And Now for The Particulars

Side Aye

1.   The Astroids: Shhhhhh Blast Off
(John Everett / Alan Reid)
45 rpm - Rodeo Records RD 182
Saint John NB
Bob Seely:  pianist
Mel Clark:  guitar, lead vocal
Alan Reid: bass guitar,
Jon Everett aka Dov Ivry: drums
Produced 1958
Recorded at Rodeo Records Studios, Halifax

The group that made the first rock 'n' roll record in Atlantic Canada. On April 23 of that year (1958) the four Asteroids set out from their homes in Saint John, New Brunswick, for what was then a seven-hour trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to make the first rock 'n' roll record in that part of the world. The Asteroids were formed in 1957 by Mel Clark, Jon Everett (Dov Ivry) and Alan Reid. They were 16 years old. When the  Sputnik went up not long after, they sat down and wrote their first song, Satellite. Blast off was the first Rodeo Records, basically a C&W label, release of rock n roll. The Studio only had 2 mics and they cut two 45s. Hi tech! Bob Seely died in 2015.

The two had originally begun working together as professional musicians in 1963 and had been managed for a short time by future True North Records founder, Bernie Finkelstein. Ryan and Yeomans, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, had been in an early Canadian garage band, The Amen, with drummer Bucky Berger.

Jackson Hawke's first single, released in 1976, was a double-sided hit called "You Can't Dance" backed with a version of Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic". The band's 1977 single, "Set Me Free", peaked at number 54 in Canada, and went to number 11 on the CHUM Chart in Toronto.

From 1964 to 1967, Garrett played in the Toronto jug/string band, the Dirty Shames. It was during this period that Garrett took John Hammond Jr. to see Levon and the Hawks for the first time. The Hawks would later be recommended by Hammond to Bob Dylan.

After serving in other peoples’ bands (like Anne Murray, Maria Muldaur, Ian & Syvia’s Great Speckled Bird, Paul Butterfield’s Better Days), Garrett claimed: "I wanted to sing. I loved to sing, but there was no way I could do so being a hired gun for bands." Curtis Clements b. Trinidad 28 November 1940 / d. 27 March 2017 (76)

Another song featuring the great vocals of the late Clem Curtis.

Clem arrived in England from his native Trinidad at the age of fifteen and later found employment as an interior decorator. He took up boxing and won most of his fights as a professional boxer. In 1966 Curtis joined The Ramong Sound. He joined the group after hearing from his uncle that Raymond Morrison, Ramong’s the lead singer, was looking for backup vocalists. After losing their original lead singer, the band took on board Arthur Brown temporarily, and went through a few name changes before they became The Foundations. Arthur Brown stated in an interview that in his time with the group, he enjoyed singing with Curtis. They both sang separately as well as doing some duets. The group emerged in January 1967 with Curtis as their lead singer scoring hits like Baby, Not That I’ve Found You and Build Me Up Buttercup.

This was a brilliant way to finish off The Monkees’ first album. Sorry about the Zulu joke! A lot of this was totally ad lib, right off the floor. Another Boyce and Hart song backed up by a studio band without a Monkee playing on it. Great use of stereo tho! That’s Micky Dolenz left and Davy Jones, right.

One of the better psychedelic bands in Britain that never really made it. Maybe their name had something to do with that. “Ya, I’m a Toes fan!” They recorded two albums for Marmalade Records, owned by Yardbirds and Soft Machine manager Giorgio Gomelsky. Gomelsky was from Georgia SSR and moved to London where he operated The Crawdaddy Club with The Rolling Stones as the house band. When the Stones left he hired The Yardbirds. What a great songwriter! He’s a rough and tough West coast of Newfoundland saltwater cowboy who spent time in Egypt in the Canadian Armed Forces in the early ‘60s before turning his sights on songwriting and performing. Along with fellow Newfoundlander, Dick Nolan, they were two Newfoundland ex-pats who lived and worked out of Toronto.

The Dog Star Sirius is the brightest star in our sky  in the constellation Canis Major (The Greater Dog). It was featured in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), novel and series by Douglas Adams. Most of the technology mentioned in the Hitchhiker series consists of products of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, a decidedly inept company responsible for the design and creation of a wide range of robots and labor-saving devices, none of which worked as intended.

The Dog Star Sirius was also a feature reference in Paul Quarrington’s novel ‘Logan in Overtime’. (Basically about a hockey game up in Sudbury that goes into about twenty overtime periods). The “Mind-fuckers from the Dog Star Sirius were The Dogons. They were not fully formed beings, thus they could only take over an Earthling’s.

There have been numerous bands who’ve called themselves Suckerpunch: in the UK, San Antonio, Texas, Michigan, Chicago and Florida, but the one we played today was the punk band from Toronto.

Still in high-school in the late 80’s, guitarist Christopher Dignan formed Suckerpunch with older brother Sean on drums and ex-Heatseekers bass player Cindy Beattie. With Christopher as the gyrating guitar swinging front man, Suckerpunch quickly became the must see band in town. They broke up in 1995 with the Dignan brothers joining Dodge Fiasco and later The Kensington Hillbillies.

He made his first recording, of his own song "Paper in My Shoe," in 1954. The record was a regional hit, subsequently acknowledged as a zydeco standard, but Chavis was convinced that it was more successful than the record companies claimed, later saying: "I got gypped out of my record. I get frustrated, sometimes. I love to play, but, when I get to thinking about 1955... They stole my record. They said that it only sold 150,000 copies. But, my cousin, who used to live in Boston, checked it out. It sold over a million copies. I was supposed to have a gold record." Chavis lost trust in the music business, and over the next thirty years only released three more singles. He regained his trust in the business in the 1980s when he recorded several albums for Rounder Records. He was inducted into the Zydeco Hall of Fame in 1998.
