This week's program is dedicated to the memory of the late DJ John Donabie.
1. Koussevitsky & Boston Pops Orch: Sibellus Symphony No. 7
(Jean Sibellus)
Mojo Magazine CD 2022
Finland
Produced 1983Canadian Broadcast Industry Hall of Famer John Donabie has passed away, following a long battle with cancer. He was 78.
Hailing from Oshawa, Donabie’s career started at CKLB in 1965 when he tapped one of their DJs to rent a PA system for a local R&B group he was managing. That led to his first job in radio in his hometown, before he left for the all-night shift at CKFH Toronto in the fall of 1967, and quickly went on to the late-night slot at CHUM-FM. Known for his deep love of and encyclopedic knowledge of music, as well as his original programming ideas, Donabie enjoyed a 50+-year career that included being part of the launch team at Q107 (CILQ-FM) in 1977, a 15-year run at CFRB, and stops at CKFH, CKFM-FM, JAZZ.FM.91 (CJRT-FM), and Indie88 (CIND-FM) in Toronto; CKLG-FM Vancouver; CJFM Montreal; CFGM-FM Caledon; CKYC-FM Owen Sound; and CISS-FM Ottawa. He retired from radio after six years hosting on University of Toronto campus station CIUT-FM in 2018.

The band’s first album came out three years later, in 1984. The Toronto Police Service attempted to block radio airplay of their hit, "Cherry Beach Express", due to its theme of opposition to police brutality. In 1947, Elizabeth Clarke was a Winnipeg-born nurse working in Vancouver who wrote this hit song in 6 hours. She would sing this song at family gatherings and was eventually convinced, by her friends, that she should have it recorded. She sang the song, herself, on CKNW radio. In 1948 it was recorded separately by Don Murphy and as well as The Rhythm Kings. As it’s popularity spread, it was recorded by Wilf Carter in 1949 as well as Tex Williams, Doris Day, Bing Crosby and dozens of others. Clarke turned over her royalties to children’s’ hospitals across Canada (where they continue to be donated to this day!). Bluebird was the first song by a Canadian to sell more than a million copies.

"When I'm Cleaning Windows" first appeared in the 1936 film Keep Your Seats, Please.
Following the success of the song, George Formby recorded another version of the song entitled "The Window Cleaner (No. 2)". This song uses similar orchestration to the original version, and it is about further things which were seen on a window cleaning round.
The song’s lyrics were racy for the time and was consequently banned by the BBC radio. The corporation's director general John Reith stated that "if the public wants to listen to Formby singing his disgusting little ditty, they'll have to be content to hear it in the cinemas, not over the nation's airwaves". Formby and his wife and manager Beryl Ingham were dismayed with the block on the song.
In May 1941, Ingham informed the BBC that the song was a favourite of the royal family, particularly Queen Mary, while a statement by Formby pointed out that "I sang it before the King and Queen at the Royal Variety Performance". The BBC relented and started to broadcast the song.
The record's sales were so successful that Regal Zonophone awarded Formby the first silver disc for sales of over 100,000 copies.
