Formed in 1977, The Action was one of the first garage-punk bands in Canada, and the first band to include all three of Ottawa’s Fenton brothers, with John and Paul on guitar and their younger brother, Michael, who was still in his teens, on bass. Claimed Paul Fenton: We were definitely the first punk band in Ottawa. The EP they released became a cult hit in New York, and sold thousands of copies in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. By the early 1980s the Action were morphing into the Fenton Brothers Band (1984) who put out two albums in the mid ‘80s and broke up in 1990. Paul Fenton put out a solo album in 2000.

Brian Wilson’s lyrics were set to the music of "Sweet Little Sixteen", written by Chuck Berry. It was recorded by Beach Boys and released as a single on March 4, 1963 – their first big hit song and one of the first surf music songs with vocals. Berry’s publisher, Arc Music, threatened to sue since only Brian Wilson was originally credited with having written the song. His father, the band’s manager Murry Wilson, acquiesced and signed the song over to Arc. Later, Carl Wilson said the Beach Boys "ran into Chuck Berry in Copenhagen and he told us he loves 'Surfin' U.S.A.”

Marks took over playing for Al Jardine who left the band to study dentistry. After recording on four successful albums, Marks had an argument with the band’s crazed manager, Murray Wilson, which resulted in his leaving in 1963. He was replaced by non-other than Al Jardine.

The first surf song to hit number one! Brian Wilson of the Beachboys gave the unfinished song to Jan Berry who finished it, recorded it and watched as it surfed to number 1 which made Brian’s dad, Murry Wilson, fume and call Jan and Dean pirates.

Produced by Johnny Kitchen, 1963
Recorded by Johnny Kitchen in Los Angeles
This was a band called the Cornells (originally the Tornados) who used the name Surf Riders for this recording. They got to open for the Beach Boys at the Pavilion Skating Rink in Huntington Beach, California on Feb 8, 1964 if it was the same Surf Riders. There was also a Surf Riders band from Minnesota, and ex-Byrd Gene Clark was in a Surf Riders band in Kansas before he joined the New Christy Minstrels and made his way to LA.
Johnny Kitchen was a bit of an enigma in the music scene; no one knew who he actually was until recently. His real name was Jack Maurice Millman (b. Canada, Nov 1930). He helped produced and record the Wild Man Fisher album that Frank Zappa put out on his Bizarre Records label.

There were two sides to the Trashmen: there was the surf side and the looney side. These two songs encapsulate what I mean. The punky woodpecker vocals of Steve Wahrer, their drummer vs. the smooth surfing sounds of Tony Andreason. The hits were on the looney side (Bird Dance Beat / Bird Bath) to go along with Surfin' Bird.

The Hondells were a band manufactured by Producer Gary Usher, originally consisting of session musicians. His aim was to capture some of the market opened up by The Beach Boys: Surf Music. It’s rather difficult to discern who exactly was recruited by Usher to record Sidewalk Surfer Girl. He most likely used Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine and Richard A. Podolor along with other Wrecking Crew members.

Mel Shaw was the guy who managed and produced award winning records by The Stampeders but it all started here, with this 1963 recording of a band that 'later-to-be-Stampeder' Ronnie King aka Cornelius Van Sprang, was on. It was a surf band from landlocked Calgary, Alberta!

This Vancouver band started out in the later part of the 1960s as a joke, with only one guy who could actually play. Over the next year they put together a real band and released One Ring Jane as a single in the US but it wasn’t promoted. That was when they formed their own Duck Records and recorded their first album featuring a re-recorded version of One Ring Jane. Bonded with the San Francisco music scene, the album did rather well considering it didn’t get much airplay. They went on to tour with the Yardbirds, Alice Cooper, opened for Cream and Deep Purple before calling it quits in the early 1970s.
