Tony Meehan: percussion
Produced  1961

Brian Robson Rankin (Hank Marvin) b. 28 October 1941 Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

In England, before The Beatles broke, The Shadows were the biggest rock band in the land. With instrumental hits of their own, including Apache, they were also the backing band of Cliff Richard and even played themselves in Richard’s hit 1963 film, Summer Holiday. Guitarist Hank Marvin inspired countless budding guitar players who went on to lead the British Invasion.

Fournier ON
Bobby Lalonde: fiddle
Gerry Lalonde: drums
Gilles Lalonde: bass
Mac Lalonde: piano
Produced by London Records 1973

Age 13 yrs.

In Ottawa, Bobby Lalonde’s name is synonymous with fiddles. As a kid he got to perform in Stompin’ Tom’s performance movie ‘Across This Land’ and was also featured  on the soundtrack. From there he recorded and released his first LP in 1973, on London Records. I chose Don Messer’s patented piece, Ripplin’ Water Jig, which is very difficult to play properly, to test how proficient Bobby was at such a young age.

He’s also been a multi-instrumentalist session player in the Ottawa region, a country singer and a strong advocate for music in general in the National Capitol Region.

Watertown was really a solo project of singer Scott Dibble, a friend of Bare Naked Ladies and other Queen Street West acts of the late 1980s. It was named after the town where Dibble resided, close to Hamilton ON. Released first on Blue Rodeo’s label, Risque Disk, the album was eventually turned over to WEA but didn’t go anywhere. Dibble then retreated back behind the sound board for future endeavors.

(Mr Zigzag Man)
Produced at CHCR Radio, 2001

This was a mock ad for a mock radio serial ‘The Adventures of Paperman’ produced live each week at Killaloe radio station CHCR by a cast of local characters. Apparently we lost the actor who voiced Mr Zigzag Man a few years ago. Paperman had the ability to show up when people ran out of rolling papers.

Recorded at Northumberland Music Studio 29, Campbellford ON

I was in Arnprior, Ontario searching out Mac Beattie in the 1990s when I was shown the cassette Last of the White Pine Loggers by the Wakami Wailers. I put it into the tape deck of the car and was carried away by their lovely arrangements of traditional Canadian logging songs. It was the first of three albums they put out. The band members met while on a Parks Ranger course at Wakami Lake, south of the village of Foleyet in Northern Ontario.

11. Barney McCaffrey: The Jolly Drovers of Westmeath
(Trad)
Live at The Great North Wind Radio Program
Wilno ON
Barney McCaffrey: accordion, vocals
Produced by Steve Fruitman
Recorded live at CIUT October 19, 1992

Bernard McCaffrey b. USA / d. Wilno ON January 4, 2012 (77)

Not from vinyl or CD! This was from a live performance at CIUT on my 1992 radio program ‘The Great North Wind’. I had the privilege of having Barney on my program twice! This was from the first appearance.

The Jolly Drovers of Westmeath is a traditional Ottawa Valley logging song that Barney learned from Pearl Miller, a woman who frequented a bar in Pembroke where Barney played. She had to be at the right state of inebriation to sing the song in its entirety. Many times Barney tried to get her to sing it but she was either too drunk or not drunk enough to do it. Finally, one afternoon, she was in perfect singing condition and he recorded it on his cassette recorder. It’s a great song which uses the metaphor of ‘horses getting too fat’ for being lazy.

12. James O’Neill: Ireland Boys, Hurrah!
(Timothy Daniel Sullivan)
Ireland Boys Hurrah! and other Irish Ballads: Copley - DWL 7-400
Ireland
John O'Neill's Orchestra
Producer not listed - circa 1957

Timothy Daniel Sullivan (29 May 1827 – 31 March 1914) was an Irish nationalist, journalist, politician and poet who wrote the Irish national hymn "God Save Ireland", in 1867. He served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1886 to 1888 and a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1880 to 1900.

Ireland Boys, Hurrah! also known as “Dear Old Ireland”, was first published in 1861 in Sullivan's music collection “Songs of the Backwoods”. Its nostalgic lyrics are about Irish emigrants living in Canada, working in the woods. This was an imagined setting, however, as Sullivan himself never set foot in Canada. In its own way, it was as made up as Monte Python’s ‘I’m a Lumberjack’ song.

It’s also interesting to note that Canadian folk band, The Irish Rovers, recorded the song but changed the first line: “Deep in Canadian Woods we've met from one bright island flown”, was replaced with Pennsylvanian woods. What were they thinkin’?

13. Mac Beattie & the Ottawa Valley Melodiers: St Patrick’s Day At Neville’s
(John MacNab Beattie)
This Ottawa Valley Of Mine: Banff Rodeo Records – RBS 1211
Arnprior ON
Reg Hill, fiddle
Gaetan Fairfield, guitar

Tony Miseferi, bass
Gordie Summers, lead guitar
Mac Beattie, vocal, drums washboard
Produced by Ralph Carlson, January 16, 1966
http://www.backtothesugarcamp.com/macbeattie.html

Douglas, Ontario, is the place where Mac Beattie used to perform regularly with his band, the Ottawa Valley Melodiers, on St. Patrick’s Day. It was run by two Brothers, Barney and Joseph Neville. For over 60 years, the Douglas Hotel/Tavern was operated by the McHale family, and it was sold in 2021 with the building slated to be converted into a mattress warehouse, leaving drinkers a tad disappointed, especially on St. Patrick’s Day.

