A Texas based rock band that formed in 1966 who’s first gig was opening for The Who in San Antonio in 1967. They were known for the novelty of having two lead guitarists in the band. After scoring a smashing success with Hot Smoke and Sassafras, they left their record company, changed their name to Damian (after the Herman Hesse novel) and signed a management deal with Steppenwolf’s (another HH novel) Nick St. Nicholas. They called it a day in 1972, having achieved only this one hit song.

Heat Alert

"Toddler dies after accidentally being left inside car as mother taught at Bancroft school"

(True headline from last year)

Don Freed’s song, “A Really Hot Day” is a song that I have to play every year unfortunately. It’s my annual call for potential ‘morons’ NOT to leave their babies and pets in parked furnaces. (I still can’t believe that people do that!) Don Freed recorded this album nearly 40 years ago but still the message doesn’t seem to penetrated deeply enough. So here we go again.

Don Freed
b. New Westminster BC 1949

Born in BC but raised in Saskatchewan, Freed began his music career in 1966. By 1969 he was seen performing with Johnny Cash which lead to Freed signing to Capitol Records (although they turned down releasing anything). He hitchhiked to Toronto, cashless, and phoned one of the only people he knew – Juri Krytiuk. He was then invited to be a session musician on Stevedore Steve’s first album, Songs of the Stevedore. Eventually he began writing and singing his own songs. Beginning in the early 1990s, Freed began to shift his musical focus from that of being a solo performer to being a promoter of Métis and First Nations culture, particularly involving children. He was also shacked up with Joni Mitchell at the time and collaborated with her on her album ‘Taming the Tiger’. He’s still out there giving songwriting workshops to Métis and First Nations kids.

b. April 16, 1960

His age was 15 yrs when he went in to CIUT’s studios to record a demo of this song for CBC radio.

This was the first real studio recording Colin made for a CBC radio appearance on Touch The Earth, a folk-oriented program hosted by Sylvia Tyson. He once told me that to practice for this he came down to CIUT’s original studios, at 91 St. George St., to test himself out. I guess he passed the audition!

Of course now he’s a top guitarist, producer, performer with Blackie And The Rodeo Kings.

Peter J Moore
b. August 6, 1956 Hamilton, ON / d. November 11, 2023 (67) Toronto

He began his amazing career as a radio dj.  In 1976, Peter, and a few other students, started the campus radio broadcast station CHRW-FM at the University of Western Ontario in London, . He was the on-air DJ for the new music program covering the punk rock and new wave scene. At that time most punk bands were English, which created a problem fulfilling the station's "35% Canadian content" obligation. Since there were very few Canadian punk releases, Moore started recording the live shows of local and touring Canadian punk rock bands and playing them on his radio show,

After graduating from Western in 1982, he founded MDI Productions and moved his operation to Toronto. In 1988, Moore produced the now famous one-microphone recording of The Trinity Session by the Cowboy Junkies. It was recorded at Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987, using one ambisonic stereo mic connected to a Beta VCR. It became an international success story selling more than 1.5 million copies in the first year.

Moore really made his name in Production but specialized in remastering analogue to digital. He worked at digitalizing a long lost Joni Mitchell tape recorded for Greenpeace and was asked to remaster to digital the entire Basement tapes collection featuring Bob Dylan and The Band. I’ve chosen tracks from various artists who had the opportunity of working with Peter J Moore.

One of Grammy Award winning Professor Rob Bowman’s pet projects as Executive Producer

This album, recorded live at the El Mocambo, is from Mainline’s short lived reunion which began on my Great North Wind program after they performed live.
