George Higton
b. April 5, 1951 / d. July 15, 2021, Toronto (70)
I didn’t know George Higton but I really like the album he put out in 2019, on vinyl no less! His wife posted this on Facebook just after his passing:
George started off as a solo singer/songwriter mostly in the folk vane. He travelled around as a young man, with his guitar. After living for a period in NYC, writing for New York Rocker magazine, he returned to Toronto and started Shades Magazine. It was during this time that he and Barrie Farrell met and created the band Existers.
George found music to be an evolution, as his interests/focus changed so did his songwriting. Over the years after his Existers time, he worked as a solo performer and collaborated with many talented musical artists producing some amazing work – Ardin (Doug) Innis, Chip Yarwood, Ihor Holubizky, Nick "The Brownman" Ali, Rod Booth, Louis Simao, Rachel Melas, Cleave Anderson, Ernie Tollar, to name a few. He left some great songs to remember. Music, songwriting, writing and film were his passion. He worked on his craft right up to the end. His final music project will be finished, and released.
Thank you to those who remember George Higton, and who have felt his presence made a difference in their lives. He would have felt honoured.

2. Mandala: World of Love
(Domenic Troiano)
Classics: WEA - 25 23291
Toronto, ON
Domenic Troiano guitar
George Olliver vocals
Penti 'Whitey' Glan drums
Don Elliot bass
Joey Chirowski keys
The Atlantic Horns
Produced by Arif Mardin & Jerry Greenberg, 1967
When Mandala took the stage, George Olliver took over, doing the splits and using his powerful vocals to great effect. I mean, if you were in a club full of thoughtless talking people and George did something like this to the room, well you can imagine that all mouths would stop wagging and all eyes were pointed in the direction of the sound ringing them in, like a triangle call to breakfast in a freezing lumbcamp. They comply. They all complied in the end. We all do in the end. He did after suffering a stroke.
3. Mandala: Give And Take
(Victor Chambers)
Classics: WEA - 25 23291
Toronto, ON
Domenic Troiano: guitar
George Olliver: vocals
Penti 'Whitey' Glan: drums
Don Elliot: bass
Joey Chirowski: keys
Produced by Kopppleman and Rubin, 1967
Compilation produced 1985
Recorded at RCA Studios, Toronto by George Simkew
In 1967, two versions of this song were being aired at the same time: Mandala’s and the other by Jimmy Cliff. This was the second single released by Mandala and it struggled to climb the charts.
4. Mandala: Opportunity
(Dominec Troiano)
Classics: WEA: 25 23291
Toronto, ON
Domenic Troiano guitar
George Olliver vocals
Pentii 'Whitey' Glan drums
Don Elliot bass
Joey Chirowski keys
Produced by Domenic Troiano, 1966
Recorded at Chess Studios, Chicago
Opportunity was the first song Mandala recorded when they got the chance to do so in the legendary Chess Studios in Chicago. The intended A Side was a song by Olliver called Lost Love but it was the B Side that became the ‘Hit’. Eventually Dom Troiano wanted to take the band more into the pop-rock world which wasn’t what George Olliver had in mind. Being a James Brown freak, he left the band towards the end of 1967 and was replaced by Roy Kenner who had their second big hit ‘Lovitis’.
5. Mike Malahini Scott & His Hawaiianaires Rhythm of the Islands
(Leon Belasco)
Live At The Waikiki: Maple Records MA 1014
Toronto
Jamie Nolan, guitar
Al Gardner, drums, uk
Paul Butler, keys
Mike Scott, Hawaiian steel
Produced by Mike Scott & Jamie Nolan, 1983
Recorded at Fiesta Studios, Toronto
Mike Scott took to the electric Hawaiian guitar in the late 1940s. He was born in Wiltshire, England and learned to play properly before emigrating to Toronto in 1954. Within days of his arrival he joined the musicians’ union and was out working with local bands. He was given the nickname Malihini ...a Hawaiian word meaning 'a newcomer' to Hawaii. His Hawaiianaires were frequent musical guests at the infamous Bali Hai room in the Ports of Call restaurant where CHUM DJ’s used to hang out.
This album claims that it was recorded before a live audience, but the shoddy production shows how the audience was dubbed in before and after every song.

A couple of weeks back I played a song from this bands first released album in 2015. They got together a year earlier and having survived a few personnel changes, they released their sophomore album in 2020. Not as raw as the first one, but better songs and a tighter sound without forfeiting the spirit of the group. I like’em.

Tulpa officially became a performing unit in 1984 as Private Lives but found out that an American band were also using that name decided to become Tulpa. They played in Toronto venues like Larry's Hideaway, The Rivoli, Cabana Room, The Beverly Tavern and Lee's Palace. After recording Mosaic Fish, they opened for acts like The Payolas and The Tragically Hip, garnering rare opening act encores. They released a live record, "Off the Board - Live at CBGBs" in New York before splintering around 1990. John Bottomley died unexpectedly April 6, 2011.

He plays percussive guitar, sings with a voice to die for and is aware. That awareness is reflected in the depth of his songs, all of them very special. I’ve followed Jon’s career since he first debuted in the 1990s. CIUT’s Atlantic Ceilidh host at that time, Patrick Simmonds, said “You gotta check this guy out!” And so I did. This is from a vinyl album release.
