Side One

1.   David McCallum: It Won’t Be Wrong
(Roger McGuinn / Harvey Gerst)
Music: A Bit More Of Me: Capitol Records – ST 2498
Glasgow SL
David McCallum: conductor, arranger
HB Barnukm: arranger

Produced by David Axelrod, 1968
Recorded by Joe Polito

David Keith McCallum
b. 19 September 1933 Glasgow Scotland / d. 25 September 2023 (90) NYC

As a classically trained musician, he conceived a blend of oboe, English horn, and strings with guitar and drums, and presented instrumental interpretations of hits of the day. Played Illya Kuryakin on The Man From UNCLE 1964-68. Such was the popular hysteria surrounding him that he was referred to in newspaper reports at the time as ‘the blond Beatle’ or the ‘fifth Beatle’. While playing Kuryakin, McCallum received more fan mail than any other actor in the history of MGM

Hugh Marsh
b. June 5, 1955 Montreal, Quebec

Marsh has played with Bruce Cockburn, Rush, FM, kd lang, Loreena McKennitt, Chalk Circle and many others. It isn't surprising then that he would have Cockburn do a recitation on this piece, backed by musicians from Cockburn's '80s band: Fergus Marsh on Chapman Stick (Bass), Rob Pilch on guitar and Jon Goldsmith on keys. Apart from that are some of the Shuffle Demon horns: Perry White and Mike Murley.

3.   Hugh Marsh: Purple Haze

Has been in Bruce Cockburn’s band, backed Loreena McKennitt, Don Ross and countless others. Marsh is a four-time winner of the Jazz Report Award for violinist of the year and a three-time recipient of the National Jazz Award for violinist of the year. Since September 2015, Marsh has performed regularly with the Rheostatics.

London UK
Roger Waters: bass
Dave Gilmore: guitars
Rick Wright: keys
Nick Mason: drums
Produced by Pink Floyd, 1972
Recorded at Strawberry Studios Stockport UK; Chateau d'Herouville, Herouville, France

Obscured by Clouds is one of Pink Floyd’s least known albums. Coming on the heals of Meddle, the album that really began to define the new Pink Floyd sound after Syd Barrett, it was recorded in just two weeks in France to support a film of the same name. The band would then go on to record Dark Side of the Moon which, as you all know, is Floyd’s Sgt. Pepper.

Mastered by Mike Reese at The Mastering Lab, LA

McGarrigle fans: have you ever figured out what Pronto Monto (the name of the album) actually means? It’s supposed to mean “prends ton manteau” or “take your coat”. This album was overproduced for AM radio airplay and failed to click with their audience, thus they were dropped by Warner Brothers. This album first appeared on CD in 2016, which says a lot about how the McGarrigles felt about it.

Lee Shapiro: synclavier
Andy Schwartz: electric guitar

Recorded by Howard Linderman at Producers Recording Studio
Mixed by Howard Linderman at RPM Studio

The Roche sisters have the most amazing, off-key harmony vocals that have amazed countless fans, including the likes of Robert Fripp who produced one of their albums. Their song Married Men was a hit for Phoebe Snow in 1979. Suzzy’s daughter is the half-sister to Martha and Rufus Wainwright (with Kate McGarrigle). So the Roche and McGarrigle families seem to be inter-related.

Don McDougall: lead vocals, guitar
Produced by Robin Spurgin, 1969
Recorded at Vancouver Recording Company studios

This Vancouver band started out in the later part of the 1960s as a joke, with only one guy who could actually play. Over the next year they put together a real band and released One Ring Jane as a single in the US but it wasn’t promoted. That was when they formed their own Duck Records and recorded their first album featuring a re-recorded version of One Ring Jane. Bonded with the San Francisco music scene, the album did rather well considering it didn’t get much airplay. They went on to tour with the Yardbirds, Alice Cooper, opened for Cream and Deep Purple before calling it quits in the early 1970s.

b. June 7, 1917 Steubenville, Ohio d. December 25, 1995 (aged 78) Beverly Hills CA

Martin’s father, who was a barber, was originally from Montesilvano, in Abruzzo. Dino did not speak English until he started school at the age of five. Martin then dropped out of Steubenville High School in the 10th grade because he thought he was smarter than his teachers. He bootlegged liquor, served as a speakeasy croupier, was a blackjack dealer, worked in a steel mill, and boxed as a welterweight under the name Kid Crochet. He sang with local bands, calling himself "Dino Martini" (after the Metropolitan Opera tenor, Nino Martini). Connie Francis recorded an Italian version of the song on her 1960 album More Italian Favorites.

While trying to find a suitable name, band member Rick Mars remembered an incident that occurred when he was playing with a band called White Horse, when one of the other band members called the group "a motley looking crew". He had remembered the phrase and later copied it down as 'Mottley Cru'. After modifying the spelling slightly, "Mötley Crüe" was eventually selected as the band's name, with the stylistic decision suggested by vocalist Vince Neil to add the two sets of metal umlauts, supposedly inspired by the German beer Löwenbräu, which the members were drinking at the time.
