Wayne Tucker, of CHMR’s Newfound Records, recently passed through Toronto to see his son perform at the Mariposa Festival as a member of Youngtree and the Blooms. This is a great young band built around singer-songwriter Peter Youngtree who has some pretty interesting takes on things which comes out in his songs. Dirt Party is a good example of what I mean.

Zalman Yanovsky
b. Toronto December 19, 1944 / d. December 13, 2002, in Kingston, Ontario (57)

So what’s with O Canada at the beginning of the album? And why is it left to die on the platter. Could it be how Zally was feeling after being deported from America back to his home and native land? The way I see it: ‘Ya, I’m back alone in Canada again without a career just for smokin’ some weed. Bummer man – a real bummer! After recording this lone solo album which was way ahead of its time, he got into the restaurant industry in Kingston.

He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1996

Interesting fact:

Yanovsky met Canadian actress Jackie Burroughs in a Laundromat in Toronto, where he was sleeping in a dryer while homeless. They were married in 1961 and had one daughter, Zoe, before separating in 1968.

14. Living Marimbas: Do You Know The Way To San Jose

Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head: RCA Camden CAS-2400
NYC

Produced by Ethel Garbiel, 1970
Recorded in RCA's Studio C, New York City by Bob Simpson

Capitalizing on the Tijuana Brass craze, there were other bands of professionally hired musicians like Living Marimbas who were marketed as a ‘band’. They were hired to record sanitized (but good) pop hits with a marimba sound that people like my parents liked to play at thematic Mexican sombrero parties.

15. It’s All Meat: You Don’t Notice The Time You Waste

Originally released on Columbia Records ‎ELS-374
Digital Remastering: Bruce Ley, Toronto

“Hi Steve. This is Wayne Roworth formerly of It’s All Meat. I was surfing the net the other day and came across one of your vinyl shows and noticing you played one of IAM (It’s All Meat) songs. In the footnotes you commented on playing with me in 1972. I can’t immediately remember it. Sign of old age! Your memory is obviously better than mine. Could you look under the rock in my head and please remind me. TIA. Wayne. P.S. Still writing and playing music.

Hi Wayne great to hear from you.  Ya, we did 2 or 3 gigs with Paul Burton on bass and another guy on second guitar.  We were put together by Ron Clark to play at a curling club. I played drums. You lent me your copy of the IAM lp to learn Self Confessed Lover.

“Thanks for the kind words. I keep in touch with Jed MacKay several times a year. He’s a producer for TV Ontario. We almost had a IAM reunion in NYC 10 years ago but it didn’t pan out. Rick Aston and Norm White died early. Rick McKim is still with us and is still musically active. I’ve been in the USA for almost 35 years mostly in the southeast. Been gigging and recording. Have several albums.”

Harry Bryan
d. Ferryland NL 2022

Cherri were a Toronto band circa 1970 with two Bryan brothers as lead vocalists. They recorded one album in 1970 that was never released. Harry Bryan used to work for Co-operators insurance in Guelph. He retired and moved with his family to Ferryland, NL where he started up an internet radio station called Southern Shore Sounds.

I first met Harry online, on a folk music listserve. He was working at Co-Operator’s Insurance out of Guelph and was living up in Georgetown, Ontario. In 1996 he released a CD of his own songs called Long ‘Road To One’ so he sent me a copy. It had a lot of Northern Ontario in it and he loved touring up that way. We had Timmins in common.

Although we’ve only actually met once or twice, Harry Bryan and I were instant friends. We met in a restaurant in St. John’s with Wayne Tucker. Harry handed over a bunch of albums and said, ‘you might like to have these.’ Canadian rock albums from 1970. He also handed me a CD of his old band Cherri who also recorded at that time but never saw an album release.

Harry died as Deputy Mayor of Ferryland.

The new name originated during a rehearsal of the Talking Heads's "Psycho Killer.” Unable to recall the French portions sung in the original (e.g., Qu'est-ce que c'est?), they instead started shouting any foreign-language words they could remember, including the title of the popular 1970s memory board game Hūsker Dū? (the phrase meaning "do you remember?" in Danish and Norwegian).

Tame Impala is really a composer / performer Kevin Parker’s solo project, releasing four albums of very interesting stuff. When he performs live, he utilizes a touring band but plays all the music himself for his studio performances. This song – which is a rare bonus track – has the same feel as Manic Depression.
