I got this off a Folkways LP released in 1988 featuring some heavyweights. U2 were beginning to be a heavyweight; others included Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Emmy-Lou, Willie Nelson, Brian Wilson, Sweet Honey In The Rock….undeniably heavyweights.

Rick Fielding
b. Montreal 1944 / d. Toronto March 20, 2004
Rick was more of a raconteur of fine songs rather than a songwriter. He wasn’t very prolific, but when he wrote a song, you knew it had that timeless quality. You liked it immediately. This one from an album he refused to endorse due to the suave album cover of Rick in a gold lame shirt and afro hair instead of using the folkie one of him sitting on a stool in overalls, beneath a black cowboy hat. The photo on the cover (meant for entertainment ‘money’ gigs) embarrassed him, which is a shame, because the record really captured his essence way back in 1981.
4. Marilyn Reddick: Santa's Dream
(F Seigel)
78 rpm: Alvina Records - AL-1016
Hamilton ON
MC Quartet: harmonies
Produced by Art and Lou Snider, 1956
Reddick was crowned Miss Canada 1952 which got her a singing job in a Toronto band. She came to Art Snider’s Alvina Records to record one side on a 78: Santa’s Dream. There were only about 15 records released on that early Toronto label. The B side features the MC Quartet, one of whom guested on my program and brought in the record. Unfortunately, the disk suffered a slight malfunction; the spindle hole isn’t perfectly centered, therefore producing a slight wobble.
5. Micky Katz: Litvak Square Dance

Meyer Myron Katz
b. Cleveland, Ohio, June 15, 1909 / d. April 30, 1985 (75) Los Angeles
It is very rare for a lunar calendar and ours to link up. This year we have Chanukah fall on Christmas Day.
A Jewish American singer and comedian, Katz was accused of making stereo-typical sketches of Jews while popularizing Jewish music and humor. He was very successful in the late 1940s and 50s, recorded several albums that sold very well. This song is a klezmer square dance.

My dilemma: Should I play Elvis or Dick Nolan singing Blue Christmas. I couldn’t make up my mind. Then I remembered this classic recording of it from Under the Mistletoe by the Good Lovelies just after the release of their first album in 2009.,.

Steel Pole Victim on cover photo: Bucky Falzetta
From an album put together by the late Michael Wrycraft that is a classic. Sticking your tongue on a cold steel pole in the schoolyard never ended well. But this compilation album of Winter songs does. It features a wide assortment of Toronto based artists, from Andrea Koziol to Swamperella, Bob Snider, October Browne, David Woodhead, Jani Lauzon, Andy Stochansky to One Horse Town. Great songs, great performances, great album.

12. Bob May: Christmas at Moosonee
(Barney McCracken)
Songs of Barney McCracken: Sourdough - BCR-1002
Englehart ON
Bob May: vocal, guitar

Barney McCracken was a poet from Englehart, North Eastern Ontario, who wrote songs about the north. He was born around 1903 and lived out his life in the North. Bill MacNeill, host of CBC Radio’s popular program, Voice of the Pioneer, claimed, “Barney McCracken writes the freshest verse since Robert Service. When it comes to writing about the North, Barney is DEAD ON.”

Performed at CIUT Studios, 91 St George St
It was Christmas time and I had a number of performers associated with Whiskey Jack in the studio back at 91 St George. The vocals aren’t up at the front where I’d like them, but this was live radio, music done the old fashioned way with great harmonies.

Recorded by Gary Morris at Prime Time Studios, Sussex NB
Ivan Hicks is one of the most respected fiddlers of Atlantic Canada, but not noted for the way that he sings. This Christmas album he released independently shows the man can sing with a strong, controlled voice just as good as he plays the fiddle.
20. The Newfoundland Showband: Christmas In My Home Town

Sebastian Agnello: guitar

In 1971 the band recorded 5 albums in 3 days during a marathon session of recordings in Toronto. An interesting fact here is that Sebastian Agnello (The Right Wing Folksinger) who used to be in Toronto teenaged rock band ‘The Lords of London’ was hired for this recording session.

Over the course of their time, The Mynah Birds featured some pretty amazing musicians in their line-up: Neil Young, Rick James, Goldy McJohn and Nick Kassbaum (aka Nick St. Nicholas) of Steppenwolf and Bruce Palmer (who formed Buffalo Springfield with Young). Originally called The Sailors, they changed their name after playing in The Mynah Bird club in Yorkville. They recorded one album for Motown which was never released after it was revealed that Rick James was AWOL from his military duty in the US.

From Thunder Bay but based in Toronto, they lasted only a couple of years. They went from sappy country to psychedelic rock quite easily. They were billed as “The Contagious Sound Of The “PLAGUE”.” They wound their way to California and recorded this in LA. It was released on Crusader Records in the US and W&G down in Australia where it sold really well.

(Ron Sexsmith)
Live on Mariposa Radio Folkwaves
St Catherines ON
Ron Sexsmith: vocal, guitar
Produced by Steve Fruitman, Sept 5, 1988
Recorded live to air on CIUT
On Sept 5, 1988, 3 months into doing weekly radio shows at CIUT, I had the great pleasure of welcoming young Ron Sexsmith on my program, Mariposa Radio Folkwaves (which later became known as The Great North Wind). Two great songs were performed live to air by Ron when he was just starting out, age 24. He was already singing great original songs. It was CKLN folk radio host Joel Wortzman who urged me to check Ron out. He just moved to Toronto from his home town St. Catherines, and was playing at the original Sneaky Dees when it was in a basement on Bloor St, across from Honest Ed’s.

The pre-Steppenwolf band when they lived in Toronto and thought that they were having a hard time with the law. And perhaps they were! After breaking with singer Jack London in 1965, The Sparrow(s) recorded 4 singles and an album before packing up and heading for Los Angeles to become one of the most successful groups of the late 1960s as Steppenwolf.

You Are The Music - We’re Just The Band: Threshold Records THS. 8

David Holland: drums
Mel Galley: guitars
Glenn Hughes: bass, piano, vocals
BJ Cole: steel
Produced by Neil Slaven, 1972
Recorded by Dave Grinstead & John Burns at Decca Studios and Island Studios, London
Trapeze got together in 1969 and a year later were signed to the Moody Blues record label Threshold Records. The band reportedly declined an offer to join The Beatles’ Apple Records, as they believed that they would have more creative freedom with Threshold. After their original release, two members quit the band and were never replace; they became a three piece band instead. We’re Just The Band, released in 1972, went to number 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The band suffered the loss of various players over the years to other great bands, like Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Whitesnake. They called it quits in 1982 and since then have staged re-union tours.

They were recorded by The Who to protest the arrests of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on trumped up drug charges. Townsend played guitar and bass since Entwistle was away on his honeymoon.
