Wednesday was formed in Oshawa in 1971 by high school mates Mike O’Neil and Paul Andrew Smith. They originally played the Ontario circuit playing mostly covers of contemporary hits and 1950s standards. By the time they’d honed their live chops in 1973 they had their first hit with a Wayne Cochran song ‘Last Kiss’. This time Driscoll hand delivered the single to radio stations where CFTR played it immediately and 1050 CHUM had it reach No. 2 on the CHUM Chart.

The buzz spilled over into the US market and the record made Billboard’s Hot 100. It would go on to sell over 200.000 copies. The band were awarded an RPM Maple Leaf Award for outstanding sales and were nominated for several Junos.

Bad Management decisions can ruin a career – we all know that! So after recording two successful albums and a few hit songs, plus a cartoon appearance on the Flintstones (as the Beau Brummelstones), the band was signed to Warners who wanted them to record a safe album with no original songs. It bombed. No one wanted to hear them play other people’s songs which sent the band on a trajectory they would never recover from.
