They became Eyes of Dawn in 1966 and their first break came when they won the 'Big 9' battle of the bands in Hull, Quebec. From there they perfected their playing and performing four nights per week as the house band for at the Le Petite Souris coffee house. Their standing room only/sold out shows brought them to the attention of manager John Poser who took them on as clients. He soon arranged a recording session in Montreal with Don Norman and Ron Greene as producers. Their first single "Time To Be Going" was released in January 1967. As an up and coming folk trio (formed in 1967), the pre-Good Brothers band recorded just one album. Based in Richvale Ontario, they made their way to California to record and James decided to stay there. Having used Gordon Lightfoot’s guitar player, Red Shea, on some of the cuts on this album, it somehow lead to an appearance on some of Lightfoot’s songs (like Alberta Bound) on the Don Quixote album. Lightfoot enjoyed The Good Brothers a lot until one of them had an affair with Gordie’s girlfriend. Their first show was at Maple Leaf Gardens with Grand Funk Railroad. Then came the cross Canada tour on the Festival Express.

b. 23 December 1910 London / d. 26 July 1950 (39)

Known as the worlds sweetest saxophonist, he began playing as far back as 1925 & by 1933 was talk of London town. He began his career playing in Ray Noble’s band. He was at home on any kind of sax and clarinet and developed into a first class session player.

He formed the semi-professional New Colorado Band in 1928, and a year later entered the band in a contest at Chelsea Town Hall, and they won. Gardner's 78 rpm recording of "I Only Have Eyes for You" was recorded on 29 April 1948 two years before his death.

Note: this was the first album put together by Paul White for Capitol Records of Canada’s new 6000 series of special releases. White tracked down records that weren’t being released in Canada for all kinds of reasons, mostly distribution, and these were all part of the 6000 series. Even the Beatles had special album releases on this series as well as the 72000 series for singles.

I remember first hearing this album and, like the Sgt Pepper experience of 1967, this one hit places we never knew existed. It was amazing. Everyone bought this album. Some even went out and purchased quadraphonic sound systems because of it. It was the culmination of the band’s rise to power. Never one of my favourite albums though, I haven’t listened to it in its entirety for decades – until now! I totally forgot how great this album really is.
