Emsdale ON
Mendelson Joe: guitar, vocal, foot stomp
Colin Linden: searing electric guitar

Okay, we've somehow reduced our selves to sharing the sound of  cockroaches - three different songs just called Cockroach by Canadian acts. There are others! There's also Shuffle Demons and Horn who did songs about these lovely creatures.

Joe's is from a cassette that was basically only sold at Ring Music in Toronto and signed in gold ink by M Joe. He claimed, "I put Not Safe out on cassette because no record company would touch it because its not too safe." He calls Cockroach, "My reality."

(BTW: In mid-1977, April Wine was booked to play a charity concert at the El Mocambo Club in Toronto. Co-headliner on the bill was a band called "The Cockroaches," who turned out to be The Rolling Stones.)

The group took its name from a Bible passage: "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine ...." meaning: do not give things of value to those who will not understand or appreciate them. PBS was under the influence of The Fugs who directed them to ESP Records in the mid-1960s. On working with the label ESP-Disk, Rapp has said that "We never got any money from ESP. Never, not even like a hundred dollars or something. My real sense is that he (Bernard Stollman) was abducted by aliens, and when he was probed it erased his memory of where all the money was". They then went to Reprise Records and released several albums with them before Tom Rapp went solo in 1972.

It was the first in a string of his the BeeGees would make in North America. After this release they began to sound more like an orchestrated hit machine.
