Peter Jellard: violin
Rick Conroy: keys
Tim Hadley: bass
Steve Copek: guitar
Steve Fruitman: mandola, percussive shoes
Produced by John Switzer, 1997
Recorded by John Switzer at the House of Copec, Toronto; The Old Hadley PIace, the Fearless Kitchen, Toronto
Mastered at The Lacquer Channel, Toronto

Peter Jellard: “I used to busk at the St. Lawrence Market with a group of musicians… One morning we got there early to find that our spot had been taken by another act. Only after the commotion had died down, did I realize that my fiddle was missing…left on a Street Car. I called up the TTC only to be told that the cars goi around to the end of the loop, and turn back the oither way. I was instructed to go back to King Street to wait for street cars going in the other direction, and ask every street car drive if they had seen a fiddle. This seemed like such a long shot that we went for coffee and commiserated about the morning. Around 11 a.m. I wandered up to King St. and started my vigil. When the first car came up, the door opened, and the driver asked me if I wanted to buy a fiddle!”

2.   Hound Dog Taylor: 55th Street Boogie
(Roosevelt Taylor)
Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers: Alligator Records 4701
Chicago IL
Theodore Roosevelt Taylor: vocals, slide guitar

Brewer Phillips: guitar
Produced by Bruce Iglauer, 1971
Recorded by Stu Black

Theodore Roosevelt Taylor b. Natchez Mississippi, Apr 12, 1915 / d. Chicago Dec 17, 1975 (60)

Around 1970, a young Bruce Iglauer was working as a shipping clerk for a small Chicago blues record label, Delmark, when he first heard Hound Dog Taylor and The Houserockers perform at a Chicago club. The unusual three piece band (Hound Dog’s distorted slide guitar; Phillips’ bass runs played on a normal electric guitar, and the drums of Ted Harvey) had no bass player, were as loud as hell and primitive as possible. Iglauer eagerly ran back to Delmark to persuade them to sign the band, but Delmark balked. Using his own money, Igauer brought the band into a recording studio and at the cost of $900., had them record live, like at a club, no overdubs. He put the record out on his own new Alligator Records label. Taylor brought the hard rocking folk blues to light, recording three raw albums for the fledgling recording company before succumbing to lung cancer in 1975. He was elected to the Blues Hall of Fame in 1984.

Goodge Street, in London, is built around a tube station first named Tottenham Court Road. In the mid-1960s some of Goodge Street’s cafes gained a reputation as hang-outs where illicit substances might be obtained. Donovan’s ‘Sunny Goodge Street’ was one of the first pop songs to explicitly mention drug-taking. Judy Collins, Marianne Faithfull and Paul McCartney later recorded cover versions. For a while, Goodge Street’s name became emblematic of the ‘stoned’ hippie lifestyle, even rating a mention on the American cop show Hawaii Five-O.

Lightfoot also had another song about dreams: “Patriot’s Dream” released on his Don Quixote album in 1972. That is by far my favourite Lightfoot album. Patriot’s Dream was written in two distinct parts, something Lightfoot experimented with earlier on The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. It’s a powerful song that is unfortunately timeless as things never seem to change: they just wave back and forth in time.

The Dog Star Sirius is the brightest star in our sky  in the constellation Canis Major (The Greater Dog). It was featured in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), novel and series by Douglas Adams. Most of the technology mentioned in the Hitchhiker series consists of products of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, a decidedly inept company responsible for the design and creation of a wide range of robots and labor-saving devices, none of which worked as intended.

The Dog Star Sirius was also a feature reference in Paul Quarrington’s novel ‘Logan in Overtime’. (Basically about a hockey game up in Sudbury that goes into about twenty overtime periods). The “Mind-fuckers from the Dog Star Sirius were The Dogons. They were not fully formed beings, thus they could only take over an Earthling’s limb (which could be a problem for goaltenders).
