A couple of weeks back I played a song from this bands first released album in 2015. They got together a year earlier and having survived a few personnel changes, they released their sophomore album in 2020. Not as raw as the first one, but better songs and a tighter sound without forfeiting the spirit of the group. I like’em.

Noel Walker: whistling
Studio Musicians
Mike Sammes Singers
Produced by Noel Walker, 1967
The Creation of Noel Walker, there was no actual performer called ‘Whistling Jack Smith’. The name was a take-off on the name of the baritone singer of the 1920s called ‘Whispering’
Jack Smith. “I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman” rose up the UK singles charts. When it was to be featured on the ‘Top of the Pops’ BBC TV program, actor Coby Wells was used to mime the whistling, and later toured as the public face of Whistling Jack Smith. (Wells' real name was Billy Moeller; he was born in 1946 and was a brother of Tommy Moeller, lead vocalist, guitarist, and pianist with Unit 4 + 2).
The cover for the record features Wells wearing a Red British military jacket, spreading his arms and hands around a globe of the world. British enough to sell a lot of records.

A very cool band, committed to vinyl which gives them that great psychedelic feel. Based around the songwriting of Duncan Sheppard, they’ve really advanced as a band. The two cuts that I chose to play this week show a very early band on one of their first recordings, to the present day. Very cool!

Violinist Chris McKhool was putting out some pretty interesting solo albums in the early 2000s when he met up with flamenco jazz guitarist Kevin Laliberté and that’s when everything began to click. Fusing their wild sounds with world works to my liking music, they formed the basis of the Sultans of String. Since then they’ve released several well received albums that have generated a lot of interest. What a treat to finally hear them on vinyl!! It’s a totally different experience. Vocalist Marc Lewis responded to an advert in Melody Maker for a singer and the pair then recruited Liam McGuinness on Bass and John Greville on drums. The band were focused on creating dreamy rock anthems. Consequently, they found that the European market was more aligned to their musical style and they toured abroad extensively.
