Guitarist Eric Stewart was a member of Wayne Fontana’s backup band The Mindbenders who had one major hit: The Game of Love. After Fontana left The Mindbenders in 1965, Stewart became the lead vocalist and sang their big hit song, Groovy Kind Of Love. The Mindbenders is where Stewart met Graham Gouldman. They started Strawberry Studios  near Manchester in 1969 (yes, named for Strawberry Fields) where Kevin Godley & Paul Burgess were used as studio musicians. They formed the foundation for 10CC, releasing one single as Hot Legs first. Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz of Super K Productions came to England and commissioned Gouldman to write and produce formula bubblegum songs, many of which were recorded at Strawberry Studios (hits for 1910 Fruitgum Company and Ohio Express). 10CC formed in 1972 after that brief stint as Hot Legs.

Originally known as Shades of Blonde, this Calgary based rock band was a well known commodity out west. In those days there were only a handful of recording studios in Canada and most of them were solidly booked so it only made sense for many bands to go state-side to get into a studio at affordable prices. 49th Parallel were on par with Toronto's Paupers, Vancouver's Collectors and Montreal's The Haunted. In 2014 Lion Records released a vinyl compilation album of their 8 singes as the 49th and their original release as Shades of Blond in 1967.

Moniker’s used to sell records and Dutch Mason’s was ‘Canada’s Prime Minister of the Blues’. He recorded albums that were poorly recorded, badly mastered but sold well, earning him a following that went way beyond the Maritimes. I remember when he’d play Toronto clubs – it was always a special occasion to see one of Canada’s first blues masters. In my opinion he was like Canada’s answer to John Mayall.

The Roche sisters have the most amazing, off-key harmony vocals that have amazed countless fans, including the likes of Robert Fripp who produced one of their albums. Their song Married Men was a hit for Phoebe Snow in 1979. Suzzy’s daughter is the half-sister to Martha and Rufus Wainwright (with Kate McGarrigle). So the Roche and McGarrigle families seem to be inter-related.

John Brumwell Mayall OBE
b. 29 November 1933, Macclesfield, Cheshire, UK / d. 22 July 2024 (90) California

John Mayall had a major impact on the rock scene over a 7 decade career. He influenced the formation of Fleetwood Mac, Cream and the Rolling Stones, providing serious guitar gods to fill in the void. Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor! And yet he only got inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame the year he died, in 2024. Typical of an American institution.

33. Robert Fripp & League of Gentlemen: Eye Needles

London UK
Barry Andrews, organ
Robert Fripp, guitar
Sara Lee, bass
Johnny Toobad, drums
Produced by Robert Fripp, 1981
Recorded by Tony Arnold at Arny's Shack, Parkstone, Dorset UK

Interestingly, my copy of this album has the wrong label on side one. It reads 'Difficult to Cure' by Rainbow with the serial PD 1-6316 - one number before League of Gentlemen, the label for side two. All the songs on the record though are by the League.

The back cover of the album features all their gigs from the album release tour of 1980. It says they played two gigs at the El Mocambo in Toronto June 17 and 18, 1981.

34. The Who: Whiskey Man
(John Entwistle)
Happy Jack (A Quick One): Decca Records DL74892
London
Roger Daltrey: Vocals
John Entwistle: Bass Guitar, French Horn and Lead Vocals
Keith Moon: Drums

On The Who’s second album, managers Stamp and Lambert persuaded the other three members of the band to contribute songs to augment their incomes. Keith Moon wrote a couple of song, Daltry wrote one and John Entwistle another two. The rest were by Pete Townsend. Both of Entwistle’s songs were fantastic: Boris The Spider and this one, Whiskey Man. Originally a French Horn player, Entwistle often overdubbed it on several early Who cuts.

About session men – a Ray Davies interview with Creem Magazine:

“I remember (Jimmy) Page coming to one of our sessions when we were recording "All Day And All Of The Night". We had to record that song at 10 o'clock in the morning because we had a gig that night. It was done in three hours. Page was doing a session in the other studio, and he came in to hear Dave's solo, and he laughed and he snickered. And now he says that he played it! So I think he's an asshole, and he can put all the curses he wants on me because I know I'm right and he's wrong. Dave is a great guitar player. He's got his limitations, but he's never been given justice for doing that. He made that when he was 16-years-old. He created a sound, and after that came Jimi Hendrix and all the fuzz boxes.

According to producer, Shel Talmy: So far as I know Jimmy's never claimed to have performed the solo on 'You Really Got Me', but his involvement as a rhythm guitarist on that session and others is irrefutable. I seriously doubt The Kink's song 'Session Man' is a direct reference to Jimmy Page, rather it is a reference to session musicians in general

Vegetable man was considered for the band's third single or for inclusion on A Saucerful of Secrets. Recording began in the fall of 1967 to be considered for the B side of Scream Thy Last Scream (also unreleased) and it was never actually finished or mastered. However, the band decided to keep the song unreleased for various reasons and it wasn’t until Nick Mason uploaded a copy online as an mp3. It wasn’t officially released until it appeared on The Early Years 1965–1972 box set. It was performed live for the first time by Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets on his 2018 European Tour.

Hard to find relevant info on these guys! What I do know is they were active from 1977 to 1978 in Montreal and I’ve got both of their albums. They were a bit commercial and obviously had a lot of money thrown their way since the albums were also released across the USA. They are described as a folk band but this particular track has that McCartney-esque syncopated beat heavily used by The Beatles.

Note: not the same Lavender Hill Mob from Fresno California who broke up in 1967.