Recorded by Chris Dickie, Roy Spong & Nick Lacey at RAK Studios, London 1987

From the ‘80s heyday of The Pogues, Fiesta is and has been one of my favorite songs. It was shortly after the album ‘If I Should Fall From Grace With God’ was released that I began doing radio at CIUT and this was a go to album for me. A mix of Mexican and Irish punk, it hits all the right buttons for me. How did it do for you?

16. The Action: TV’s On The Blink
(The Action)
4 song EP: Montreco Records
Ottawa
John Fenton: lead guitar
Paul Fenton: slide guitar
Michael Fenton: bass
Ted Axe: vocals
Scott "Shot" MacDonald: drums

John Fenton b. 1953 / d. April 2, 2020

Formed in 1977, The Action was one of the first garage-punk bands in Canada, and the first band to include all three of Ottawa’s Fenton brothers, with John and Paul on guitar and their younger brother, Michael, who was still in his teens, on bass. Claimed Paul Fenton: We were definitely the first punk band in Ottawa. The EP they released became a cult hit in New York, and sold thousands of copies in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. By the early 1980s the Action were morphing into the Fenton Brothers Band (1984) who put out two albums in the mid ‘80s and broke up in 1990. Paul Fenton put out a solo album in 2000.

John Buddy Roberts (aka Buddy Black) b. Moncton NB July 6, 1935 / d. May 15, 2011 Bowmanville ON (75).

Bud Roberts had been a truck driver and had a song written for him by Stompin’ Tom: it was called “Bud The Spud” but he failed to record it (so Connors did the honours himself!). He had a rocky professional music career, put out a couple of albums and had a few minor hit songs, including Jimmy Simpson’s ‘Alcan Run’. The "Alcan Run" song would later also be recorded by Canadian balladeer Stompin' Tom Connors. “The Longest Run” was very similar in structure and in some ways just as good as The Alcan Run. His only other hit was his own composition called “I’ve Got The Bottle and The Bar Stool”.

5.   Ted Wesley: MacKenzie Road

Blackflies and Mosquitos and Other Love Songs: Boot Records BOS 7143

Ted Wasylkiewicz b. Zambia 1951

Ted Wesley was born in Abercorn, in the former British-African colony of Northern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, of Polish refugee parents.  When he was six the family moved to England; three years later the family emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta. Being a big kid, he first came north in 1967 as a teen and went to work in the Discovery gold mine north of Yellowknife.  "I lied to them, told them I was 18," he said. Within weeks he met Andy Steen and they formed the band called “The Tundra Folk”. He went solo in 1972 and released a trio of albums featuring songs by northern songwriters Bob Ruzicka and Wilf Bean. He was also a part time Elvis impersonator.

Now living in Northern Alberta, Wesley is still performing. The MacKenzie Highway (or road) begins at Grimshaw, Norhtern Alberta and drives north, above the 60th, up to Yellowknife.

Al Bruneau b. Sudbury ON January 22, 1937 /  d. August 21, 2015 Pensacola, Florida

A No-Name guitarist from Sudbury, comes to Toronto, pays his dues, records an album then leaves for the States where he got to play on recordings by a lot of big stars. In 1963, he moved to Philadelphia, where he worked on Dick Clark’s famous American Bandstand TV show and became Musical Director for Clark’s Caravan of Stars tours. When Dick Clark relocated to a new home base in Los Angeles, Al Bruno followed along. He became the house guitarist for Capitol Records alongside Glen Campbell, playing on recordings that became huge hits. He later became a Producer. One Canadian that is definitely under the radar.

8.   Sopwith Camel: Postcard From Jamaica

San Francisco
Peter Kraemer, vocal, sax
Terry MacNeil and William "Truckaway" Sievers, guitars
Martin Beard, bass
Norman Mayell, drums
Produced by Erik Jacobsen, 1967
Recorded by Val Valentin

There were albums that I bought strictly because of the cover. Back in the ‘60s, there was little to go on; you either bought pop music magazines or listened to the radio to gather any information about the music scene. I purchased my Sopwith Camel album, having heard just one song ‘Hello, Hello’ on the radio and never regretted it. It’s a fabulous album of original psychedelic jug band music. Postcard From Jamaica was supposed to be their follow up to Hello, Hello but didn’t do so well.

Baroque Rock is how these guys were marketed. Young kids from New York. Someone recently asked on Twitter: “What’s your favourite song on the album?” And I answered: “All of ‘em”. I stand by that. These were teenagers who were way ahead of their time. It helped that principal songwriter Mike Brown’s (aka Lookofsky) father was a major music producer in New York at the time and helped arrange and produce the album which contained two major hits: Walk Away Rene and Pretty Ballerina.

An original member of Blue Rodeo, Wiseman quit the band to concentrate on things that really mattered to him. He did some production work and songwriting and released several albums of his original material. This song is really dreamy, with Mary Margaret O’Hara dueting with him.
