Fred Gardner
b. 23 December 1910 London / d. 26 July 1950 (39)

Known as the worlds sweetest saxophonist, he began playing as far back as 1925 & by 1933 was talk of London town. He began his career playing in Ray Noble’s band. He was at home on any kind of sax and clarinet and developed into a first class session player.

He formed the semi-professional New Colorado Band in 1928, and a year later entered the band in a contest at Chelsea Town Hall, and they won. Gardner's 78 rpm recording of "I Only Have Eyes for You" was recorded on 29 April 1948 two years before his death.

Note: this was the first album put together by Paul White for Capitol Records of Canada’s new 6000 series of special releases. White tracked down records that weren’t being released in Canada for all kinds of reasons, mostly distribution, and these were all part of the 6000 series. Even the Beatles had special album releases on this series as well as the 72000 series for singles.

This is from my very scratchy 45. I loved (and still do love) controlled feedback. So many great examples but one of my favourites was in Pooniel. The ending of Two Heads is pretty way out there.

Vancouver BC
Pat Caldwell: vocal, harmonica
Charlie Faulkner: bass
Roger Law: guitar
Hugh Lockhead: drums
Don McDougall: guitar
Produced by Robin Spurgin, 1969

This Vancouver band started out in the later part of the 1960s as a joke, with only one guy who could actually play. Over the next year they put together a real band and released One Ring Jane as a single in the US but it wasn’t promoted. That was when they formed their own Duck Records and recorded their first album featuring a re-recorded version of One Ring Jane. Bonded with the San Francisco music scene, the album did rather well considering it didn’t get much airplay. They went on to tour with the Yardbirds, Alice Cooper, opened for Cream and Deep Purple before calling it quits in the early 1970s.

One of the few songs from the Lovin’ Spoonful with Zal Yanovsky on lead vocals. It ends with a gorgling solo. They were such a greatly unpredictable band with roots in many places.

Dave Edmunds b. April 15, 1944 Cardiff, Wales

As a ten-year-old, he first played in 1954 with a band called the Edmunds Bros, a piano duo with his older brother Geoff. Then the brothers were in the Stompers, later called the Heartbeats, formed around 1957.

Then Dave and Geoff were in The 99ers. After that Dave Edmunds was in Crick Feathers' Hill-Bills formed in about 1960. The first group that Edmunds fronted was The Raiders formed in 1961. In 1966, after a short spell in a Parlophone recording band, the Image (1965–1966), Edmunds shifted to a more blues-rock sound with the short-lived band, Human Beans. After just eighteen months, the core of Human Beans formed a new band called Love Sculpture who released their debut single "River to Another Day" in 1968.

Their second single was a quasi-novelty reworking Aram Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance" as a speed- rock number. "Sabre Dance" became a hit after garnering the enthusiastic attention of British DJ John Peel,. After Love Sculpture split, Edmunds had a UK Christmas Number 1 single in 1970 with "I Hear You Knocking".  Although he continued to release solo albums, he was smart enough to get into production

Chuck Chandler: keys
Vito Fiory: drums
Produced by Rob Stevens for Cash West Productions, 1977
Recorded & Mixed by Nick Blagona at Le Studio, Morin Heights, QC
Mastered at Masterdisk by Bob Ludwig, NYC

Hard to find relevant info on these guys! What I do know is they were active from 1977 to 1978 in Montreal and I’ve got both of their albums. They were a bit commercial and obviously had a lot of money thrown their way since the albums were also released across the USA. They are described as a folk band but this particular track has that McCartney-esque syncopated beat heavily used by The Beatles.

Note: not the same Lavender Hill Mob from Fresno California who broke up in 1967.

Henry Blake Fordham aka Kelly Jay
b. 1 Dec 1941 Toronto / d. Calgary AB June 21, 2019 (77)

Crowbar came together in 1970 after the band had been fired as Ronnie Hawkins’ backup band. Fordham was the band’s lead singing keyboard player and was the heart of the band. He co-wrote “Oh What a Feeling” which was inducted into the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Margaret Trudeau (the Prime Minister’s mother), was a Crowbar fan and the band performed at many of Trudeau’s election campaign rallies in 1972. In my humble opinion, Kelly Jay was the first real ‘Captain Canada’; he also became good friends with John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen.
