RIP Rick Derringer
b. August 5, 1947 Celina, Ohio / d. May 26, 2025 (77) Ormond Beach, Florida
Who would have thought to put a 17 year old garage rock kid from Ohio with an albino blues legend from Beaumont Texas? It led to a partnership with Johnny Winter which included production credits to Rick Derringer to work with artists such as Alice Cooper and Barbara Streisand.
1. The McCoys: Hang On Sloopy
(Bert Russell / Wes Farrell)
45 single: Eric Records 273
Fort Recovery, Ohio
Rick Derringer (born Rick Zehringer) – Lead guitar and vocals
He was only 17 when "Hang On Sloopy" became a hit.
Later had a solo career and played with Edgar Winter and Steely Dan.
Randy Jo Hobbs – Bass guitar

A young rock group named Rick and the Raiders opened for The Strangeloves, and provided backing, for them in July in Dayton, Ohio. The Strangeloves, three writer-producers from Brooklyn, New York City, recruited Rick and the Raiders to record Hang on Sloopy under their name. The Raiders' 17-year-old lead singer, Rick Zehringer, was flown to Bell Sound Studios in New York to record his lead vocal over the Strangeloves' already-recorded backing tracks. It was then decided to change the name of Rick and the Raiders to the McCoys to avoid any confusion with Paul Revere & the Raiders. Zehringer also began using the stage name Rick Derringer. The single was issued on Bang Records and entered the U.S. and Canadian charts on August 14, 1965, reaching the top position in early October.
Little Caesar and the Consuls released a version of the song in 1965 that reached No. 50 on the Billboard pop chart and No. 3 in Canada.

Beaumont TX
Johnny winter: lead guitar, vocals
John Turner: drums
Tommy Shannon: bass
Produced by Johnny Winter with Eddie Kramer & Marvin Devonish, 1969After releasing two and a half albums for Columbia (plus the Imperial album), Winter's record company decided that the heavy blues rock sound wasn't selling enough records. His brother, Edgar Winter, told him about the McCoys, thinking they would be the perfect replacements for the band, adding a rock and pop component. Three of them joined Winter's band as Johnny Winter And... The move worked, the record company was much happier and for five years it held together before Johnny migrated back to the deep blues of his youth. John 'Red' Turner wanted to live a life closer to hom and bass player Tommy Shannon would soon team up with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Cherry Beach Express is a song about the notorious 52 Division of the Toronto Police force. They have long been believed to routinely take prisoners and suspects to a deserted, industrial waste land called Cherry Beach and beat the crap out of them. There was at least one major law suit where a Cherry Beach Express victim was awarded a six figure settlement against the Toronto goons who took him on the Cherry Beach Express.
