Opposed the South African government’s apartheid system, he moved to the UK in 1961 and began to write for "Jazz News" under the pseudonym Manfred Manne (after jazz drummer Shelly Manne). His first UK band was called The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers and were soon signed to EMI. They were urged to change their name to Manfred Mann. They recorded massive hits throughout the rest of the 60s before evolving into the jazz-fusion Earth Band. They’ve continued to perform and made their last record in 2006.

Early owners of each copy of The Good Earth were entitled to rights over 1 square foot of the earth situated at Llanerchyrfa in the County of Brecon, in Wales. The inner sleeve included a coupon that had to be sent for registration. This was part of the promotion activities linked to the album that had ecological inspirations. After falling in love with recording technology after buying a cheap reel to reel tape recorder from a flee market, Daniel and his late brother Bob began buying equipment, taking it apart and putting it back together again, sometimes making a device sound more interesting. They purchased a couple of Revox tape machines and began experimenting. They eventually took over the basement of their mother’s house on Grant Avenue in Hamilton, offering their services to help pay for their addiction. Their first clients were folk music producers like Stan Rogers and David Essig but eventually expanded into rock and new wave music world. Today, hear some of the music that brought the Lanois’ world together before and after Brian Eno.

Another band that formed in 1966. Influenced by the music of Paul McCartney, they were sometimes accused of sounding more like The Beatles than the Beatles did. The GG&F recording in their home studio on Brondesbury Road with Judy Dyble singing lead vocals. She wrote to me once and told me what she remembered most were the mike stands holding up carpets to buffer the players away from each other. It was never supposed to be an actual album but certainly shows the foundations of what would become King Crimson.

Hector Miranda b Argentina 1930 / d. 2018

Founded in Paris France by Hector Miranda and his wife Ana Maria in 1960. They went on to record some amazing Andean music on traditional instruments, but their biggest records were La Flute Indienne (1966) which was reprised here with singer Guillermo de la Roca on La Flute Indienne volume 2. They were hired to do the soundtrack of "State Of Siege" the film by Costa Gavras starring Yves Montand and with music composed by Mikis Theodorakis.

Having spent a year in the high Andean countries, I grew to love the music I heard there. When I returned home in 1974, I immediately sped down to Sam The Record Man’s main store on Yonge Street and started buying these records. They were also the first Latin American band to record El Condor Pasa, later used by Paul Simon.

According to Bryan MacLean, "Orange Skies" was the first song he ever wrote. At the time 17 years old and working as a roadie for The Byrds, he based the song on a section from The Byrds' version of "The Bells of Rhymney", attributing that arrangement to Roger McGuinn.

After the breakup of the original Animals band in 1966, Eric Burden put this new Animals band together and this was, in my opinion, the coolest song they put out. Originally released in two sections, one on each side of the single. Here’s a version that I spliced together.

Crash Vegas formed in 1988 and disbanded in 1996. They were the brainchild of Michelle McAdorey and Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor who, due to Blue Rodeo commitments, left the band and was replaced by Colin Cripps. Jocelyne Chantal Lanois is a Canadian musician, bass player and songwriter from Hull, Quebec, who has been a member of the bands Martha and the Muffins and Crash Vegas. She has also had touring stints as bass player with Ani DiFranco and Chris Whitley, and played on Sarah McLachlan's album Solace. She is the sister of record producer Daniel Lanois. Lanois left the band on acrimonious terms after the release of Red Earth and their label Risque Disque went bankrupt, leaving the band in limbo. McAdorey was the niece of the late Canadian television and radio personality Bob McAdorey. She now lives near Peterborough and recently released a new album.

12. Pursuit of Happiness: When The Sky Comes Falling Down
(Moe Berg)
Love Junk: Chrysalis Records CHS-41675
Toronto
Moe Berg: guitar, vocals

Johnny Sinclair: bass
Kris Abbott: guitars
Leslie Stanwyck: vocals
Produced and Mixed by Todd Rundgren, 1988
Recorded at Utopia Sound Studios, Lake Hill NY by Todd Rundgren
Mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, NYC

Starting a band in Edmonton, Alberta in the 1980s was difficult to be recognized so drummer Dave Gilby and guitarist Moe Berg moved to Toronto and started TPOH. Within a year they recorded an album and another year later they signed to Chrysalis Records. Their second album sold over 100,000 copies in Canada alone (platinum). By the end of the 1990s they were not a functioning band anymore and waited until 2005 to record another record. 2018 saw the re-issue of Love Junk Deluxe set. And they’re still doing gigs.

Heifetz left his native Russia in 1917 and settled in the USA. He made his first recordings in 1910, at the age of 9. Made his first recordings for RCA 7 years later. He went on to record with some of the greatest orchestras in the US.

14. Peter Green: In The Skies
(Peter Green)
In The Skies: Salt Records / Attic Records Canada LAT 1077
London UK
Peter Green: vocal, electric guitar
Snowy White: lead guitar solo
Lennox Langton: conga
Kuma Herada: bass
Peter Bardens: Hammond organ
Reg Isidore: drums
Produced by Peter Vernon-Kell, 1979

After Peter Left the Mac in 1970 he suffered various mental health problems, resulting in electro-shock therapy and being institutionalized, power of attorney over his affairs being granted to his family. He hardly touched a guitar for most of the 1970s until he re-emerged out of the darkness in 1979 with the release of ‘In The Skies’.

In 1988 Green was quoted as saying: "I'm at present recuperating from treatment for taking drugs. It was drugs that influenced me a lot. I took more than I intended to. I took LSD eight or nine times. The effect of that stuff lasts so long ... I wanted to give away all my money ... I went kind of holy. I thought I could do it, I thought I was all right on drugs. My failing!
