In Toronto in the 1970s, if you had the money, you couldn’t lose by hiring the best Bar Mitzvah band in the GTA. Really great players and the album’s well produced – except for the cover maybe! It features the entire band standing around a picnic table on Centre Island in their mustard beige tuxedos in front of the brand new CN Tower with the flag of Isreal flying proudly. It’s called Kosher Style. Fun album.

Mickey began his recording career as part of the Ukrainian musical comedy team, Mickey & Bunny. Mickey was a pharmacist and his wife, Bunny, was a substitute school teacher. They released over a dozen albums on the V Records label.

On this particular album, Mickey’s first solo shot, Producer and label owner Alec Groshak on the back cover claims:

“This album was begged, compiled, decorated, revived, doctored, updated, collected, assembled, amassed, scraped together, dredged up, loused up, and buggered up by Mickey at the insistence of thousands of fans and myself. You have in your hands one of the finest English-Ukrainian albums available today. Play it at your next party and see action begin. Sing-a-long with it and make up your own verses. (Sorry…but Mickey didn’t dare put in some of the  better verses that he knows)”.

V Records issued, what is possibly the most sought after Canadian collectible 45, The Squires doing ‘The Sultan’ bw ‘Aurora’, issued in 1963. This was Neil Young's first 45 released with The Squires when he was 17. Only a few hundred of them were ever pressed and only a dozen or so are said to have survived. Mexico had an anti-hippie anit-longhair policy (especially at the border). They banned Hair after only 1 performance and deported many progressive musicians. To get around holding the Festival, they billed it as a racing car event (sorta like Strawberry Fields the year before). Est 500,000 attended. 3 Souls were the last to play.

Alex Lora became the first Mexican rock band to have a Gold certified record with their album "Simplemente" The 2008 Lonely Planet guide to Mexico calls El Tri "the grandfathers of Mexican rock." 2006's Rock en Espana characterizes them as "Mexico's quintessential working-class rock outfit." Dublin’s Abby Tavern dates back to the 15th Century close to the ancient ruins of Howth Abbey, which dates back to the 11th century. Their big hit song was "We're Off To Dublin in the Green" used by Carling Breweries (Canada) Ltd in an international television advertising campaign. The song is an IRA marching song dating back to approximately 1916. Using the soundtrack from the commercial, the song was released on Canada's ARC Records and became extremely popular, reaching No. 2 on Toronto’s CHUM Charts and selling close to 150,000 copies in Canada alone within the first year of release.

It was a surprise hit, partly because of the poor sound quality, partly because of the song's ties to the IRA, and partly because of its association with an alcoholic beverage. Carling Black Label reported increased market share following the release of the commercial and the song's subsequent popularity. It was also recorded and released as a successful single in Canada by The Carlton Showband that same year, renaming it The Merry Ploughboy, also on ARC records.

Jean-Pierre Chichportich (drums)

Produced 1965

The group got together in 1960, one of the first French bands to play rock n’ roll (along with Les Chats Sauvages). They recorded Be Bop A Lula in that same year and followed it up with several successful singles before the 1962 with the departure of Mitchell for his military service. The group stopped recording in late 1964.

Mike Scott took to the electric Hawaiian guitar in the late 1940s. He was born in Wiltshire, England and learned to play properly before emigrating to Toronto in 1954. Within days of his arrival he joined the musicians’ union and was out working with local bands. He was given the nickname Malihini ...a Hawaiian word meaning 'a newcomer' to Hawaii. His Hawaiianaires were frequent musical guests at the infamous Bali Hai room in the Ports of Call restaurant where CHUM DJ’s used to hang out.

This album claims that it was recorded before a live audience, but the shoddy production shows how the audience was dubbed in before and after every song.
