marchand: bass
Normand Alepin: lead guitar
Richard Tate: drums
Produced by Yves Martin, 1968

These guys were apparently originally known as The Blue Men and had a repertoire that was heavily influenced by the Mersybeat; hence the 1964 decision to change the band name to Les Merseys.  In 1965, the Mersey's became the house band for the TV program "Bonsoir copains" in Sherbrooke. Lead singer Alain Jodoin apparently did a remarkable imitation of Mick Jagger which made him very popular with les jeune filles. They also did a few songs in English.

Kinkdom: Reprise Records – 6184
London UK
Ray Davies: guitar, vocal
Dave Davies: lead guitar
Mick Avory: drums
Pete Quaiffe: bass
Produced by Shel Talmy, 1965

According to Ray Davies, this song is about the loss of his sister, who lived for a time in Ontario, Canada. Upon her return to England she developed a sickness and died while dancing at a night club. Just before she died she gave Ray his first guitar for his 13th birthday. Inspiration for the song came after a stopover in Bombay, where, finding himself jetlagged on a beach, Davies encountered two fishermen chanting on their way to their morning work. "I remember getting up, going to the beach and seeing all these fishermen coming along," said Davies. "I heard chanting to start with, and gradually the chanting came a bit closer and I could see it was fishermen carrying their nets out."

The Shadows were a British instrumental rock group and a Cliff Richard's backing band, with 69 UK chart singles to their credit. They were all members of various skiffle groups till they merged and got into guitar based surf music in the late 1950s. Daisy DeBolt (b. 1945 / d. October 4, 2011)
Allan Hugh Fraser (born 21 July 1948 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick)

This is a double album of previously unreleased material to go along with the two albums Fraser and DeBolt released in the early 1970s. Some of the recordings were most likely compiled from cassette tapes, maybe reel to reels, recorded in coffee houses and other concerts or studio demos. While the quality of the recordings are all listenable, I still have trouble with the mastering from track to track – it could have been better. Still, it’s better to hear this duo at the height of their career, something neither of them would accomplish in their solo careers.

Dave Crosby: guitar, bg vocals
Chris Hillman: bass
Michael Clark: drums, tambourine
Produced by Terry Melcher, 1965
Recorded June 28 - November 1, 1965, Columbia Studios, Hollywood

"He Was a Friend of Mine" is a traditional folk song that was modified by Jim (Roger) McGuinn to lament the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Folklorist Alan Lomax first collected the song in 1939 and described it as a "blues" that was "a dirge for a dead comrade." Rolf Cahn recorded the song on his 1961 Folkways album “Rolf Cahn & Eric von Schmidt”, where the song for the first time was titled "He Was a Friend of Mine". Bob Dylan picked up the song from the Cahn recording and made some changes to it when he recorded it for his first album on November 20, 1961 but it didn’t make the final cut.

McGuinn explained the origins of The Byrds’ version of the song in an interview: "I wrote the song the night John F. Kennedy was assassinated. I suppose you could say it's one of the earliest Byrds songs. It would go on to become a staple of The Byrds' live concert repertoire, until their final disbandment in 1973.

Charles Hardin Holley b. September 7, 1936, Lubbock, Texas / d. February 3, 1959 (22) Clear Lake, Iowa

Despite Holly's numerous contributions to rock 'n' roll, a 1957 interview with Vancouver disc jockey Red Robinson suggests that the singer questioned the longevity of the genre. When asked whether rock 'n' roll music would still be around after six or seven months, Holly replied, "I rather doubt it."

Though his professional career spanned just two short years, Holly's recorded material influenced Bob Dylan, who, at age 17, saw Holly perform on his final tour. The Rolling Stones had their first Top 10 single in 1964 with a cover of Holly's "Not Fade Away." The Beatles chose their name as a kind of homage to The Crickets, and Paul McCartney has since purchased Holly's publishing rights.
